I want to take the train to Manchester this Saturday and return on Sunday, having spent the night in town. There are two of us travelling.

There are no period returns - only day returns and singles. Singles are £10 each each - £40 for two for the return trip!

Buying two Duo tickets @ £15.30 brings it down to £30.60, still tempting to take the car and pay for parking.

Any ideas to get it cheaper? I've searched for tickets beyond Manchester, but can't find anything cheaper than the Duos. I was thinking of a return and stopping/starting short in Manchester.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Yes, that would work.

It's perfectly valid to immediately discard an outward portion and only use a return portion.

It's also perfectly valid to only use an outward portion, but the return portion must be held until the outward portion is complete, it can then be discarded.

I doubt you will find an Off Peak Return / Anytime Return which covers this journey for less than £15.30 each. For example Crewe to Manchester or Goostrey to Stalybridge both cost more.

Thanks for this - I did try Stalybridge, Eccles and a few others for returns, nothing came in less than throwing away half a duo.

However, £30 is still more than I want to pay for a journey which I think is worth no more than £11 each in off peak. I'll be driving in and parking at a cost of £5 for the night. I can't justify spending an additional £20 for the train, allowing £5 for fuel.
