The worst is malfunctioning (or wrongly adjusted) air conditioning, which renders the inside of the train like a fridge, while people are dressed for the warm summer's day that they left home in. I never travel without a pack-away quilted coat these days, having been caught out in a chiller compartment once too often. ATW used to be awful for this, although things seem to have improved more recently.

Do you not find it pleasant stepping into a fridge on a hot day? I do.

The 185s when they first came in were perfect for it. It was lovely - sweltering hot summers day outside, you'd get on, and it cooled you right down. Nowadays they aren't as good as they were.

I believe that's because people complained so the temperature went up a notch. LM's 350s are still wonderful on a hot day.

The London Midland 172 air-con is brilliant when it is a hot day.

I was on a bus the other day and a group of teenage girls shouted up the bus for me to close the window, I was sat immediately behind the staircase, and all I could hear beforehand was the banging of windows being closed... So I left it open!

Never have windows open on the TW Metro, all the passengers will look at you once the Metro goes into the Newcastle tunnels...
