London area ticketing

Living in Cumbria, the introduction of 37’s on the coast line has re-awakened my interest, and as I have a couple of trips to London coming up I am planning to improve both track coverage and ‘red lining’ of London Overground units and also FGW HST’s before they are replaced. I have a few queries on ticketing and wondered if anyone could help please.

Thames Branches Day Ranger.
Says that this is valid on FGW between London Paddington and Reading, but does this include using them on the HST’s or only the local units?

London Overground.
I have an Oyster card, that I am planning on using, and am starting to put together some ‘moves’ lists, predominantly LO but there will be a few others too. I wondered if you have to ‘touch’ in and out at each station, as some of them I will only be on the train for one stop, and on the ELL for example am planning on doing each train one stop then waiting for the next. The idea being to do as many units as I can in as short a time as possible, However this means some short stops and platform changes but if you have to go in and out then this would be impractical. Am I better just buying a one day travel card instead>

Any advice would be appreciated

The rover is valid on any FGW service within it's area of validity including HSTs. It is a very common ticket used by those trying to get as many FGW HSTs as possible.

For what you want to do on LO you'll need a one day travelcard as Oyster isn't really suitable for being used as a rover due to maximum journey times and issues with touching out and in at the same station in a short period of time.

Depends if you want to leave the platform area, and how much time altogether you want to spend.

I've used the Thames Branches Day Ranger several times, and it's certainly a good way to get HST haulage between Paddington & Reading.

Just be aware there are certain restrictions:

Mon to Fri: valid from 09:30 or from when the off-peak day return becomes valid if earlier.

Not valid on inter-city services that depart Paddington and Reading between 16.00 and 19.15

However at weekends and Bank Holidays there are no restrictions.

Interestingly, I checked the FGW website and it links to the validity details on the NR special offers page which doesn't mention the evening restriction. Surprising they trust said page which is notoriously inaccurate. ..
