I've not kept updated with this thread for a while, but I'm taking it that, since there's a debate about crashes there's no news on 144012 coming back out to play?

Well yes, reducing the risk is a key feature of road safety, but to be fair, there aren't many 30 year old cars in daily use on the roads today. Unlike on the railways where there are significant numbers of passengers carried on old stock. Notwithstanding the limited number of safety litigations introduced in the track, plus the revised seats on a select few units, I'd rather take my chances in a modern carriage than a 30 year old one.

Would you prefer a Pacer to a Mk3 coach, which is even older and also travels faster?

Hmm... Interesting one - the Mk3 isn't built from bus parts, it's a monocoque design, there's less sharp edges inside, plus there's typically a 70t diesel local to cushion the impact....

I was speaking to someone on Grimsby Town station yesterday who said that he has seen 144012 in the centre road at Sheffield (in its new livery and with mods), although I can't find any proof of that (photos etc).

Can't be long to wait now! Hopefully Northern will be using Twitter to shout about it and tell us all when it's out and about!

Very silly omission, IMO.

Yes. Many of the so called 'rural' lines have Universities at the start/end of them and Universities usually means luggage on trains.

FNW actually decided it was necessary to increase the amount of luggage space on their 142s by removing a longitudinal bench seating 3 people and fitting a rack for bikes and luggage.

A particularly silly ommission given that unlike the 142's, the 144's usually have correct provision of overhead luggage racks to start off with, so what exactly they think is to be gained by removing them is anyone's guess.

No doubt there will be some reason behind it and no doubt it will be infuriating.

Quite possibly a passive safety measure. Luggage racks now have to have special dividers to stop bags sliding along them in an accident and no doubt there is a structural strength requirement on the fixings that may be difficult to meet.

Those travelling with end of term luggage tend not to use overhead racks in my experience on Huddersfield to Sheffield services. It's rare I see anything in the racks on pacer services around here. They're too small for most bags, those that do fit tend to be the sort that people prefer to keep close to hand. I don't think it'll be a major problem to be honest.

The safety reasons mentioned above will be an issue too, I'd have thought.

I was on a train in Cambridge once when a bloke grabbed a piece of luggage off the rack and got off quickly. Five minutes later, another man realised it was his, and ran off the train, fortunately just before it set off - I wonder if he'd have been justified in pulling the cord if it had - but that's why I don't like leaving light luggage with anything valuable in it anywhere but immediately above my head.

142s also have overhead luggage racks as built. Though some TOCs have removed them on one side.

You've obviously not been on a Pacer when I have as I usually stow my junk in there. Pacer luggage racks also have a lot more space than many newer trains such as Electrostars.

The idea of things sliding up and down the racks is nonsense as well. The racks on Pacers are a sort of heavy plastic netting which nothing slides up or down.

Yeah have to say that it is one of their plus points that they have good sized overhead luggage racks. So I'm not sure where the suggestion that they don't is coming from!

They are certainly better than those on the cl-150/1 which are not only too small to be of much practical use but are difficult to access because of the close proximity of the lights. Thankfully, the latter was noticed when the cl-150/2 was designed and the lights on these are centrally positioned.
