To anyone in the know:

Could nothing have been done about the horrendously screechy suspension (correct me if it's something else making the noise) on the 458s?

The 458/5s seem to have the same issue, and I actively try and commute on 450s because of this - I assume it's a bit more complex than a spray of WD40?

I really doubt they've done any work not considered essential to add the fifth coach to a four car train, although the drive train has been re-geared for the lower 75 mph speed of the 458/5.

'Screeching' would usually be something caused by wheel/rail interaction, so highly unlikely that anything relevant has been altered during the re-work.

Yes, if you mean the high-pitched deafening whine which seems to emanate from the carriage end/bogie when the train is at a stand, it's still very much there intermittently.

The whole programme is a reconfiguration rather than a refurbishment. It doesn't even look like the toilets have been deep-cleaned.

It's the anti-roll bar links. They are the same on the 458/5 because most of the fleet are almost but not quite at C4 mileage. Only 8534 had a full bogie overhaul.

On the 458/5 the main difference is that the yaw dampers are removed

Ah, that is probably why even the tiniest of movement, one the passenger cannot feel as it is damped by the suspension, sets off that noise :).

I had 455903 last month that was making that noise as well :o after coming to a stop where it got up to good speed, it was the 1743 Waterloo to Shepperton via Richmond.

its even more odd to see a one 458/0 on its own doing the reading line. I'm maybe wrong but because of reliability issues the 458/0 was always formed of 8 cars just in case one of them broke down which did happen often. I believe earlier in this forum someone mentioned on one the refurbished 458/5 which was originally a 458/0 there is one carriage different to all the others. we did swt does have a history of having with carriage different to the other lot look at 455/7

do understand I live in Southampton now where we have decent trains. :) .do we have any news on the return of 458501? it was funny you still get passengers who still forget that only the front 5 cars of a 10 car train will open on plat 9 at Clapham junction

They made a decision to leave them as 8 car all day because connecting the gangways could only be done reliably in the depot, so shortening and lengthening them between the peaks could not be done. Clearly 8 cars were needed for peak capacity, like with the weekday 455s.

Leaving them connected all day saves paths to/from stabling locations, saves drivers, but having a second unit present in case of breakdown is really a side effect.

Breakdown? Often? Most reliable EMU and 2012/2013/2014

There can be show stopper failures but they can keep schedule with one traction pack isolated as a four car.

8501. I'd be shocked to see it before we have a month with an R in it.

You ask too much. Just be thankful it's moving. Next you'll want a working toilet too.

One or more of the toilets actually needed a reset :D. Turns out the air conditioning issues were only in parts of the coach, but the windows in those areas were opened by the crew.

The lowest 458/0 as the rest have been converted.

Haven't seen any around yesterday, where they taking a break?

Have worked 159102/159106/159004 and 159005 in the last 2 days along with 5742.

There was certainly some 458/0's working on the Reading route, Saturday evening so I presume what 458/0's are available are out and about on this route?

The remaining 458/0s are still being worked hard on the Reading route. At Off Peak times you are still most likely to get a 458 on a Reading service.

Saw 524 giving it's wheels a spin in Wimbledon depot going towards the shunters cabin (approx 2045).Also spotted 502 coming through Weybridge (about 3pm?) on Up slow, don't think it was a passenger train.

Yes 458'0s are down the Reading road.My guard spotted the four car 458 at Virginia Water and informed me.
