I've been away for a while, and on my return have noticed a load of infrastructure supplies near the location of theproposed station at Elland Station.

It was a bit dark, so I couldn't tell what was happening - can anyone enlighten me?

A business case is being prepared for Elland, Haxby & Crosshills although Elland is top of the list for reopening, unfortunately it could be very expensive to build due to proped site being on an embankment. The traffic congestion going into Halifax from Elland is awful in the peak periods.

Those with long memories will know that Elland was supposed to get a station at the same time as Brighouse, but the money ran out. Indeed the Huddersfield to Bradford Interchange and beyond services have a ridiculously long dwell at Halifax due to allowances made for calls at Elland and Low Moor. At some point in the decade and a half since, an alternative site to the location of the original (near the old signal box) at the other end of the tunnel and bridge under the A629 was proposed. Any idea which site is now being pursued? Due to the heavy traffic mentioned above, either site will need a reasonably large car park.

Either site will be a fair distance from the town centre, but will at least be close to the railway!

Elland is a no-brainer, and I would definitely love Haxby to be reopened as well. I heard that Strensall was being proposed as well, but only one was ever going to go ahead.

If/when this station is open I assume Grand Central will want to call there, along with Low Moor when that is complete. This would make their Bradford services even slower for anyone doing the whole run... Also, the strange situation of a service running non-stop to Doncaster but then calling at all stations it passes through, bar PonteCarlo Tanshelf; Featherstone and Streethouse.

Odd that football fans get such a bad press on here yet people are happy for a station to be built at Elland Road

Well any visiting fans arriving at a reopened Elland station may well find themselves missing the kick off! ;)

The proposed site of the station appears to be in a more convenient location than the original station further west: does anyone with local knowledge know how good access would be for local residents?

;) could you not just play along for a bit ;)

It didn't occur to me your comment was deliberate - sorry for spoiling your fun! (Mind you, I suspect there will be many a visiting football fan that does make that error!)

Has anyone any updated news on this project? Is it still meant to be in a location somewhere out of the town centre, near to Lowfields Business Park, being a park and ride station.

A budget was approved by the WYCA earlier this year to go ahead with a feasibility study (I believe GRIP Stage 4) for Elland and East Leeds Parkway.

The Lowfields business park site is anything but a convenient location, as Paul said it would be a park and ride station, cut off from the town and main residential areas by the dual carriageway A629. Pedestrian and bike access from the town would either be via a grotty industrial estate (Wistons Lane) or along the main link road from the town to A629, around two very busy traffic islands and under a flyover. See the site analysis on the Calderdale planning page Hadyn linked to.

If you dig down in the documentation on the planning site you will find that the detailed business case suffered in 2000 because the station would increase not decrease car journeys.

I understand this time round a site near the old Greetland station was also being considered, but this would also be a park and ride location, although at least on a major bus route.

I certainly hope they sort the location problems out this time round, else I fear the station may be canned again.

True, I forgot Haxby and Crosshills, but of course they aren't in West Yorkshire, although both now come in the remit of the Transport Commitee of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. East Leeds Parkway is actually highly relevant to Elland, because extra capacity is required at Leeds for the services WYMetro want to run on the Calder Valley line.

But you have some other valid points about the Lowfields site - which is on an "island" cut off from surrounding areas by the River Calder and the A629. The original site is on the River Calder floodplain area and hence may face more strict planning requirements than in 2000. I understand that yet another site, a few hundred metres east, actually in the middle of the business park is also being considered in order to overcome this. However this is even further from the town and has less space for parking.

However both of these sites suffer from the only vehicle access to the "island" being off the interchange with the A629, which is already congested enough in rush hours.

!

without knowing the area and unless its hemmed in by buildings and embankments then a large car park shouldn't be too difficult to build - you just have to think up and not out.

Haxby and Strensall are only ever mentioned in the run up to elections. If you go to the York Press website and type in "Haxby Station" in the Search Bar you will see it at roughly 5 year intervals.

The old station was a dreary place, involving a walk of about 1 mile from the centre of Elland, over Elland Bridge and down the Brighouse Rd, and in my experience attracted little custom, being handy only really for the newly-built crematorium.

And, sorry to continue in this same macabre tone, but I can't see a new station near the Lowfields Industrial Estate being any more attractive to local residents, except perhaps as a park and ride, being adjacent to the A629 Huddersfield-Halifax Rd. But then if you get into the car to go to the station for a 10 minute-ride to Halifax or Huddersfield, why not stay in the car throughout?

So the old station was a bit of a dead end then? :D

There appears to be a car park in waiting at Elland, saying that though the railway station could be served by a revised E3 so a shuttle bus between the town centre and the railway station could be an option. Shame it that the E3 only runs for a few hours a day.

This is from the Todmorden Curve thread:

Its amusing that Todmorden councillors have just been given this news because Cornholme was rejected in a study of 60+ possible new station sites in West Yorkshire published in January 2015 and the 30 passengers a day figure mentioned in the story is included in the report. http://www.wymetro.com/New_Stations_Study.aspx.

Haxby, Elland, Crosshills (Site B), East Leeds Parkway and Thorpe Park (the latter two in conjunction) have been recommended for further study. The other stops progressed to Stage B (Golcar, East Ardsley (both sites), Hipperholme, Laisterdyke, Manningham, Thornhill Lees, Wrenthorpe) have not been.

Where abouts is the proposed new train station at Elland to be situated?

Cheers, Eric

Entrance to Lowfields business park just off the bypas. There are those think it should be on the old site, or even at the old Greetland junction location which would serve Elland, several villages and S. Halifax.

Same site as the previous proposal, between Lowfields Way and the River Calder. Its the only possible site in Elland, the only alternative was the old Greetland site.

Its a pretty awful site between an out of town business park, the river and an elevated dual carriagway, which cuts it off from the town. That it would be effectively be a park and ride only station was a major reason why it was cancelled previously. However there are now improved plans for new access routes from the town, better bus provision and even a new footbridge/cyclepath over the river to a new planned development etc.

More details can be found in the current request for budget approval for detailed design work on the WYCA site. GRIP 1-4 due to complete Dec 2018, but Network Rail can't start work on building it until 2021.

However the project was cancelled last time not only because of lack of funding (as often reported on this forum) but also due to the detailed business case not stacking up for a purely park and ride station.

While its contents aren't public, AIUI a new Grip 1 study has been completed which selected Lowfields as the site rather than Greetland.

Fortunately a lot has changed in the last 10years, which will hopefully result in an improved business case.

The Lowfields site probably the most suitable, plenty ofor space for a car park and station buildings. It's not too far from the Town Centre by foot, although Elland doesn't have a centre in the sense of shops and amenities. I assume there will be two entrances one on either side?

The town centre of Elland by my definition is Southgate but even then the centre is roughly the same size as Westbury.

The station at Elland will most certainly be at Lowfields as there is a patch of land which will eventually be the car park, not only it'll serve Eland but also Lowfields itself so in effect it has a dual purpose (triple purpose if you include it as Calderdale's first park and ride site). Bus links to it would just be the normal local buses so the 278, E3 and to an extent the 503, I can't see Metro wanting to fund an extra bus that no one will use just to serve the station.

If the people of Elland feel the walk is too much the 503 runs every 10 minutes to ease their walk.

There's plenty of slack in the Bradford - Huddersfield timetable with trains parked up for ages in Halifax station. I wonder if Northern will try and get better slots next time the timetable is revised?

Will Grand Central services call here?
