(how long before Network Rail fit ticket gates as the manned points were unmanned again)
I hope they don't - it would be a pain in the backside if you're waiting on the "paid" concourse and want to hop to Boots to grab some food etc.

A good read, that - I also love the 323s (mostly the sound they make!) and it seems you made a good dent in the Turbostars.

There's a reasonable chippie outside Dorridge station if you find yourself in that part of the world again and needing sustenance.

I saw that after departing towards Solihull, so it was a long walk to Soli town centre to grab something.

Enforced change at Banbury is due to my gold card, not valid on XC north of Banbury.

4th May – The Buxton & Cheshire Explorer Railtour

A little bank holiday Monday trip to Buxton, my first Pathfinders tour since the trip to Carlisle via the S&C behind 70002 last June, blimey has it really been that long. Anyhow, the timings got brought forward due to having to go a different route than planned, so alarm set for a 4:15 start, for a lovely early morning drive to Basingstoke, arriving around 5:00, taking the road nice and steady, and to P4. With the lift replacement works currently at Basingstoke, the side entrance on P4/5 is open for longer hours, so it was faster getting onto the platform, where the staff and a few other passengers were waiting.

Lights were spotted in the distance and to the staff surprise 66150 rolled in, with 8 coaches and 66165 behind, onto platform 3, so it was a shift down the stairs and up to the island to board. Setting off on time at 05:25, it was nice and warm inside, maybe too hot as soon the heating got turned off and windows opened. I was in coach B, next to the door sitting backwards on departure and another aisle seat. Busy service around the table, and the train set off towards Reading West, taking the curve underneath the viaduct and stopping at Tilehurst, Didcot, Swindon before going on the Golden Valley to Kemble, Stroud, Stonehouse. A brief wait at the junction to allow a XC service to storm pass and stopping at Cheltenham Spa and finally Worchester Shrub Hill, no more calling points and the service departed towards Droitwich, taking the Bromsgrove line, and following the route of Techni’s Hereford services (Kings Norton – University), taking New Street non-stop (although we did stop in the station for a red signal).

Out of New Street, passing Aston, then around towards Walsall and onto the Chase Line up towards Rugeley Trent Valley, getting the curve linking the Chase line to the WCML, lesser used by passenger services since the services got cut back from Stafford. Up towards Stone via the Colwich line, with a brief wait in a goods loop outside Stoke (arrived 5 or so minutes early, so had to wait for an EMT service to clear the station). Pausing briefly at Stoke to change staff, and again at Macclesfield to change driver, and out towards Stockport, going through the station and onto the Denton line, where the service reversed and went back out via Stockport to the Buxton line for an enjoyable climb into the hills. Arrival into Buxton and with a brief break before the tour set off again on the optional trip on the former Ashbourne Line to Hindlow.

Quite a few passengers joined who were just doing the branch line (or wanted to get either 66 into the book), so it was out to the sidings for a lengthy break of 45 minutes so that water could be taken on, bit boring that bit, but soon it set off again down towards Briggs Sidings, passing over the viaduct which overlooks Buxton, and climbing towards the quarry, nice peaceful line with good views of the countryside, pausing briefly before carrying on into the quarry area itself, at 1267 ft above sea level, quite high up. Reversing back down towards Buxton with another reversal into the sidings for an 80 minute break at Buxton itself, just enough time to have a look around and get supplies from Co-Op for the trip home.

Back onto the train at Buxton and away again, back into the sidings and out for the final reversal (with 165 leading, and me going forward, glorious 66 noises), around the Peak Forest quarry area, which again the route is quite beautiful in parts, both with the rocks and the countryside. Into industrial area with several other 60s & 66s around, and out, taking the curve towards Chinley West (new track as I had previously covered the curve towards Chinley East a couple months ago on a UK railtour to Buxton), and out onto the Hope Valley line (after a brief wait for a TPE to pass). Storming along the Hope Valley line and through Disley Tunnel, the regular passenger line leading to go down to Hazel Grove, and onto the red track towards the mid-cheshire line, joining at Northanden Junction.

Down the Mid Cheshire line, passing Navigation Road, stopping briefly at Altrincham & Ashley, passing many expensive looking houses, before reaching industrial area at Northwich, taking the curve behind Northwich station and onto the “Northwich to Sandbach Branch” of the former London & North Western railways, closed to passengers around 1960, a single track with a passing loop around the site of Middlewich (lovely “Where’s the station?” sign on the fence), but slow, a passenger on the table opposite had a sat nav and the average speed was 18 mph. Brief wait under the wires before joining the Crewe – Manchester line at Sandbach, and down to Crewe for a driver change, before setting off again down the main WCML to Stafford and taking the curve at Rugeley to rejoin the outward leg.

This time Birmingham New Street was passed without stopping (although not the first non-stop New Street run for me), darkness had fallen, the rain had started, so it was time for a rest. Arrival into Basingstoke was a few minutes down at 00:50, where it must have rained a lot during the day as the roads were very wet. Arrival home around 01:40 so an enjoyable but rather long day, which will probably be repeated next bank holiday Monday as I’m on the Pathfinder from Salisbury to Liverpool

Anyway, pictures:

6th May – A quick mid-week trip to London

Due to being invited to a meeting in my company’s HQ building in London, I had the chance of a quick evening peak bash. Quick hop on the 10:59 departure from Grateley towards Woking getting 159108 in the book for the first time of 2015, where I did some waiting, pair of 450s from Alton were dud, so was a service from Portsmouth, next pair of 450s from Basingstoke were dud and so was the 455s on a Woking stopper, so I decided to jump onto 444036 for a quick trip to Clapham.

Across to P10 to see what 455s were around and the first service was winner 455734, and I was in luck, it was a triple set, with 456017 in the middle and 456019 behind, my first pair of red 456s (and 2nd trip on 456s overall after a trip from Guildford to Ascot last year), seemed nice inside, seats bit close together. Jumping off at Vauxhall and pretty much straight onto winner 455847 leading dud 455718 back out to Clapham. Across to P10 again and after a pair of duds, dud 455736 arrived with winner 455705 in tow, which I took for another trip to Vauxhall. Exiting the station to get lunch (with the gateline assistant allowing me back in), I jumped onto duds 458530/458531 into Waterloo, my brief time had ended.

Northern line (6 minute wait for a northbound service felt quite long) to Leicester Square, then Piccadilly to Holborn for my meeting, a couple hours later the central line took me to Liverpool Street, with an idea to clear the shacks between Cheshunt & Tottenham Hale, especially Angel Road. First service towards Tottenham Hale was in the hands of a Stansted Express branded service formed of winners 379026 & 379014, hopping off at Tottenham Hale after forming a brief plan using the free wifi on board.

Next service was from Stratford, winner 317672 taking me to Enfield Lock, a couple fare dodgers got caught out, probably managed to get into Stratford from one of the stations on the Shenfield line which lack barriers. First plan was to catch a service to Cheshunt to make a 4 minute connection, it was a winner, but when it just sat at Enfield Lock for a few minutes, I ditched it, good job as it didn’t depart for another couple minutes, by which time it was around 7 minutes down. Winners 317650 & 317515 took me the short 4 mile distance to the 2nd least used station in London (according to Wikipedia), with a limited peak-time only service, Angel Road. North circular to the south (which at this time was pretty much at a standstill), scrap yard to the west, industrial area with a busy road to the east, the only way in and out the station is along a footpath and climb up to another road to the south. Add to this that it had started raining again, I got a bit wet waiting for 317669 to show up.

Taking me to Waltham Cross, before anybody asks yes I did have a zone 1-9 card, with 317657 & 317664 running fast to Northumberland Park, the Victoria line depot on one side, and yes there was hardly any 2009 stock in the depot. Another brief wait before fresh duds 317515/317650 returned from Stratford to take me to Cheshunt, running a bit late due to congestion. Across the bridge at Cheshunt with a wait before watching a triple 379 on a Cambridge service rush pass (something to note in mind for a 379 hunt as they stop at Tottenham Hale). Winner 317506 arrived with dud (my first dud 317 of the day, apart from the repeated pair) 317508 taking me down the line to Ponders End

Brief connection here, made longer with the service being delayed, and it arrived, rather busy 317649 & 317886, with some school kids managing to get into the drivers cab of 886 and decided to play with the horn for the short trip to Brimsdown, my final station along the route, the driver got out and I guess when down to the rear unit to secure it and to kick the remaining kids out. 20 minute gap before the next southbound, so I headed across to the McDonalds to redeem a free drink voucher, just to get rid of it, and back to the station. The next southbound service had been cancelled, the next northbound service was running a bit late, although the PIS kept on saying “Please Stand Back from the Please Stand Back from the”, even though no trains were due to rush through. Eventually winners 317503 & 317881 arrived to take me to Cheshunt, not as busy as the previous service as this was a Broxbourne terminator.

Bit of a wait at Cheshunt before the next service down the Seven Sisters line arrived, both duds in the shape of 315844 & 315805 taking me to Theobalds Grove, mainly to get it out of the way as the other stations on that line (from Turkey Street) are within zones 1-6, where Theobalds Grove is in zone 7 (or 8?). Back to Cheshunt on dud 315825 leading winner 315849, and a dash across the platform with dud 317514 leading winner 317892, the set I jumped on at Enfield Lock and ditched earlier, back to Tottenham Hale. Quick dash to the Victoria line for a Victoria line service to Victoria, and jumping on the first Southern service out managed to score me 455819 to Clapham. Timetabled to give a 2 minute connection with the 20:20 from Waterloo to Exeter, arrived into Clapham a minute down, so it was a run, down to the subway, and to P9 jumping on the Exeter train (formed of 159007 & 159104) just as the doors started to close. Tight connection by far, but I made it without an hour to wait for the next Salisbury service.

One interesting thing is that the line from Tottenham Hale to Cheshunt is quite busy, no wonder why the stoppers have to alternate stops.

Anyhows:

Great writeup and pics :)

What's everyone got against BHM? For anyone used to London terminals, it's a deserted, civilised oasis!

Do any of these railtours use air conditioned (mk3 etc) coaches?

9th May – West Yorkshire Day

Making use of some of my last East Coast freebie tickets for a Saturday trip to Leeds, as I couldn’t think of anything better to do, gives me a chance to clear the Wakefield connecting line curve & some more Northern units. So for the first time in a few weeks, the alarm sounded at 4:55, and I rolled out of bed, picking up my day sack and for a quick drive to the station. I was feeling a bit lazy and didn’t fancy the walk home late at night if it was raining.

159020 with a very energy fuelled guard rolled in, sneaking in as quietly a 159 can do, before taking me to Clapham, slight annoyance when a passenger boarded at Andover and ignoring the other available table seats decided to sit opposite me to get his Macbook out (and not use it), less space to spread my legs. At Clapham Junction I jumped over to P10 to await the next Vauxhall bound train, wasn’t expecting much as my required 455s are slowly being reduced, and dud 455854 rolled in with winner 455904 behind, how unexpected. Anyhow to Vauxhall and crossing down to the Underground platform. I prefer changing at Vauxhall as it’s less crowded than Victoria.

To Kings Cross St Pancras via the Victoria line and exiting with pretty much an hour to kill before the 08:03 departure to Leeds, powering up RTT to give me Great Northern services which called at Finsbury Park, and which platform they were due out from, first pick was a dud 365 on the main-line side, so I headed over to see what was around on the suburban platforms, no winners in sight so I jumped onto 313033 for the run to Finsbury Park to see what was coming back in. Several duds later I decided to call it a day at waiting and jumped onto 313044/313036 back to Kings Cross, no luck this morning (and where were the 321s which were normally around Kings Cross this time of day)

Heading via WH Smiths to pick up breakfast (a very unhealthy Chicken & Mushroom pasty), and a newspaper and headed across to P4, an Edinburgh bound service (08:00) was loading on P5, as I walked down the end of the platform to grab the number of the 91, which was hidden from sight when I arrived earlier on the 313s, winner 91127 was at the front (with dud DVT 82214) at the back, taking my nice table seat in coach C, phone on charge, reading the newspaper as the train started filling, 08:02 and the doors closed and the train started moving, before coming to a halt just before the tunnel. The Grand Central HST zoomed pass, and the train manager announced that the service had developed a fault which was being looked into. 30 or so minutes later the service reversed back the 300-or so metres back into the platform, announced that the fault couldn’t be fixed and hence the service was cancelled. The next Leeds train was on P7, so it was a bit of a rush to board and get a seat.

First Class was declassified before departure, no reservations due to a late set-swap (Edinburgh was on the windows on boarding, so I’m guessing this set was meant to be going to Edinburgh, but got blocked in by the 8:03 so another service was used for the 08:30 departure. Anyhow dud 91111 “For the Fallen” was leading with new DVT 82208 at the back, full and standing after Stevenage, with the train manager announcing that there was no reservations and passengers were free to seat in any available seat (although a couple passengers appeared not to listen and tried to demand an old couple to move from ‘their’ seats). I stayed on and bailed early at Wakefield Westgate.

First service which I could catch was a service from Sheffield to Leeds, originally plan was to catch it and ditch at Outwood with a 5 minute connection for a Leeds – Doncaster service, that plan went out the window when it was running 5 minutes late, other movement was a XC HST heading towards Plymouth (where both power-cars were required :(). Winner 321901 rolled in to take me the short distance to my first new station of the day at Sandal & Agbrigg, the connection at Fitzwilliam is tight (1 minute), however I probably could have made it as an XC service was running late, and hence the Doncaster – Leeds service was delayed by around 4 minutes. Anyhow Sandal & Agbrigg, couple platforms on top of a bridge, a station where you have to exit via a long ramp to a road, go underneath a bridge along a narrow platform and up another ramp to the Leeds bound platform, which has a ticket machine in a little bus shelter. Winner 322484 rolled in, still with “First” scot-rail safety information stickers on the windows (with “First” blacked out), taking me back to Wakefield Westgate.

I had a couple picks, the required Pacer I gave up earlier would be making a comeback, or I could wait to see what was on the service from London. I decided to attack the pacer 142022 as my unofficial unit bash rule is “to catch the first winner possible which I hold a valid ticket for and doesn’t equal a large time penalty”, besides who knows when I might come across this particular pacer again (as the Heaton 142s can work in a large area). Back to Sandal & Agbrigg and across the platform for a brief NRDMUG action, what would be working back from Sheffield. Dud 144013 (and probably my highest distance 144 with the last time at having was from Morecambe to Leeds back in November) taking me to Outwood. Another station involving an exit to get to the other platform, up stairs to the road across and down some more stairs, as 322484 arrived back from Leeds which I jumped on to Wakefield Westgate. The Wakefield connecting line remained uncovered (previous attempts had failed), so I was happy when the next departure was a Huddersfield bound service.

Quick exit (surprised the rover ticket issued in sunny Andover opened the barriers both directions) to the Greggs to pick up a baguette & drink, and back to the platform as winner (and 2nd 155) 155344 rolled in. A brief few minutes later and it departed down the curve to Wakefield Kirkgate. Having just missed a Grand Central 180, I powered up RTT to locate the next move which I could cover (i.e. no boarding the Sheffield service which runs fast to Barnsley), I identified 2 Leeds bound services, a slow service which went via Castleford or an Express which went direct. The first was a dud 142, but the 2nd service was winner 158902 taking me the unknown distance to Leeds.

RTT bingo time, to identify required units which I could catch, first was a dud 185 towards Huddersfield, which was binned for the 2nd service which I could reasonably catch (not that 333 which departed 1 minute after the service arrived from P2), winner 150204 was waiting on a Manchester Victoria service, so I jumped on board (quite busy, sat opposite someone making an impression of a cement mixer when chewing some gum) and alighted at Bramley (West Yorkshire), less anybody gets it confused with little Bramley on the Basingstoke – Reading line. Platforms set apart across a bridge (I’m guessing there used to be more lines in this area going by an old bridge carrying nothing), not the easiest to get from one to another, down stairs, across a busy road, and up more stairs. But I made it with time to spare for 158790 to roll in to take me back to Leeds. Another RTT firing time, this time picking out a Sheffield bound 144020 to take me back to Wakefield Westgate. My eye was drawn to a VTEC HST which had a required 43 at the front. RTT was suggesting to board the next VTEC Leeds service to have a good connection (the service from Sheffield giving a +2).

Bit surprised when duds 43311/43310 rolled up to take me back to Leeds and onto the former EMT set led by 43305 with dud 43306 bringing up the rear to Wakefield Westgate. 321901 did the honours back to Leeds. RTT bingo time again, next available service which I could catch was a dud 150, with the next up being a FTPE service, when 185136 rolled in I quickly went across to P16 and jumped on down to Huddersfield with a 15 minute wait. First 2 185s heading back to Leeds were dud, but my eye was on a 150 heading towards Leeds as a stopper, so once the 2nd 185 had arrived, I made my move to get onto 150214 which took me to Deighton, where I had a 10 minute connection with a service back from Wakefield Westgate. I suspected this might have been the 155, but was surprised when 150141 arrived a few minutes late (which messed up a connection for a Hull bound double 170) to take me to Huddersfield for a short wait. Next arrival was winner 185150 which I took to Leeds, hopping on another winning 185 in the shape of 185124 back to Huddersfield.

Keeping my eye on the service to Sheffield (dud 144), and I headed back to P8, next service was in the shape of winner 185149 taking me back to Leeds. Next RTT bingo identified a Nottingham bound 158791 which took me to Wakefield Kirkgate, with 158797 taking me back to Leeds (semi required movement due to next train being in 20 minutes), back to RTT and identified required 150119 which I was thinking about, ditch at Bramley or stay on to score another new shack with a 15 minute wait. I alighted at New Pudsey, which has a footbridge, with a 15 minute or so wait thinking what could the next service be (formed of 3 carriages instead of 2 today from the PIS), sadly it was dud 158755. Back to Leeds, with another spin of RTT, although this time I had my eye on the VTEC departure. Powered by 91101 Flying Scotsman with new DVT 82212 at the front, back to Wakefield Westgate.

I had an option, see what the service from Sheffield was, or wait for a HST towards Harrogate. When a required 142 arrived, I had a hard choice, required 142 or unknown HST, needless to say former FGW unit 142064 did the honours back to Leeds (and annoyingly the front 43 of the Harrogate HST was required when I saw it in Leeds a bit later). Calling it a day as I headed out of the station, identifying a McDonalds to grab some dinner (plus a free muffin in exchange for a free apple pie voucher as they had run out of apple pies), and heading back to the platforms. Dud 91117 “West Riding Limited” was at the rear of the set with new DVT 82227 leading. Last VTEC service southbound of the evening (and last service overall to arrive into Kings Cross). A full ticket check was carried out after Doncaster, where the guard picked up a couple slightly drunken passengers who were trying to dodge payment to Kings Cross, they decided to bail at Retford (after paying the anytime single to Retford, god knows what they ended up doing next as no more southbound services). Unusually for a VTEC service in that it arrived into Kings Cross around 7 minutes early.

Keeping an eye on movements for any required 365s with nothing spotted, so I headed to the underground, Victoria to Oxford Circus, few minute wait before a Bakerloo down to Waterloo. RTT time for any required 450s, first service I spotted had a dud 450 behind, but with it being a double unit a quick walk up the platform with 450024 leading 450074, well a winner 450 was a winner 450 and it took me to Clapham where I naughtily alighted at a Pick-up only station. Winner 455719 rolled into P10 which took me to Vauxhall, a dud later and 455713/455742 took me back to Clapham for the next potential 450s. Both were duds, so I put an eye out and winner 455858 rolled in to take me back to Vauxhall, where I timed it wrong and had a 10 minute wait before 455919 arrived with 455858 behind (I can only assume I wrote the number down incorrectly for that rear 455). Back to Clapham, next up was a dud 444 to Southampton before a double 159 set (how lucky as this is normally a single) with 159015 leading 159004. 159015 making its first appearance for me since November last year, as usual this service was busy until Basingstoke (where it overtakes the 444 to Southampton as the 444 stops at Farnborough/Fleet), and quiet afterwards. Back to Grateley and home to relax

A busy day, without many pictures:

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
You've seem to have been rather busy with various railtours recently.

I pulled off Angel Road last year (on an October Friday morning).

My next visit to London will be the beginning of July, as I have a meeting that weekend. When I arrive on the Wednesday afternoon, I intend to do some cranking on Great Eastern Railway metals. Then on Thursday, head to Devon and Cornwall to do track bashing and fit in the Coombe Jct Halt call. Travel back to London on the overnight train on the Friday.

I booked 1st Class from Waterloo - Pinhoe. Are any complimentary refreshments served in 1st Class on the 158/9 that run to Exeter?

Meanwhile, for information, my next bash will be this Friday. I will be doing the Cheshire Day Ranger, and hopefully, will have completed the Grand Junction Railway metals. My June bash will be predominantly Midland Railway metals in Manchester, which will be covered by the Wayfarer.

In peace

Some very productive trips Kite159! You've been doing better than me for sure!

Finally caught up after being outrageously busy lately, I keep forgetting there's an HST to Harrogate now, rather than just the southbound one in the mornings as it used to be!

There's a few rakes of air conditioned mark 2s used on railtours.

Cargo-D used to use mark 3s as first class accommodation on their tours, and Cotswold Rail had their own HST in around 2007, but I don't think that at present any mark 3s see passenger use on railtours (there's a handful of sleepers used for staff accommodation on certain long distance tours).

Great trip reports. I'm going to have to start doing a few railtours, the last time I did a railtour was pre-1999!!!!

Also thanks for the advice about using Vauxhall instead of Victoria maybe you should have kept that one to yourself? ;)

At leastyou got 300 metres of haulage on a required 91 at Kings Cross and I took it you got bored sat there with the photo of being just sat outside of Kings Cross?

Serious question though. How do you put photos within your report? I tried it for my last report but could only figure out how to do them as thumbnails.

Cheers

No freebies on SWT in First Class (bar morning peak services towards London where you get free coffee/tea)

AndyB:

I got bored sitting outside Kings Cross so I took a random photo.

I upload the pictures to Flickr (other photo hosting sites are available) and link to them using the URL/IMG codes (which gives the ability to click on the photo for a larger picture).

Vauxhall/Victoria, I prefer Vauxhall as it is generally less crowded than Victoria, although at 7:00 in the morning I doubt there is much in the way of timings. Depends what rolls in Clapham J first

Looks like another couple of good trips there. Thanks for the write ups. I have never been on a railtour. It looks like a good way to get some of the rarer bits of track covered, and a nice day out too.

Really enjoyed reading your report from West Yorks and glad you had a good day out despite the delay. I will be about there next week. Were you using a West Yorks Train Day Rover? If so well done on getting it at Andover. I tried to get one at Skipton two weeks ago and they refused because it wasn't in West Yorkshire (despite me already having a ticket to Steeton!).

Although I suspect looking at the price, it was a Train+Bus rover (£7.90 rather than £7), although that was down to me giving them the wrong description. The only sight issue I have with Leeds is where as if I book early enough with Virgin West Coast, I can get £18 advances from Grateley to Manchester, the cheapest VTEC+connection ticket to Leeds is £39 (hence sometimes it might be cheaper to head up towards Manchester and onto a South Pennies Day Rover, if VTEC hasn't got the £13 London - Leeds tickets available)

10th May – *Insert A Title Here*

After finding out that the 09:00 service from Willesden Junction goes from the low-level platforms using the curve from low level to the North London Line (a PSUL movement), this was on my agenda, as well as clearing out the remaining stations on the Sutton loop.

A nice little drive to Andover in the morning, purchasing my travel card for the day, and getting ready to roll when 159105 rolled in for a peaceful run to Clapham Junction, deciding to alight at Clapham and use the West London Line up towards Willesden, big mistake. After visiting Sainsburys for a bit of food & drink, I headed to P17 and jumped on 377701 for the trip to Kensington (Olympia), first time I believe alighting from the NR platforms, previously used with the district line. I couldn’t help noticing the former platform on the southbound side, I’m guessing there used to be another loop for southbound services. Anyhow the next LO service was due at 08:40. 08:40 rolled around and nothing, 08:43 rolled around and I heard a train coming, and it was the Southern ECS movement to Shepherd’s Bush (to form the 2nd 377/7 on the “Junction Union” service, Watford Junction to Clapham Junction.

The service had been cancelled, so plans of doing that PSUL binned, and I jumped onto a District line service from Kenny O to Earl’s Court, changing with a brief wait for another district line heading to Tower Hill, I stayed on until Blackfriars, where I alighted and went up to the NR platforms. Once more my travelcard was rejected by those foolish barriers, and I went up the wrong side, so a nice walk down the platform to the southbound subway and to P1. 319013 rolled in to take me to Haydons Road, nice little station, before 319430 arrived to take me backwards to Tooting. This is when I noticed things were going slowly wrong with the Thameslink network, more on that later.

Unexpected winner (considering I only needed 2x 319/4s) 319455 rolled in to take me around the loop to Sutton Common, where I had to do some thinking as the below picture would tell you that after the next northbound service, everything else showing was down as “cancelled”:

319457 rolled in with 319370 (which I didn’t notice until alighting) to take me to the final station on the loop, St Helier. It was time to fire up Google Maps, as I headed out of the station onto the road, and stopping at the bus stop, to await a bus on route 154 to Morden. Nice double decker for a 10 minute ride to the end of the line to Morden underground station, the southern tip of the Northern line. Down the stairs onto a Northern line service to Elephant Von Castle, and a Bakerloo service from the Elephant to London Marylebone.

Due to the Metropolitan line being closed south of Harrow on the Hill, Chiltern were running extra services between Marylebone & Harrow on the Hill, so once up to Marylebone, I checked the departures for services I could catch (so no Birmingham fasts to Bicester, nor the Non-Stop Gerrards Cross services). First up was a Harrow special, rolling in far train on P1, and it was winner 165036, happy days, for a nice little ride to Harrow on the Hill, where 10 minutes later winner 165004 rolled in with dud 165038 on the rear from Aylesbury, so it was nice and cosy.

Back at Marylebone, it was down to the underground for the short hop to Paddington, just to see if any of my required FGW Turbos were working a Reading/Oxford stopper. Next departure on the half hourly service was from deepest darkness P14, and I was in luck as I spotted a winner. Once I alighted at Southall, I noted down the number of the front unit, and it was dud 166216, but with winner 166211 on the back. Arrival into Southall was on the main-line platforms, the relief lines being closed (Crossrail work?). Brief moment of rest to get to the island platform, via the gates to await the next working into Paddington, and it was my old friend, mega dud 165118, and dud 165106. Deciding (probably foolishly) to jump off at Ealing Broadway and head to the Central Line.

Quite a busy Central line service, which was quite warm, I ditched it at White City for a brief walk along the road outside the BBC television centre to Wood Lane, where a circle line service (nice and cool) took me to Liverpool Street. Having a non-stop run via Royal Oak was good to see the station getting ready to be reopened. I was getting hungry so I took a brief internal to visit the Tesco Metro just outside Liverpool Street station, to grab a sandwich & a couple bottles of Pepsi Max which were on a BOGOF, nice cool drink. Back to the station, where I decided to get on the next Stratford bound service (final stop was Southend), with winner 321360 leading 321322, it departed on time but for some reason managed to lose 5 minutes getting to Stratford.

Time to fire up RTT for some RTT bingo, identifying services which I could catch (so no first stop Shenfield), keeping an eye on what 378s were around to see if any of the magical required trio would roll in. Anyhow, first up was a C2C service (running from Liverpool Street this weekend due to track renewal works), and it was a winner, 357009 taking me along the GEML to Forest Gate and up towards Woodgrange Park and to Barking, where I alighted. Quite a busy service (and odd that it was the only single unit service I spotted that day). Had a choice, go back to Stratford or to Upminster, next departure was to Upminster and leading was dud 357206 with winner 357020 behind, so to Upminster.

Having just missed a Barking bound service, I had a 10 minute wait before new super-dud 357022 rolled in with winner 357039 behind. Back to Barking, where a quick connection over the island saw me onto winners 357023 & 357007 to Upminster, where an even quicker connection over the footbridge saw e onto winner 357040 leading dud 357210, staying on board this time to Stratford. RTT time, and across the platform for a Shenfield stopper, leading was winner 315817 with winner 315801 behind, blimey a double winning 315 set. Riding the short distance to Maryland (where we are now approaching just after departure), crossing over to the fast line to make use of Maryland P4. My god that stairwell was smelly, smelt like someone had used it for a toilet, out of the safety door and across to P1 (might have mixed those platform numbers up) to board winners 315843 & 315848 back to Stratford.

Next service towards Liverpool Street was a dud single 321, no required 378s were in sight, so the next service I could catch was a Southend Victoria bound service, a rather busy 321320 which called at Romford, where it managed to lose time, but I couldn’t help noticing the next Shenfield stopper was very heavily loaded, it left passengers behind at Stratford. Quick dash to the London bound platform at Romford boarding 321354 & 321314 as the doors were closing for the ride back to Stratford. Again it was a case of looking at RTT for departures, the next Romford bound service was the same dud 321, and the two blue 315s had come back from Liverpool Street. I had my eye on a Cambridge bound 379 sitting on P11 which was going to be investigated if the next service was dud.

However it didn’t need to be investigated as dud 357030 rolled in with winner 357026 behind, taking me to Barking, where a couple minutes later winners 357021 & 357214 took me to Upminster. Deciding to call it a day, and thinking that I’ve never done the District line dive under to the East of Barking [used by Westbound services], having only ever done the district line east from Barking to Upminster, so it was onto a lovely district line service, under the tracks and over the flyover (another new bit of LU track for me) and along to West Ham, where they were terminating due to engineering works.

Down to the Jubilee platform to catch a Jubilee train (I love the motor noises) to Waterloo, to have a look to see if there was any required SWT units floating around. Pair of 444s were dud, a single 444 was a dud, pair of 450s & single 455s were duds, last service I could catch before the 159s, was a Basingstoke/Alton splitter, leading was dud 450023 with winner 450007 behind. I stayed on board for the short hop to Clapham Junction (although if I wanted to I could stay on until Woking and have a 4 minute connection, but decided against it as I was getting a bit tired).

The 159s were 159105 (again) and 159006, on an Exter/Bristol service, so both halves were busy, but I managed to get a nice table seat for the ride back to Andover, and going via the takeaway pizza place for evening meal, headed home, to put my feet up.

A very busy and productive time had there! Shame about the PSUL move not being makeable after all, the risk of not leaving time for an important move!

Ridiculously jealous of the 357s as I need so many of them!

Congratulations on clearing out the shacks in my neck of the woods!

That PSUL move is a dodgy one. It took me several goes to get it as the train seemed to depart from the high level platforms. Better luck next time.

And me! From memory I only have 2 down as had but I know I have had another 2 that I didn't write down.

Might be a service I aim for first whenever up in London on a Sunday, to hunt it down (this time taking no chances and making use of the Bakerloo)

357s are easier to get on weekdays, and with the December (I think) timetable change where most if not all will call at Limehouse/West Ham will be good to hop between Barking/West Ham.

Meanwhile today I went along the Reading - Waterloo line to a certain station in SWT land which only sees a handful of services stopping on a weekday, and only access if you don't have a pass to get onto the MOD land, is along a long path.

Longcross has been ticked off (plus other stations between Reading and Virginia Water), after telling the guard on the service to London that yes I do mean to alight at Longcross and didn't get it confused with Virginia Water :)

The two Winnersh stations is quite walk friendly

16th May – A Tyne & Tees Day Ranger

The idea of today was to use up 2 more East Coast freebie tickets (with the remaining freebie being used in the end of June to get me back from Edinburgh), so I decided a little day trip to Pacer central, otherwise known as Newcastle. Booked onto the 08:00 departure, and on the 18:30 from Newcastle, the 19:00 service from Aberdeen being an hour later into Newcastle due to a diversion in Scotland (arrival into Kings Cross would have been 23:20, which would have been a challenge to get back to Waterloo in time for the 23:40 to Salisbury).

After a brisk walk to the station, and awaiting the 05:27 departure towards London, unusually I wasn’t alone, 3 other passengers were boarding at the same time. 159019 was on duty, last logged the day before taking me back home from Basingstoke from my Longcross linear bash. The 48 miles to Woking pushing this particular 159 over the 500 mile mark. Why alight at Woking I hear you ask, well we overtook the Southampton to Waterloo stopper, and I had noticed on the front was a required 450, which only gave a 10 minute time penalty into Waterloo. Across to P1 to await as 450123 rolled in with super dud 450546 on the rear. To Clapham Junction where I alighted for a brief fester to see if anything required rolled up to take me to either Victoria or Vauxhall.

A pair of dud 455s later, I crossed over to the Southern platforms, and was rewarded with winner 377103 with dud 377436 on the rear. A few minutes later I was in Victoria and a brief cross to the Victoria line platforms for a Victoria line service to Kings Cross St Pancras, and I went up to Kings Cross to see if there was any Great Northern stuff rolling around which I required for a quick Finsbury dash. Nothing much in the way of winners, some dud 313s, so I jumped onto the first service out formed of 317338 to Finsbury, and with one look at the time decided the next service towards Kings Cross would be a required movement, to give me time to pick up something for breakfast and a newspaper. Dud 317337 moved one step closer to gaining super-dud status (3rd time at riding), as it took me into Kings Cross.

After grabbing something to eat and a newspaper, I headed across to the main-line platforms, where the 08:00 was waiting, led today by winner 91113 with dud DVT 82201 on the rear (the 4th time in having this particular DVT on the end of an East Coast service). Finding my nice table seat on a busy service, and relaxing for the non-stop run to York, arriving into the south of York a good few minutes early where the train lighten up a bit. Bit of a delay departing York, but soon enough it was to Darlington and then to Newcastle where I alighted.

RTT time to have a look at what was moving, deciding to jump on the first thing which was required and which was covered by the Tyne & Tees Rover (i.e. nothing north of Newcastle excluding the Morpeth stoppers). First up was a Hexham bound service, formed of winner 142020, which annoyingly I should have gave up as a double winning HST set rolled in for Kings Cross, never mind, my first Heaton 142 of the day taking me to my first new station call of the day at the MetroCentre, 10 or so minutes later another service from Hexham arrived formed of winner 156448.

Happy days, as I was planning to getting some new track for me, in the shape of the curve from Stockton towards Thornaby (previously covered the side towards Eaglescliffe on a Grand Central HST), and having a 156 was handy as I didn’t fancy a long 47 mile trip on a 142. Anyhow, nice trip down the Durham coast, a peaceful part of the world, with a little car-boot sale going on somewhere I can’t remember. Pretty soon the 156 rolled into Thornaby, where I had a brief wait before 142079 rolled in to take me to Middlesbrough, with a bit of a dash to get to the other platform with winner 142084 back to Thornaby. The TPX service I had just missed, so it was another brief wait before winner 142090 rolled in with dud 142086, taking me back to Middlesbrough and another quick dash to be rewarded with 142024 back again to Thornaby. This time I stayed on the platform to await the TPX, I knew it was dud 185120 (turning it into a super-dud with 3rd time at riding), but I decided to score a shack.

5 and a half miles later, the 185 rolled into Yarm, or Yawn as there is nothing around, the settlement known as Yarm being a good mile and a bit away, so the 15 minutes was spent on the platform, enjoying some peace, before dud 185149 rolled in taking me back to guess where, Thornaby. A quick look at RTT seemed to suggest there was 5 sets on the Saltburn/Darlington-Bishops diagram, and the next set would be an unknown, and I was rewarded with winner 142094 back to Middlesbrough, well it would be rude not to. Another quick dash on the platforms and 142086/142090 had rolled in, deciding to stay on until Darlington, where it would continue to form the 2 hourly service to Bishops Auckland. Could have probably stayed on and scored a shack along that line but decided to focus on something non-pacer related, Chester Le Street.

A dud XC voyager was first so I gave that a miss, the next service being formed of winner 91104 with new DVT 82200 at the rear, taking me to Durham, where I spent a few minutes trying to work out connections, this VTEC would arrive into Newcastle 1 minute before a XC service south which would connect up with the TPX towards Chester Le Street, so I gave it a miss (good thing too as the VTEC lost a couple minutes rolling into Newcastle according to RTT. Only option for me was a 30 minute fester, where a required voyager arrived, a required 185 arrived, and another required 91. Durham station itself is quite strange, to change platforms you need to go through ticket gates (open), down a poorly signposted staircase to an elevated walkway underneath the main-line, up some more stairs and onto the other platform. Not the easiest to do in any sort of hurry. My festering paid off with the reward of winner 185111 taking me to Chester Le Street.

Famous for having its own independent booking office and owning nationalrail.com, and being a Northern managed station, which a tiny handful of Northern services call there, plus a random XC call. Mainly served by TPX services on a 2 hourly basis, and thankfully the calls are timed within 15 minutes of each other. So after a brief photo call of a VTEC service storming down south, I was onto the platform to await winner 185131 to Durham, where annoyingly due to the layout of Durham station meant I missed a required 91 heading back north. Deciding to jump on the next thing moving, saw me onto dud 220028 to Newcastle, first time into the South facing bays.

RTT bingo time, a Middlesbrough bound service was dud (thankfully it was as the connections were a bit rubbish at both Heworth & Sunderland), but the next Metrocentre bound service towards Hexham was winner 142067, with the 2+3 bench seating, a visitor to Heaton? Winner 156479 taking me back to Newcastle, where it had appeared a VTEC service had failed in the platform, with many passengers awaiting the next service south (17:00 departure appeared to have failed), so that idea went out of the window. RTT suggested the next Metro-Centre service would be formed by the pacer which had been sitting on P8 for most of the day, this was required, so with limited time, I headed over to watch it being unlocked and started, so I boarded winner 142015 heading to my final new station of the day in the shape of Dunston, noting that the same service on its return would call there as well, so good chance to get that shack cleared. Bit surprise when it departed heading north crossing the High Level Bridge and around the curve to rejoin the ECML, not required track for me as I did that movement last year on a Scotrail 156. Just need to find something which uses the other sides of that curve (so a service from Sunderland which goes into Newcastle via the King Edward VII Bridge).

Dunston, an island platform with not a lot else, little waiting shelter, and bike shelter. Eventually 142015 rolled back in to take me back to Newcastle. The end of a busy day with nothing else to do in the 20-odd minutes, so a quick visit to the loos, and Sainsburys to grab some dinner, and I was back on the platform to await the 18:30 departure. New DVT 82206 was leading with winner 91106 on the rear, although it was a stopper (no nice non-stop York to London run for me tonight), picked up a few drunken passengers at York, and it stopped between Temple Hirst Junction & Shaftholme Jn (RTT) for around 20 minutes due to signalling problems. Some BTP members boarded at Doncaster to escort a couple drunken passengers off the service, must have been causing a bit of menace. However departure from Doncaster was 20 minutes down which meant my 40 minute connection between Kings Cross and Waterloo would be tight (aiming for the 22:20 departure to Salisbury).

The VTEC gained back 10 minutes so arrival into the Cross was 10 down, so I was happy, making my way to the underground and to Victoria, where dud 455823 was on the next service from Victoria which called at Clapham, taking me to Clapham Junction, where a lot of cosplayers were around from a show, so I decided to stay on the platform to await the arrival of the Salisbury service, 159022, previously my least travelled 159, only being on 90 miles, and last had in November, so the 68 miles, 55 chain trip back to Grateley pushing it over 100 miles, still bottom of the league table, although only 30 miles less than 159103 now.

End of a busy day, just shy of 844 miles covered, 17 new units in the book, with 5 new shacks covered. Farewell East Coast rewards.

Anyhow, some pictures:

The 156 in the second to last shot is 156451 :)

The curve heading from Heworth direction onto the King Edward Bridge is used by the 1833 Middlesbrough-Newcastle and 1926 Nunthorpe-Newcastle (Saturdays only) according to http://www.psul4all.free-online.co.uk/2015.htm

I've scored it in a random instance of luck on a 1630 Newcastle-Nunthorpe starting short at Newcastle due to disruption.

I guess he means it would have started at Hexham normally?

A very good trip by the looks of it, certainly looks like a Tyne and Tees has been good to all of us who've done a trip report on one this year!

I guessed you meant either MetroCentre or Hexham :)

17th May – Another Day on the Southern

The idea of today’s little Sunday trip was to clear some more shacks on the coastway lines, as well as the Seaford branch. And due to it being a Sunday I had to be a bit cleverer regarding tickets to Southern land, owning to the hourly service to/from Southampton.

After a nice drive to Romsey, parking up at my usual place and walking up the stairs to the station to await the arrival of the FGW, a XC voyager passed through as ECS before double super dud 158958 rolled in to take me to Fareham. The reason why I swapped at Fareham is down the 08:25 stopper from Southampton to Brighton goes via the airport and is over taken by the FGW semi-fast to Brighton. A few minutes later winner 37714 rolled in to take me to Goring By Sea.

I failed to make a tight connection for a Littlehampton bound service, as the services stop a fair way from the bridge, it didn’t matter as that would have only been a bonus and it was dud anyhow. I was waiting for the Portsmouth Harbour stoppers, which stop everywhere between Brighton & Portsmouth Harbour, excluding Hilsea. Dud 377154 rolled in to take me to my 2nd new station of the day in the shape of Bosham.

After visiting a local branch of the co-op which I spotted a minute or so walk from the station (along with a Fish & Chip shop and also a wine shop) to grab an early lunch, I toiled with the idea of bailing at Fishbourne to eat my fishy lunch, however RTT gave me no time saving over my original plan.

Dud 377463 was next in to take me to Barnham, where I wanted to alight to see what unit was on the Littlehampton/Bognor shuttles, mainly if it was required. It was dud 313217 so I put it to one side to await the arrival of fresh dud 377143 back from Brighton and now on a Portsmouth harbour stopper, taking me to Fishbourne. The station itself seemingly to be in the middle of housing, with a road being closed so it was peaceful, the platforms getting made wider, but there was nothing rushing through to allow me to get a picture.

Next up was the return of 377154, 4th time at riding making it a super-dud, take me to my final Southern branded station call on the West coastway, Durrington On Sea. Happy days indeed, as I waited for the next service heading towards Victoria, this was formed today of dud 377427, and I alighted at Worthing to see the other 377 would be to form 8 coaches to Victoria (front half coming from Littlehampton and forming a stopper to Worthing, with the rear half coming from Portsmouth and forming a semi-fast), the rear half was dud 377437.

I stayed on board and alighted at Hove, where a cross platform interchange got me onto winner 377111 for the short hop down to Brighton. Next up for me following trying to get through many people with many suitcases who had just come from a service from Victoria to get to P7 to board the Bexhill bound service, would normally be a 171 to Ashford, but as the line was closed between Bexhill & Ore, Southern were sensible and put a 377 on. Superdud 377462 was the unit which took me to Gylnde, the only new station I could get on the east coastway today (leaving the 2 limited service stops at Pevensey Bay & Doleham, plus Rye, Appledore & Ham Street).

Crossing over the platform after having a look around, nice old station buildings, with a pub nearby, 13:40 rolled around so I went back to the platform to await the 13:45 with around 20 other passengers, at 13:44 the train was spotted and went straight through without stopping… Another passenger quickly jumped onto the help-point and the powers that be arranged for the Bexhill – Victoria service to make a special stop. Can’t blame the driver as the services to/from Brighton were calling at Berwick & Glynde, where the ones to/from Victoria were not (those were calling additionally at the stations between Eastbourne & Bexhill), with the units changing at Bexhill, so a service from Brighton would form a Victoria bound service, and vice-versa.

Anyhow, after a 30 minute wait, double duds 377133/377121 rolled in with the special stop order, which took me to Lewes. Deciding to alight and jump onto the next Bexhill bound service from Brighton (the one which failed to stop), scored me winner 377455 taking me to Berwick. Across the platform and I was rewarded with winner 377130 back to Lewes. Putting me back on my original plan, all be it an hour late.

Next Seaford bound service was dud 377409, and was a Southease caller, the weather was nice so I decided to risk the zero connection (both services arrive at the same time to RTT), messing up the position of the bridge at Southease, but I was out, up and over that bridge and jumped on winner 313210. No hour wait at a station in the middle of nowhere, back to Lewes, to await the next Seaford bound service, this time formed of winner 313204, taking me to Bishopstone. A nice enough station, the old platform overgrown with the stairs blocked off by a welded metal gate, good sea views, but I wasn’t there for long before 313204 rolled back in to take me to Newhaven Harbour.

A few chains short of the ‘closed’ Newhaven Marina, easy enough it seems to walk the distance, but after finding the way out, I managed to walk towards the more popular Newhaven station (which has a bus link to the ferry), in Newhaven Town. 313210 rolled back in to give me an additional bonus of a trip down to Seaford, and back out to Brighton, meeting Techniquest on the service at Falmer.

With my plan done, all stations covered which I could do on the coastways, we headed towards a Victoria bound stopper, which was delayed due to train crew, idea of scoring Wivelsfield. The calling pattern changed to make it fast to Heywards Heath, with additional calls being made on the next London Bridge Thameslink, not knowing what to do with the Southern-only daysaves, we jumped onto duds (for me) 377521/377502, sitting in the former 1st class end for a quick chance to borrow Techni’s phone charger. We alighted at Wivelsfield with a short wait before dud 377130 arrived from Lewes with winner 377448 in tow, taking us to Gatwick Airport.

Next up was another shack attack chance, with winner 377626 leading dud 377623 towards Balcombe, which is a bit of an odd station, but never the less it was covered for both of us. The down platform seems to be shorter than the up platform (up can hold 12 cars, the down only 8), with the next service being a trio. Leading was winner 377407 with winner 377449 in the middle and last up was dud 377151 (making its first appearance in my book since July last year). Back to Gatwick which gave us the best options.

Quite a few delays, and a double 377/1 appearing on a Gatwick terminator, either a Gatwick Express service or a London Bridge to Gatwick Airport stopper. A required 166 rolled in (annoying), before deciding to jump on the Portsmouth/Littlehampton splitter, formed of duds 377410/377155, which was quite busy, only getting a seat after a couple stops and a walk. I said farewell to Techniquest as he alighted at Emsworth to await the next service back towards Brighton, and I carried on down into Portsmouth & Southsea.

A quick dash out of the station to grab food from a local Co-Op (my 10% NUS comes in handy), and back to the station with duds 444028 & 444045 rolling in to take me to Fratton. Like Porchester, I have previously used Fratton before, but before I started recording my trips, so it be a semi-new station for me. Having noted that it was a dud 377 on the next Brighton-Southampton service, I decided to stay on dud 450563 (only previously had on a Clapham – Waterloo run, so the extra 24 miles being good for this unit total) on a Southampton stopper to Southampton Central. Only gives me an extra 5 minutes in Southampton, but saves a 15-odd minute wait at Fareham.

Dud 158887 was on the Romsey rocket, taking me back to Romsey via Redbridge, where it terminated, the end of a busy day.

Anyhow Pictures:

Quite the spell of duds for you there!

Balcombe, I happened to notice as I flew by on Monday, has part of its platform under a low bridge. So obviously it's not used, similar to how Loughborough at least used to be (not sure if they've changed that yet).

Balcombe has the old platform from when it used to be double track all the way to Seaford. I would say the whole platform is used when a 377 calls there.

Are you not confusing the low bridge with another station which you flew through (as all the trains bar a couple early morning peak specials) call at Balcombe?

I was talking about the short platform thing at Balcombe, which is on the Brighton Main Line. Bishopstone is on the Seaford branch, which is the only one I can think of which has a former platform still on the branch.

I seem to recall a 377/3 takes up most of the room on the platform at Bishopstone, this is based on a 2008 adventure so what a 4-car 377 is like there I have no idea.

Those Southern 313s look very odd... Their livery doesn't work at all on older stock (they ruined their 455s) but looks great on the Electrostars.

I never realised it was so simple to build a platform either - looks like a fairly simple construction!

Great read and pics :)

At 09:02 this morning I was sitting on 378220 at Willesden Junction Platform 1 bound for Stratford. PSUL movement success at the 2nd attempt :)

The 313/2s are nice enough units for the job they do, mainly stoppers on the coastways, 2+2 seating to allow more standing room when required.

Another awkward bit of track bites the dust - no doubt you will enlighten us on the rest of the day's travel in due course....

If Kite159 can drag himself away from a day's travels that is! ;) Making me outrageously jealous, but in the same breath nostalgic for the days when I would just pop down to London when I fancied it on a day off. Popping down, in this case, consisted of a 20 minutes or so bus ride into town, followed by around 3 hours of HST haulage from Swansea to London Paddington. Memories...

I did that PSUL track years ago, back when 313/1s ruled the roost and there was no sign of new trains whatsoever (I'm going to guess this was 2005), at silly o'clock going into Willesden Junction Low Level. Can't believe how long ago this was!
