Fingers crossed the TM is all fine and well :)

I did an all-nighter at Temple Meads once in summer 2004, that was a rather dull experience. Even with proper HSTs coming in and out from St Phillips Marsh!

Railtours look pretty interesting, mostly due to the 66 haulage ;)

Had a good read of your last few reports, thanks for posting :) the photos certainly add to it

12th April – Going nowhere fast on the Bakerloo

Usual case with a Sunday London trip, I start from Andover to avoid the alternating Sunday 2 hourly service from Grateley, nice little trip and a hop onto 159012 to do the honours, as it was the final Sunday the £15 special offer fares were available I decided to treat myself for a FC travel card (no particular reason). Changing at Woking as we overtook what appeared to be a trio of 450s around the Farnborough area (line to Alton was closed so the usual splitting service wasn’t splitting/joining at Woking). Leading the trio was dud 450102 with winners 450111 & 450112 behind, taking a standard class seat until Surbiton where it was a quick shift to the First Class section.

Someone else was using the opposite table, who got caught out by the guard and had to pay the £5 upgrade (probably was hoping not to get checked as he was busy watching something on his tablet device), anyhow Clapham was soon reached, with a hop over to P10 with dud 455702 taking me to Vauxhall, the idea of getting the Victoria line up towards Euston to do some 350 hunting. Brief change of plan when I saw winner 450034 arriving with dud 450084 in tow, which I took back to Clapham Junction. Winner 455712 & dud 455853 took me back to Vauxhall where I headed up the Victoria line to Euston. Cutting it a tad tight (3 minutes from the Victoria line platform to get onto the service, but I made it).

First experience of a 350 First Class area, and it’s pretty much like the First Class area on a 450 (although I don’t really know what else it would have been as the 350 & 450 are pretty much the same train [happy to be corrected]), leading was winner 350262 with dud 350123 on the rear. To Harrow & Wealdstone, arriving into P3, the fast down platform, with a quick hop across the gate to jump onto winner 378219 to take me down to my first new station of the day, the island platform at South Kenton. If it wasn’t an island platform I would have missed dud 378217 which took me back up overshooting Harrow to Headstone Lane, with a brief wait before dud 378232 took me down to Harrow.

Next London Midland service was dud, and it was a triple, so to P4, and dud 350375 was leading dud 350118 and winner 350116, so it was back to Euston. Walking across to Euston Square to get onto a circle line service to Paddington (having to wait 10 minutes due to just missing a prior service) with the idea of seeing which 165/166s were floating around (with an aim to try and get that bay platform at Hayes), sadly a rather dead Paddington (Reading closed so only 2 HST services an hour via Banbury, plus the usual Heathrow Express/Connects), with the Hayes services cancelled, so after a quick visit to the 1st class lounge (sadly no food available, only cans of soft-drink), I was of the station, all the Heathrow Connect 360s have been covered and are standard class only.

Bakerloo to Marylebone next up, with the metropolitan line being closed Chiltern were running an improved service to Harrow on the Hill, every 20 minutes, plus the usual services up the main-line. Saw a required 168 in the station, but first call was something like Bicester, and the other departures in the station which I could catch were all duds, so not wanting to waste more time, it was back to the Bakerloo to Baker Street and Circle line to Euston Square, with a fast walk to get to Euston, with another close shave.

Dud 350126 was leading winner 350117, so out to Harrow (although I had jumped on before grabbing the numbers so an extra bonus one of the units were required), back to normal service as it arrived into P5, with the next southbound service due in 5 minutes (seems to alternate between South bound first and northbound first) so across to P6. The train was spotted in the distance, and looked to be in the fast up, and arrived into the fast up P4, the PIS being complete and utter useless and not announcing the platform change whatever (few angry passengers who couldn’t be quick to get across the footbridge to P4). I made it with time to spare and was rewarded with a trio of winners, 350125, 350264 & 350232, happy days. So back to Euston (again), where a quick interchange to the Victoria line took me the 37 chain journey to Kings Cross St Pancras.

I decided to try Kings Cross first, shocked to see that the gateline at the main-platforms end was shut, both sides of it, Virgin East Coast putting pressure on to stop fare dodgers? But where the main-line gates were closed, the suburban gateline was wide open! I had RTT up telling me the next few departures to Finsbury, and for the next 30 minutes were all duds, so out of Kings Cross and to St Pancras low-level to see what Thameslink units were floating around. East Midland Trains had gone belly up, all services cancelled from St Pancras, so the northbound platform was quite busy. Pair of dud 377s were up first, so I gave them a miss, and thankfully I did as my last 319/3 still with Thameslink decided to show up, 319385, so a quick hop down to Farringdon was on the cards.

Across the footbridge at Farringdon when a pair of 387s as I spotted the first was a required unit, so quick dash and 387110 was in the book, along with dud 387116, seems easier to try and get the 387s when they are with Thameslink before they move across to GW land. Nothing else moving, a pair of dud 319s were heading south so back to Kings Cross to see what had arrived, and I was in luck, first departure was winner 317342 with the next departure 20 minutes later being a required 365, so out to Finsbury Park, no southbound services for 10 or so minutes so down to the Victoria line back to Kings Cross to score 365525 on a run to Finsbury. I had noticed another required 365 floating around Kings Cross, but this time the southbound service was running a few minutes late, so I managed to jump on board, no time to check the unit numbers. The FC area on a 365 is rather nice by the way.

At Kings Cross I had time to check the numbers, and a bonus, winner 365515 was leading dud 365502, always good to get a required 365 as the numbers required reduce. Anyways, to the set I had previously identified as being required, winner 365515 was leading dud 365502, so back out to Finsbury Park, and back to Kings Cross St Pancras on the Victoria line (again another 15 minute gap), all the time keeping an eye on the 313s to see if 313030 would be kind enough to put in a visit. Next Finsbury services were duds, so back to St Pancras!

Good choice, East Midland Trains was still not running, and a late running dud 377 set (seriously, my luck with the Thameslink 377s isn’t the best at the moment) had taken a lot of the passengers before double winners 387106 & 387120 showed up to take me to West Hampstead Thameslink. FC section on the 387s, like the 377/6 & 377/7s, is exactly the same, just antimacassars. Taking me back down to St Pancras was a pair of duds, 377212 & 377508. Deciding to call it a day and head back to Euston with the aim of doing some shack attacking on the Watford DC line. Northern line this time back to Euston, and another close shave saw me onto winner 350241 out to Harrow, where I purchased my BZ6 to Watford ticket. First call of duty was a run up the Overground line, this time to Hatch End on dud 378232. Quick dash across the platforms saw me onto winner 378224 back to Harrow. Next northbound service was due and was winner 378226, so to Bushey. First time using the Overground side, I have previously used P5/P6 on 321 runs.

Southbound 350s were both duds so back to P2 with dud 378232 making a reappearance to Carpenders Park with dud 378217 going back north to Watford Junction. Although I somehow missed a required 378 (218), which managed to avoid me for the rest of the day, must have gone out of service at Euston and replaced with another 378. Anyhow, LM service southbound was dud, so across to P10 to jump onto dud 377704 down to Harrow. With the stations north of Harrow cleared, I was happy as I had the Bakerloo line to help me with the required stations between Queens Park & Harrow, or so I through. As the Bakerloo twitter account put it “Severe delays on the entire line, due to an earlier faulty train at Lambeth North.”, and with delays the services are cut back to the central part of the Bakerloo (so hardly anything north of Queens Park). 15-odd minutes later, a Bakerloo service arrived into the station, which took me down to North Wembley with winner 378221 arriving a few minutes later to take me down to Stonebridge Park, where I hit some more delays.

A Bakerloo line service rolled out onto the line soon after the 378 had departed, where the driver was saying that he was being kept back to the scheduled departure time in 15 minutes time, so I was going nowhere fast, northbound 378 was dud. Eventually the service got going down to Harlesden, RTT was suggesting that 218 should be due northbound, so I gave the southbound dud a miss, only for the northbound to also be dud, 218 must have gone out of service at Euston and another unit replace it. Bugger, with another wait before a Bakerloo line service took me to Willesden Junction, not the first time using this station, but first time since I started recording details of my trips. Next up with dud 378219 with a station jump to Kilburn High Road, with a short connection with 378224 back to Kensal Green my final station on the Overground side of the Watford DC line, just need a few additional Bakerloo stations to clear that line, although that will probably wait for a day with rubbish weather!

A Bakerloo set took me back to Willesden Junction where I managed to find the high level island platform, and was rewarded with winner 378234 to Kensal Rise, winner 378255 back to Willesden junction where I spotted required 378220 pulling in so back to Kensal Rise. Checking RTT saw the next service was heading down to Clapham which would nicely connect up with the Basingstoke semi-fast for potential of required 450s. Dud 378222 was on duty to take me down to Clapham where we sat outside for a few minutes as the Southern services was using P1 on this day, so into the platform, and a quick dash to P9. The Basingstoke semi-fast (Fort Wimbledon & Surbiton before Woking) was short formed this evening, but was winner 450072, so staying in the FC section until Surbiton (where a lot of passengers alight) I moved back to SC for the remainder of the journey, the 159s on the Salisbury service scream pass us, and arrival into Woking was on time, allowing me time to make the 4 minute connection with the same pair of 159s which screamed passed, formed of 159021 & 159004, to take me back to Andover.

A productive day with several winners, and the Watford DC line cleared, happy days, anyways some pictures:

Why do you feel the need to change the indication of winner shacks, just out of curiosity? It seems to work just fine, unless I'm missing something.

Seems like a waste of FC travel opportunities to do 378s! Nevertheless, congrats on clearing the Watford DC line shacks, your book must be getting quite full in certain places these days!

18th April – Derbyshire Wayfarer

The day began with a walk to catch the 5:59 service, which connected up with the 7:10 departure from Reading to Birmingham which I was booked on, however when walking down the road and seeing a unit pulling in got me into a run, had SWT decided to bring the departure time forward to 5:56 as they sometimes do? Jumping on board 159012/159007 (a double unit at this time of the morning?), I looked up to see that it wasn’t the 5:59, but the 5:27 which I normally catch running 28 minutes late! Something had happened around Laverstock as the 5:47 departure from Basingstoke was stuck behind it. To try and pull back some lost time it ran fast from Andover to Basingstoke and was due to run non-stop to Waterloo (which in all fairness it managed to get back 18 of those minutes).

I had tickets to Reading with the idea of seeing which FGW 165 would make an appearance on the shuttle to Reading and link up with the XC Manchester service, with the late running XC service behind, arriving into Basingstoke 47 minutes late (gained a few minutes back from a fast reversal at Reading, but looking at RTT lost more time to Oxford, and terminated at Birmingham 57 minutes late. Although with 2 XC services heading to Manchester arriving within a few minutes of each other at the likes of Oxford, Banbury & Leamington Spa meant the unit I was on was rather quiet. Anyhow, the 5:47 was a dud 221, so I turned over to see which 165 had rolled in to form the service to Reading and that was also a dud, so back to the original plan to get onto the XC I was booked on for the long trip to New Street.

The unit in question was dud 220003, and a nice trip to New Street arriving a couple minutes down, the service only really getting busy after International. Quick turnaround as I attempted to find P12, and getting confused and ending up on P10/P11, and eventually found P12 just as the Edinburgh bound dud 221138 rolled in, taking my nice table seat for the run to Derby. Quick look at what units were around the station to make my first winning move of the day, a 156 was on a Derby-Crewe run which was dud, a 153 was on a Matlock run, which was also dud, a winner 170 arrived but sadly ran fast to Nottingham (should have bailed at Burton and waited the 10 minutes for that service to catch up), but the next Birmingham bound service was winner 170117 so I jumped on for the run down to Burton On Trent my first new station of the day.

However it is a station where the Birmingham bound services arrive a couple minutes after a Derby bound service had departed, so I had a 25 minute wait. Seemed that the town centre was a fair walk away, so decided to take a seat in the nice little area to await the arrival of the next 170 to Derby, and it was winner 170105. Back at Derby and the next service which I could catch was winner 222016 which I took for the 24 odd miles to my 2nd new station of the day at Chesterfield, with a 20 minute wait for the next service (seems XC stop 1 train an hour [South West to North] at Chesterfield, the other [Reading to North] running fast), like Burton the town centre seems to be a fair walk from the station, so after 15 minutes I was back onto the station, noting the subway as the next two departures were within a couple minutes of each other so if one was dud I would make a quick dash to P1 to see what was heading north. The platform dash wasn’t required as heading south was winner 222005 so it was back to Derby for a fast turnaround to jump onto winner 222018 back north, knowing that Chesterfield would be another wait I stayed on until Sheffield.

An eye on departures saw a late running Norwich service, which was formed of dud 158864 with winner 158863 behind, so back to Chesterfield where due to late running it was routed into the lesser used platform 3, I guess the signallers wanted it onto the slow tracks as soon as possible as 222016 was making its way back south. Next service southbound was a XC, and was winner 220023, so happy days. Into Derby to see the next Crewe service being formed of a double dog-box, leading was required 153302 with dud 153310 [last had nearly a year ago on the same service] which took me to the first call at Tutbury & Hatton. Nice little platforms at Tutbury, with a factory producing coffee by the side (lovely coffee smell), pretty soon dud 153374 rolled in to take me to Derby, passing the lesser used station at Peartree, a task for another day to try and clear that station which will probably involve a bus (or a bike) to avoid a near 2 hour wait for the next service which calls there.

Back at Derby, my eyes was on the next northbound service, formed of winner 222012 taking me to Sheffield, with an eye on catching the Hope Valley stopper, which was a wise choice as the next service from Chesterfield was a delayed Northern Leeds service, which we passed heading out of Sheffield, heading over to platform 2C (new platform and tiny new bit of track), to await the probable Pacer. The NRDMUG was being kind and didn’t throw up a 142, but instead winner 150269 which I took to Bamford, another new station for me. Nice to get some 150 tunnel thrash before a sudden brake to arrive at Grindleford near the western end of Totley tunnel. Bamford was reached with a quick hop over the bridge, sadly the road is busy so I couldn’t grab a picture of the 150 departing west along a beautiful line. I didn’t have long to wait before dud 142057 popped up to take me back to Sheffield.

I decided it was time for a quick shack attack, the next Norwich train was due to call at Dronfield, formed of dud 158858 leading winner 158857, going the short near 7 mile distance to Dronfield where I had around 10 minutes to fester before the next northbound service, formed of winner 158909, a quick idea had formed of trying to score Dore & Totley, but I had completely misread the timings (missing the Nottingham – Leeds train up with the Leeds – Nottingham) so my connection was in doubt but thankfully for whatever reason the Adwick to Manchester service was delayed, so I quickly jumped onto winner 142001 and eventually got moving to Dore & Totley and a few minutes later duds 158788/158846 arrived to take me back to Sheffield.

Nothing much was moving south which was required, so it was a quick jump onto dud 222013 to Chesterfield, arriving a couple minutes late so the northbound service had already departed, next southbound was dud 220032 which I took to Derby with an idea of getting on a 170 to score Long Eaton (giving me two options back to Derby), however that 170 turned out to be dud, but required 220028 rolled in so deciding that Long Eaton could wait for another day took me back to Chesterfield. Next service I had to catch and was dud 221138 heading back to Derby, full of football fans, and Derby was full of police. Next service was a booked XC which ran fast to Birmingham, so my options was limited, so after grabbing a quick meal-deal from the WH Smiths (Derby, another station a fair walk from the town centre), I was back onto the station to await the Southampton bound service from Newcastle. Winner 220030 arrived (always a bonus to get a required unit on a booked service).

Going via Warwick (extension of a Reading service) seems to be quicker than via Coventry, although this particular service seems to have long dwell times [or just arrived early], 4 minutes at Leamington, 4 minutes at Banbury, 6 minutes at Oxford, 10 minutes at Reading for the reversal, deciding to stay on board (wise call as the service from Manchester was running late and would have meant an hour 20 minute wait at Basingstoke), although this did mean a 25-odd minute wait at Basingstoke, originally planned to use this time to grab a pizza from the pizza place, but I had food already, so back to my book, before 159004 arrived to take me back to Grateley.

Anyhow, pictures:

19th April – Overground shack attacks

With clearance of the Watford DC line last weekend, my attention turned to the remainer of the overground network, checking for any enginnering works saw that the only part which was closed was from South Tottenham to Barking (with the 3 stations required along that part cleared on the Friday evening before the forum meal) so with my target of clearing my remaining 21 overground shacks (and a rough idea of trying to clear the remaining stations on the Thameslink Sutton loop), I set up to Andover to join up with 159003 & 159105 to do something unusual and go straight into Waterloo.

First stop was to clear South Bermondsey, a station I couldn’t clear on Good Friday due to football, so it was to London Bridge on the Jubilee line I went, and upto the low level station, beating back the urge to score some winning 377s on a Gatwick service, and was rewarded with winner 455820 out the short way to South Bermondsey, a nice island platform, and back to the Bridge on dud 455814. Down to the underground and the Jubilee (I love the sound of sitting in the leading car and hearing it accelerate) to Baker Street, with a Bakerloo service to Marylebone. With the FA Cup being on, meaning more services were calling heading south, the first service being required 165016, and spotting another required 165 which RTT was suggesting would form another Wembley stopper (Aylesbury via High Wycombe), I decided to jump onto the next southbound service to link up. Dud 165038 took me back to Marylebone. Couple required 168/0s spotted, but there was a unit swap and the one heading towards Aylesbury was dud, and with no more required units which I could catch hanging around, I headed to the Bakerloo line.

Paddington was my next port of call, next Reading stopper was formed of winners 165108 & 166214 (214 only being 2 car due to the centre car suffering damage), which I decided to take to a new station at Southall, the West Coast Railway company sidings is full of old coaches and personally is a bit of a mess, and very quiet with the ban. Next Paddington service was duds 165125/165103 which I took back to Ealing Broadway, and crossing over to the district line. A D-stock train was waiting with only one door per coach open, before all the doors open and it was on its way to Turnham Green, a brief wait before the next Richmond bound service took me to Kew Gardens. Station appears to be hard to get from one platform to another, having to pass one set of barriers, go outside and underneath the tracks via a subway and through another set of barriers to get to the northbound side, by which time a district line service had already departed.

Dud 378226 took me up to Gunnersbury where I had a 20 minute wait for the next overground service, so making use of the time visited a Subway on the street outside before returning to the station to catch dud 378216 to South Acton. 10 minute wait there gave me an idea, instead of doing Thameslink, how about doing the remaining stations on the Shenfield metro as that would be easier to get to once in Stratford. My train of through was broken with the arrival of winner 378230 to take me the next big leap to Brondesbury Park with another wait before dud 378213 took me to Brondesbury. 10 or so minutes later another dud in the shape of 378234 took me to Hampstead Heath with 378210 taking me back one stop to Finchley Road & Frognal. Next up was dud 378224 to Kentish Town West and 378226 back to Gospel Oak. The idea was to get onto the 172 towards South Tottenham, but when I saw required 378223 pull in I jumped on for the 47 chain hop back to Kentish Town West before winner 378256 back to Gospel Oak.

172002 took me to Crouch Hill where a quick hop over the road bridge to the other platform saw 172007 doing the honours back to Upper Holloway, the old footbridge rusting away and fenced off. 172003 took me back to Crouch Hill and 172005 back to Gospel Oak, the stations on Goblin complete, quick dive to get winner 378228 boarding after the buzzer sounded to take me to the island platform of Caledonian Road & Barnsbury, with dud 378223 back to Camden Road. 10 minute wait as I had missed the next service to Stratford, before 378220 arrived to take me to Hackney Central, with another doubleback from 378219 to Dalston Kingsland, one more station on the NLL to go!

Dud 378226 did the honours to Hackney Wick, last used by me a good few years ago (2008 time), for a Radiohead concert in Victoria Park, with 378256 completing the line to get me to Stratford. BZ6 to Brentwood ticket in hand as Brentwood is outside the travelcard zones, and the first service out east was a Southend bound semi-fast, formed of winner 321316, first port of call was the loo. To Brentwood, with winners 315856 & 315833 taking me back to Harold Wood. Few minutes waiting later and 321348 was coming back from Southend which took me to the island platform at Gidea Park. A late running Norwich 90 delayed the arrival of the stopper (only 2 tracks of the Great Eastern open today), although my luck ran out with duds 315823/315850 to Illford.

Doubling back to Seven Kings on winner 315803 & dud 315854 was a bit of a mistake as Seven Kings is a station where the services pass each other, giving me a 15 minute wait before dud 315819 arrived with winner 315815 in tow to take me to my final station on the soon to be TFL-Rail service at Manor Park. Another brief wait and dud pair of 315s out west saw me onto dud 315827 leading winner 315813 back to Stratford. 5 new 315s ticked off which is always a bonus. To the Jubilee line where my remaining stations on the ELL were waiting, so it was a nice run to Canada Water. First service was a dud 378 to New Cross, with dud 378147 behind taking me to Surrey Quays (heading to Clapham), with 378137 doing the honour to New Cross Gate, the massive footbridge present. Winner (and final 378/1) 378153 took me to Brockley, and southern 455810 to Honor Oak Park.

At Honor Oak Park I noticed the arrival of required 455806 heading towards London Bridge so I jumped on that back to Brockley, a southeastern line crossing over near the station. Dud 378138 took me to my final ELL station in the shape of Forest Hill. Deciding to try and do the Thameslink loop saw me on winner 455812 to Sutton, before deciding against the loop as I had 2 remaining stations on the WLL to do to complete the set. Dud 377623 leading winner 377621 arrived to take me on a stopping service to Clapham. Across the platforms to get onto dud 378213 to Shepherds Bush, with 378255 doing the honours back to my final LOROL station of Imperial Wharf.

A large smile on my face as all stations covered on the current network (although will probably see me on the extended network come May the 31st to cover the stations between Hackney Downs & Cheshunt (plus the few stations on the Chingford branch). Back to Clapham J on a late running 377704, with a brief fester before the Alton/Basingstoke semi-fast arrived, formed of dud 450035 leading winner 450003, with my number of required 450s dropping, always a bonus to score one. Out to Woking and across the footbridge with the 159 trio which roared past us at Surbiton, with 159020 leading 159105 & 159003, another weekend featuring the same 159 on the return journey as it was on the outward trip.

With this weekend and last weekend, I only need 3 more 378/2s, so I can see some more festering around Willesden Junction to see if they show up to clear them.

Anyhow a couple pictures:
A delayed 90013 on a service from Norwich at Gidea Park

I was smiling when 378153 arrived to take me to Brockley

Re sightings at Derby, you wouldn't have seen a Buxton train there. More likely the 153 would have been on a Crewe train and the 156 on a Matlock.

Some good reads there and very productive days out as usual! I have to be honest... You seem so busy and I find it very difficult to keep up ;) Great pictures by the way!

Most likely. Although the 156s have been making their way to Crewe more frequently of late!

Doh with mixing Buxton & Matlock up.

It was a 156 on the Crewe service, and a single (and cosy on departing Derby) 153 heading to Matlock.

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/C80419/2015/04/18/advanced was the 156
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/C80697/2015/04/18/advanced was the 153

I did spot a 158 on a Matlock run later in the evening when waiting for the Southampton bound XC, so at least EMT strengthened a busy service

When you mentioned Buxton, I was wondering if the campaigning to re-open route between Matlock and Buxton had been secretly successful !!!

As usual, some excellent reads! Outrageously busy, and some long days involved but high levels of productivity!

*Starting to get worried Kite159 will have a fuller book than me soon*

21st & 22nd April – A couple days in FGW land

It begins with 159006, working the 9:59 departure from Grateley to Waterloo, where I alighted at Basingstoke. 150001 was on the Basingstoke – Reading shuttle so I decided to see if I would get lucky as harry with a required voyager...

...Nope, 221126, although adding to its previous total of 5 miles from a Piccadilly to Stockport run, nice relaxing trip to Reading, where I swapped tickets from a Bedwyn special to the Thames branches rover, aim of today was to clear the shacks along the main-line, as well as unit hunting of 165/166/43s, so it begins with the first HST, leading was required 43180 with dud 43088 leading up the rear, into the London station where a certain Peruvian Bear was named after, however it didn’t go all clean running as signalling around Slough was playing up, meaning a run at caution through the station, and a 15-odd minute delay into Paddington. The next couple Turbo services were duds, but I had my eye on a service which arrived just before us.

After lunch from Sainsburys I was back on the platform (annoyingly my Thames branch rover decided not to work any barriers at Paddington), winners 43022 & 43023 were running on a Bristol bound service (I think, could have been a South Wales), which took me back to Reading where only a few minutes later, winners 43131 & 43086 took me back to Paddington, no issues around Slough so it was a good high speed run. Another quick check around spotted 43018 leading dud 43098 on another outward service, so back to Reading again.

Turning my eye over to the relief lines scored me 166221 on a quick hop to Twyford (mainly to note what was running on the Henley branch, it was a dud), noting that required 207 was due out of Reading on the next stopper, so I hung around Twyford and scored 166207 to Maidenhead, another branch line dud, and dud 165105 back to Twyford (jumped on without checking unit number), with winner 166206 at Twyford deciding to stay on board to my first new station at Iver. 20 minute wait (Oxford – Paddington stoppers stop at Iver/Langley, where the Reading – Paddington stoppers call at Burnham/Taplow), before dud 165102 took me the short hop to Langley, with dud 165129 leading winner 166220 to Hayes & Harlington.

Quick hop across the platforms to get on the return of 166207 to West Drayton, with a dash across the platform to get rewarded with dud 166218 leading winner 165126, was getting near the time when a lot of the stoppers would be double units, so double the chance of winners, this duo took me back to Hayes and Harlington, where I alighted to await 360201 to take me to Hanwell, served pretty much only by Heathrow Connect, so half-hourly service, 360202 arrived to take me back to Hayes & Harlington. Across the platform with winner 165123 leading dud 165104 to Ealing Broadway, and a quick hop to score 360201 (again) to my final main-line station within the zones at West Ealing, slightly better than Hanwell as it served by the Greenford services as well. The new bay platform appears to be forming when the Greenford services terminate there when Crossrail opens.

I had the option of doing a quick hop up the branch line if the London service was dud, but that wasn’t required as it was winner 165122 taking me to Ealing Broadway with winner 165124 leading dud 165136 taking me to Paddington. Swapping tickets as it was time for some high-speed 332 action, oh yes I was doing Heathrow Express, just to tick it into the “done” box, I was surprised how busy the service was in parts, but the front coach was pretty much empty on 332012 & 332013, one of the worst trains to get the numbers from (on the curved part of the front, with coach numbers bearing little to the set number).

15 minutes later and it had arrived underground at Heathrow Terminals 123, I was after my last 360/2, and would luck have it (well considering it lives underground doing T123-T4 transfers), 360205 arrived, all nice inside with 2+2 seating, for the short journey to T4, and back out to T123. Next T5 service was 360202 which I took, jumping across platforms to score dud 332005 and winner 332001 back out to T123. Next T5 service was due shortly and was formed of winners 332004 & 332009, this is when I should have got around to getting the Piccadilly line back to T123 and caught the next T5 service, as due to the Connect services using one platform, the Express services were departing T5 with the next one arriving, so no quick interchange. Back out on 332009/332004, where the next T5 was the return of 012/013 I decided enough was enough and headed out into the daylight on 360201.

New track was scored in the shape of the new flyover down to the up relief, and changing at Hayes & Harlington, as I wanted to cover my last 2 stations, duds 165110/165127 did the honours to taking me to the island platform at Burnham. Appeared to be some sort of signalling issues as all the down HSTs were running in the relief line around that area, so some good noises, before dud 165130 arrived with winner 166208 in tow to my final new station at Taplow. Across the footbridge and winners 165117 & 166204 took me to Slough.

Some festering, to see what was going to be on the fast, before seeing a pair of required units, 165137 & 165121 arrive to take me to Maidenhead, where plans to score a train departing from P1 was axed when winner 43024 (and dud 43097) arrived onto P3, to take me back to Reading. Brief moment of rest to see what was happening on the western side (anything of interest on the Newbury/Basingstokes) before winners 43140 & 43132 took me back to Paddington, spotting the sleeper train was on P1, I alighted and headed to the concourse to see the dreaded word “Cancelled”

The sleeper had been cancelled due to the train manager being taken ill, so after a quick bite to eat, we were told to board the 23:30 Cardiff service to Bristol, where the sleeper would meet us there, it was being delayed due to waiting for 23:45 (and again at Reading to await the time the sleeper would normally depart) with the sleeper stock following us. Dud 43139 was leading unexpected winner 43126, taking a table seat, passengers for Reading were asked to leave the train and board the service heading to Oxford as it “would get them to Reading quicker”, and so it would as only the relief lines were open once the HST departed.

Emptied out at Reading by passengers who decided they would prefer a nice HST to a 166, and other sleeper passengers boarded for a slow trip to Bristol Temple Meads, watching all the various works taking place along the line, and arrival into Temple Meads was at 02:10, and god that station is massive when empty. At around 02:25, Pride of Carlisle, 57303 arrived, finding my berth (nice little solo berth in the middle of the coach), and settled down after checking in for a night’s kip.

I must have slept, I can remember waking up a few times, but a much better night than in September when I did the Edinburgh service, and at 07:52 the sleeper arrived into Penzance, and I was up and about, after taking a few pictures, I noticed a required 221 sitting on the platform to form a Glasgow Central bound service (a service which takes just under 12 hours), so after visiting the little cafe to grab breakfast (after foolishly turning down food on the sleeper), I was back onto the station, purchasing a day return to St Erth, and boarded 221132.

20 odd minutes at St Erth, time used up by visiting a local garage for a newspaper, and enjoying the beautiful weather. Winner 43188 arrived with dud 43189 in tow from Plymouth, so back to Penzance, my service was booked to be the 09:40 departure (heading to Manchester), so I had 25 minutes to kill, so I headed to Tesco to get some supplies. Back into Penzance I boarded dud 220009, first time in XC 1st class (advance 1st fare was £1 more than a standard class advance, which was a couple quid cheaper than a single fare to Plymouth). No catering of any kind, down this end of the XC network. After a 20 minute wait at Plymouth (and spotting a required XC HST arrive), 220009 set off, transferring to standard class, and alighting at Newton Abbot.

Winner 153368 with dud 153318 in tow arrived around the same time, so I took them for a quick stop to Teignmouth, and back to Newton Abbot on winner 220029. Newton Abbot, a station quite far away from the town centre shops and had the little cafe selling sandwiches & drinks for mega money. A few minutes later (after spotting 2 FGW power-cars joined up end-on-end on P3), winner powercars 43304 & 43384 arrived for a trip along the Dawlish coast line to Exeter St Davies.

Spotted a required 150/1 heading to Cardiff was on my radar, but that slip down when I spotted required 150246 heading to Barnstaple, so a chance to score a new shack along this line (with many shacks, some of which see a very limited service), and my first request stop, Morchard Road, a station seemingly to be in the middle of nowhere, some houses next to a busy road (and car dealership). 20 minutes later dud 150234 arrived to take me down to Exeter St Davies, joining up with a dud 143 for its trip to Exmouth, so I had a quick visit to WH Smiths to score me some lunch, and back onto the platform.

Next service was heading to Paignton, and was the school special, leading was 143618 with 143612 and 150244 joining at St Davies. I was only staying on for the short hop down to Exeter St Thomas, where a quick hop under the bridge to the other platform, with dud 150124 taking me back to Exeter St Davies. The next XC service heading north I knew was going to be a winner (as I had spotted it earlier) and it would be a good time to make a dash to Tiverton Parkway as the return service was only 15 minutes of waiting rather than 45 minutes. Winner 220031 did the honours.

Now Tiverton Parkway, seemingly very far away from Tiverton itself, and features a booking office, a little cafe, a modest car-park, a busy road, and a massive bridge. I had passed another XC HST heading to Plymouth, so worked out a rough plan, to grab it from Newton Abbot to Exeter before a SWT home. Pretty soon dud 221125 arrived to take me to St Davies (FGW HST behind was running late and was dud, so no loss), dud 150124 took me to Dawlish Warren which is horrible station to get from platform to platform, exiting the station, down a road to go under a bridge and up another road to get to the Exeter bound platform.

The school special had return, and was scheduled to wait on the loop for a HST to pass, 150244/143612/143618, taking me the just under 2 mile trip to Starcross, beautiful station on the edge of the river, the weather today was beautiful. Anyhow, I didn’t have to wait long before a busy dud 150106 took me to Newton Abbot, where I had a 25 minute wait for the XC HST (noticing that another HST with 2 dud power-cars had already passed me in Exeter, so I knew I would get at least 1 more winner, as my previous total was 3). And the odds (1/6) were against me as dud 43303 was leading winner 43285, so it was time to board for a nice enjoyable trip up the coast to Exeter. I had a 2 minute connection with a Waterloo bound service, and it was right down P1.

Only a single unit, which was a bit odd (last year when I did some Bedwyn round trips, this service was normally a double, with the rear detaching at Salisbury), nice little run back up to Grateley, little wait at Tilsbury station for a delayed Exeter bound service to enter the loop, but arrival was pretty much bang on time. And so it ends with 159006...

Iver, a station located on a housing estate, hidden behind an overgrown fence, you wouldn’t know it was there if you were looking for it

Unknown HSTs passing Burnham & Taplow station, signalling problems making them run in the reliefs, they will be missed when the IEPs take over

Another great read and another couple of productive days. Looks like the weather was great for your second day. I love stations in the middle of nowhere like Morchard Road, there's a certain charm to them :)

25th April – A Day on the coastways

Southern Daysave time again, and where I was pondering if I should go all the way to the northern end of the network with the news of a required London Midland 153 on the Marston Vale, if the 150 was required then I would have gone up north, but instead stayed to the west & east coastway lines. The day began with a drive, slightly longer than normal due to my usual road being closed, but I reached Romsey in good time, to get across the subway a good few minutes before 158958 rolled in, almost getting close to double-super dud status (5th time at riding) and into Southampton Central.

Time to grab a newspaper from the little WH Smiths (They want how much for a meal deal! (£4.59)) Across the island platform as winner 377104 rolled in. Few minutes later it set off heading towards Victoria (that be London, probably would get stuck if it wanted to get to Manchester, although the /2s+/7s could probably do it), first new shack of the day was scored with Swanwick, gets one of the 6 out of the way on that part of the line, a job for a spare day on a FOSS rover I think. Nice little station be Swanwick, and before long dud 377204 arrived to take me to Havant. Quite a busy station with the main-line being closed all the long-distance SWTs were being diverted via the Portsmouth Direct Line. It wasn’t long before my first new 313/2 decided to show itself, working a Portsmouth & Southsea to Littlehampton stopper service, 313211 which I took for the massive distance (54 chains!) to Warblington.

You can see Havant station from Warblington, the line is rather straight, but I didn’t have long to wait (10 minutes) before the next Portsmouth & Southsea bound service, formed of winner 313215. Across to the other platform to await the next Southern service, a SWT service arrived with the guard announcing “if you hold tickets marked Southern only or “Via Barnham” they are not valid on this train”, must get some passengers boarding heading to London trying to blah with the cheaper Southern-only fares. Anyhow next service was dud 377423 to Chichester, as I was looking at RTT for 313/2 movements and saw another Portsmouth & Southsea service would leave Littlehampton around the same time as 211 would have arrived, and gave me a chance to cross off another station between Havant & Chichester (which majority are one train an hour). Sadly it was no 313 action, and dud 377135 arrived, although the run to Nutbourne gave it an extra few miles from Clapham – Victoria run I’ve previously had with this unit.

Another small station with a level crossing, so across to the other platform to await the return of 313215 to take me to Barnham, as I wanted to see what was on the Littlehampton (Barnham) – Bognor service, and it was 313211 from earlier (so my thinking is that a train from Portsmouth runs into Littlehampton and forms the next Bognor train, runs to Bognor, goes back to Barnham, goes into Bognor before returning to Littlehampton to form the next Portsmouth service, although I haven’t checked with RTT to see if this works out). Next stop was on dud 377121, the trains getting quite busy now with the football, so I bailed at Shoreham by Sea, with the aim of trying to clear the West Worthing – Brighton stoppers, 10 stations quite close to each other. RTT was my friend in working out which way would be best, so it was onto winner 313205 for the short hop to Lancing. Dud 313209 providing the wheels to Fishersgate, before dud 313209 rolled in to take me back west to Southwick.

Next up was busy (standing room only) winner 377427 taking me to Hove, the idea of trying to clear Aldrington with the new West Worthing stopper. However that plan changed when winner 377110 arrived which I took to Portslade. 313209 had returned from Brighton so I took the beast to Worthing, with a short wait before fresh dud 377427 reappeared from Brighton (and getting a seat this time) I took it to West Worthing. 313209 was sitting in the siding in the middle of the up & down tracks to the west of West Worthing, to allow another service to pass, idea was if this 377 was required I would catch it to Worthing and meet up with the 313 for my next move. The 377 was dud, so I decided to stay on the platform as 313209 rolled in to take me to East Worthing, to try and make a 2 minute connection. Not the easiest of stations as to get to the other platform involves going up a large ramp, along a road and down some more ramps, but I made it with time to spare as 313205 returned, and with the 3rd time of the day, making it my newest super-dud (313209 by this stage was a double super dud, with me counting super duds by diverting the number of times caught by the number of carriages, so a 313 would be super-dud after 3 rides, a 390/1 would be super after 11 rides).

Back to Worthing, and a quick visit outside to get a rubbish baguette, and back onto the station with a couple options, another “if it is a winner I will catch it to Shoreham, and catch the Littlehampton – Victoria service to Hove, if dud I will give it a miss and catch the Littlehampton-Victoria service to connect up with another stopper. The first unit was dud (can’t remember which 377 it was), but the Victoria service was winner 377110 taking me to Hove. To the other platform with a couple minute wait before 313209 reappeared to take me to the final station on the “metro”, to Aldrington. I knew I only had a couple minutes to make the connection with an Brighton bound service, however Aldrington is like Dawlish Warren and is evil if you want to get from one platform to another, down a long access path to a footbridge to go under the tracks and up another long access path, even at a run I barely made it as 313205 was arriving as I was coming up the path. A station which might be worth looking into walking back to Hove if you miss that train (just under half a mile by track, so would be quicker walking than having a 30 minute wait).

Into Brighton, keeping an eye on the 313 on the Hove/Brighton runs and that was a dud, so down onto Brighton to see what was happening, with the football on, I can only assume the regular 313s on Lewes/Seaford stoppers were replaced by double 377s, bit of a shame (as I wanted to clear as many 313s as I could today, but they can wait for another daysave when I do shack attacking on the Seaford branch). I eyed up (and actually sat) on an express Victoria service as it was a required 377, until I spotted a pair of 377s rolling in from Lewes, didn’t pay much attention until I saw that they weren’t regular 377/1s or 4s, but a pair of 3s, and I need shed lots of the 3-car versions. Dud 377319 was leading with winner 377303 behind, which I took to London Road (Brighton), my final station between Lewes & Brighton. Back to Brighton on a pair of winners, 377458 & 377459, with making a quick dash from P8 to P7 to jump onto dud 171728.

Declassified 1st class time, the 2+1 seating is rather nice, as I took the 2-car unit to Polegate, a brief wait before a Victoria – Ore service arrived formed of dud 377462 & winner 377472 down the coastway, reversing at Eastbourne and taking me to Cooden Beach, a station with views of the sea, always a bonus as the sun had come out. No time to wait as it down the ramps underneath the tracks to the other platform with winner 377159 leading dud 377105 taking me the short distance to Normans Bay, a station seemingly in the middle of nowhere, with platforms only long enough for 3 coaches, the rest of the train hanging over the level crossing. Nice relaxing time through, before the Brighton-Ore service arrived, formed of winner 377134 & dud 377124, I was on a roll with scoring 377s. This particular pair took me to the end of the service at Ore.

Quick hop over to the other platform at Ore to jump back on 377462/377472 for the short hop back to Hastings, with a quick hop over to the P3/P4 island with a brief wait. Dud 171728 (I was having rubbish luck with the 171s though) arrived to take me to my next new station, the low platforms at Winchelsea, another station in the middle of nowhere, with the village being over half a mile away down an unlit narrow lane, but it was beautiful to see the countryside. 171726 arrived back from Ashford to take me back to St Leonard’s Warrior Square, should have probably ditched it at Hastings as I missed a required unit from Hastings to St Leonard’s Warrior Square, although the platforms at St Leonards are not the best to get from one side to the other (involving leaving the station, going up over a footbridge and back into the station, I’m surprised Southeastern who manage the station haven’t fitted barriers like they have at Hastings, after-all if any fare dodgers wanted free travel they would ditch at St Leonard’s and walk into town). Dud 171725 rolled in to take me to Three Oaks.

Three Oaks, like Winchelsea is a 2-hourly service, although unlike Winchelsea hasn’t got good views as it’s in a cutting, with quite a lot of CCTV cameras around, but it is located near the village centre, and has a nice little waiting area. The platform is tiny, SDO must be used, yep it can only hold 1 coach. Nice peaceful 20-odd minute wait, reading my book, sitting in the sun, before 171728 rolled back. Making a note that a required 377 was sitting in Ore sidings, saw me ditching the 171 at Hastings, a few minutes later winner 377119 rolled in to take me to St Leonard’s Warrior Square, with winner (at last!) 171730 rolled in (I passed this unit earlier heading towards Brighton at Bexhill, so can only assume there is 4 171s diagrammed on Ashford – Brighton services on a Saturday).

To Hastings where I had a brief look outside the station, apart from a M&S local (whose idea of price reductions due to food going out of date the same day was knocking 10p off a baguette), I arrived back at the station and accidently caught dud 375153 & winner 375705 back to St Leonards Warrior Square, before the next Southern pair arrived, formed of duds 377159/377105 taking me to Pevensey & Westham, meaning another station cleared, so leaving just the limited service at Pevensey Bay & Doleham, with the couple stations between Ashford & Rye which can be done on a Sunday (Winchelsea & Three Oaks are ‘closed’ on Sundays [bar one or two early morning services].

Nice little station, but my time was short at 15 minutes before winner 377434 rolled in to take me to Cooden Beach, with winner 377456 doing the honours taking me back to Brighton. Noticing that it calls at Hampden Park in both directions, I ditched at Hampden with RTT suggesting an Eastbourne – Victoria would arrive before the Brighton service returned, so chance of scoring another winner (sadly they didn’t both call at Glynde, that will have to wait until another Sunday). It was delayed due to sheep on the line, but was worth the wait with winners 377464 & 377428 taking me back to Lewes with a brief wait before the delayed 377456 arrived to take me to Brighton. 7 minutes to get some food from WH Smiths and jump onto the all-station caller heading to Portsmouth Harbour. Ticket worked the barriers both ways, with no crowd control barriers from the football, and I grabbed my usual meal-deal.

Dud 377140 was on the Portsmouth Harbour stopper (I can only assume that time of night both the West Worthing stoppers & Portsmouth to Littlehampton services have ended so Portsmouth to Brighton gets to call at pretty much every station, the “This is the Southern Service” announcements were pretty much nonstop, by the time it had finished with the list of stations it was calling at, the next station was reached so it did it all again. Anyhow, I ditched the unit at Southbourne, with checking RTT saw 2 Southampton bound services which both called at Emsworth, but only the first at Southbourne, which would get to Southampton with time to spare before the Romsey rockets. First up was winner 377445 to take me the mile and a half to my final new shack of the day with Emsworth, with a brief rest before dud 377136 taking me the distance back to Southampton, after Swanwick runs nonstop and gets a bit boring after a while. Unusual in that the unit rolled into P4 as a 444 was on P3.

Into Southampton, where I had time to go out of the station to the little Co-Op to pick up a bit of food, that wrap from Brighton was wearing off, so I got myself a chicken pasta pot, and foolishly put it into my bag. Foolish as by the time I got back to the station, the pot managed to come open and instead of the pasta being in the pot it was all in the bottom of my bag :(, at least the carrot cake slice was nice. Due to the blockade around Salisbury the Romsey rockets were only running in the circle, so the station staff at Southampton were telling passengers if they wanted Millbrook, Redbridge or Romsey not to board the 158 which had arrived on P1 heading to Romsey via Eastleigh, but to wait a couple minutes as 158888 arrived to take us back to Romsey. Where the PIS was displaying the next service would be to Romsey, whatever happened at giving it a false destination of Chandlers Ford via Southampton (or Redbridge via Eastleigh). Anyway a drive home where my bag was emptied out and washed to try and get rid of the pasta & sauce (where it is currently drying on a rack waiting for the sun to come out as the weather today (Sunday) is a bit rubbish.

Anyways a productive day, lot of new stations called at, with some new units ticked off in my book :), so some pretty (and not-so pretty) pictures:
377159/377105 at Normans Bay, bit big for the platform

The sea be that way

Enjoy the walk

Beautiful area

171726 arriving to take me back West, one day this might be a 395 (lol)

171725 at Three Oaks... bit big for the platform

The old platform decaying on the left, with 171725 running away to Ashford

Not really a lot at Three Oaks, I think the conductor was surprised when I alighted & boarded.

You seem to be doing a lot more shack scratching these days, are you finding it more interesting this way? I enjoy doing it this way as it means you can kill two birds with one stone, so to speak!

Exceptionally productive day there, I hope my DaySave action next month is even half as productive!

Shack scratching is interesting, gives me something else to do when hanging around doing Victoria - Clapham leaps on 377s

Doleham is going to be interesting, will probably involve a bike ride/mile and a half walk to get back towards Three Oaks to get on a service back towards Brighton

*goes off pondering an idea*

You'll have no problems with Doleham. 25 min walk to Three Oaks - 20 if you up the pace!

25 minutes is fine for the walk, next train from Three Oaks isn't til 19:05

A rough idea how to get both Pevensey Bay & Doleham covered on the same day:

Romsey 12:02 Southampton 12:20
Southampton 12:33 Brighton 14:18
Brighton 14:32 Polegate 14:56
Polegate 15:04 Pevensey Bay 15:30
Pevensey Bay 15:45 Pevensey & Westham 15:47
Pevensey & Westham 16:27 Hastings 16:49
Hastings 17:09 Doleham 17:20
Walk to Three Oaks
Three Oaks 19:05 Brighton 20:20
Brighton 20:30 Southampton 22:16
Southampton 22:20 Romsey 22:33

Probable tickets:
Romsey to Southampton day return
Southampton to Rye day return
Pevensey & Westham to Pevensey Bay return [covers for that double back]

There is a connection at Pevensey & Westham towards Ore at 15:49, so possible to get to Hastings earlier, but that is rather tight, even with a footbridge to help. I used 26th May for timings. Anybody suggest any changes (for example I can probably bring forward my departure from Romsey in order to get onto that Brighton train, RTT isn't suggesting that catching the 12:13-odd Victoria service won't get me into Brighton [checked in case a Portsmouth - Brighton comes up to connect with the Southampton - Victoria at Havant]

FGW site is suggesting that you can't get a gold card discounted day return to Doleham (£10.10 day return to Rye which is the same price)

You're a busy man, Kite! I'll admit to not reading each report in depth (maybe later) but skimming through and checking out the photos, those looked like some really enjoyable days out :D Certainly a massive variety of stock and places visited.

2nd May – A West Midlands Day Out

A nice little trip to the West Midlands was planned for this bank holiday Saturday, originally I had pencilled in a FOSS but with a rail tour popping up on the Monday decided to push back the FOSS to July, anyhow the day begins with a nice little drive to Grateley (mainly because my legs were hunting after doing a “yellow peril” shack attack on the stations between Newbury & Reading on the Friday (cycling between them on a little folding bike). 5:57 rolled around and 159011 making its first appearance in my log for 2015 was the 159 on duty for the short run to Basingstoke. One of these days I will get Whitchurch & Overton into my book of shacks covered, most likely on a weekday evening peak.

Anyhow into Basingstoke, and across to P4 to pick up a newspaper and an eye at which FGW 165 would roll in, although only needing 165133 of the 2-car 165s (plus 101 & 107 of the 3-car versions), it was going to be a long shot at 133 arriving, and as predicted it was a dud in the shape of 165123. Only previously having this unit on a short hop in London the previous month, so I decided to give it a few extra miles for a ride to Reading, gave me somewhere to read the newspaper, the voyager can wait to be picked up from Reading. Across to P3 and dud 220005 rolled in on the service towards Manchester, finding my reserved table seat to settle back and view the countryside as it accelerated away next to a late running FGW, would it take the new Festival chord or get held at a red signal to follow the HST over the viaduct? Held at a red signal to follow the HST over the viaduct, that new chord is going to be a PIAS to get in the book.

Service was around half-full, some football supporters, but due to a lineside fire around Canley it was being diverted via Warwick (no calling at Coventry or International) which played a big part in deciding to avoid the West Coast and focus on the Snow Hills, to get my 172 wants down and to try and reduce the number of stations required in that area, with maybe shifting across to the Crosscity/Chase line if I finished earlier than expected. Anyhow an enforced change at Banbury, which I didn’t mind as it meant a Chiltern. When I did this back in January this service was a 168 with a 172 on the back, and it was the same again today, dud 168107 leading winner 172103, only 2 more of the Chiltern 172s to go, half-way there. Taking a seat in the 172 for the short near 20 mile trip to Leamington Spa, where I changed over to the bay platform for the Strafford bound service, formed of dud 168112 (current 168 requirements are 168001, 168003, 168005 & 168109), taking me to my first new shack of the day in the shape of the 3 platform Hatton

And no I didn’t have my hat on, as I waited a few minutes before the stopper from Banbury (already identified as dud 165014) arrived to take me to Solihull. The Warwicks will probably be got in the same way the next visit to the West Midlands, saves hanging around, anyhow handing over 640 pennies to the ticket office in exchange for a DayTripper ticket and back to the platform to await the next Moor Street bound service. Dud 172334 rolled in to take me to Acocks Green , the island platform allowing me easy access to board double winners 172218 & 172217 back down the line to Olton.

Next up was another winner, 172331 taking me to Moor Street, where a quick over the bridge to P1 scored me winner 172211 leading dud 172214 down the line towards Whitlock’s End, checking RTT for connections, and as it appeared the units swap between Shirley & Yardley Wood, I jumped off at Yardley Wood , a station where you have to exit via a long ramp to the road bridge to get down towards the other platform, but I made it with time to spare as winner 172345 rolled in to take me up the line to Spring Road , another station similar to Yardley Wood, up and over the bridge, ready as dud 172340 rolled in, back down the line to Hall Green. At least Hall Green had a footbridge, but I had a quite wonder around before duds 172214/172211 returned from Whitlock’s End to take me to Small Heath

Small Heath, a station with 2 island platforms, although one set is disused and is passed by XC services heading towards New Street, quite a busy track which sees 8/9 trains an hour, although only 2 of these stop at Small Heath. I didn’t have long to wait before 172213 rolled in to take me to Tyseley , allowing me to have a good look at some of the units on Tyseley depot, various LM 170s, XC 170s, a couple LM 172s, and a 150 & 153. Anyhow with 15 minutes to wait on the P1/P2 island (P3/P4 being used by services to/from the Whitlocks End branch, where P1/P2 is for Solihull), another busy station, rushing services, before winner 172339 rolled in to take me to Snow Hill. The idea was to get to either The Hawthorns or Jewellery Quarter to await the service behind which was an all-station stopper. However that idea failed when I saw a 168/0 sitting in Snow Hill P2, getting ready to depart.

Quick dash over to get onto the 168 a few seconds before the doors started to close, to check the number, and it was dud 168002, bugger (although I should have been paying attention as I saw it rushing towards Birmingham earlier when around Small Heath), to Moor Street and over the bridge and onto the Stourbridge Junction stopper from Stratford, formed of dud 172332 taking me to Langley Green, the formation of a former branch line branching off just before the station, but an otherwise standard station, back to Smethwick Galton Bridge on dud 172342. Via the maze at Smethwick Galton Bridge (one day I will get that connecting line), to the westbound platform with a slightly delayed (which was a bit unnerving due to a tight connection at the next stop) 172222 rolled in, taking me to Cradley Heath

I wish I could say more about Cradley, but I was there for less than a couple minutes before heading out on the return of 172332 taking me to Old Hill, brief moment of peace before the next stopper arrived in the shape of dud 172215 to take me to Lye. Brief wait at Lye (had a little search outside the station for any sort of shop to buy food, but failing), before 172215 returned to take me to the The Hawthorns , bit of a dash over to the Midland Metro platform for tram 21, my first of the new Midland Metro fleet (only previously had 16 in March 14), for the short trip down to Jewellery Quarter.

Ok cheating a bit, by using the tram, but pretty soon I was onto 172213 again to take me back to Tyseley (again), this time going into P3, with the next service arriving into P4. At Snow Hill I passed a required 168/0, but gave it a miss for a chance to get a certain station which sees only one passenger service call a week, excluding when additional services call for football when Birmingham City play at home. Duds 172217/172218 rolled in to take me to the short distance to Bordesley. After a brief photo, I headed down the narrow stairs to the street below and caught bus 4948 on a route 60 to take me back to Moor Street. Would have been quicker to walk with the traffic, but the front seats on the upper deck gave a good view. A Chiltern 67 loco hauled set had pulled out a few minutes before I arrived, so it was onto dud 172213 (again) to Snow Hill, where I knew there was both a Tesco and Sainsburys located outside the station for lunch.

Tesco had pretty much nothing left, so it was to Sainsburys for a sandwich and back to Snow Hill. A rough plan had formed to get my remaining 3 stations within the standard daytripper area on the Snow Hill lines (although is Earlswood within the standard area or within the add-on area?), before the Stratford bound service there was a Dorridge bound train formed of winner 172333 which I took to Moor Street to await dud 172345 to arrive taking me down the line to Wythall, a few minutes later winner 172344 arrived to take me to Shirley where a lovely new footbridge was being built. Across to the other platform to get onto winners 172338 & 172221 down to Whitlock’s End . 10 minute fester at Whitlocks End before the same units took me back up the line, where I decided to remain on board for the distance to Stourbridge Junction, mainly to see which 139 was out and about this week. Sadly it was 139001 (need 002), but the long distance allowed me to watch what was moving and I spotted a required unit working down to Whitlocks End which would be back up, so gave me an idea.

Back to The Hawthorns on duds 172217/172218, watching a required 172/3 on a Great Malvern service, and looking at RTT formed a plan. Winner 172216 rolled in to take me to Smethwick Galton Bridge, where eventually I found the low level New Street bound platform. Rough idea was to get the Walsall stopper to Smethwick Rofle Street with a connection to the next Wolverhampton stopper, however problems around Shrewsbury area meant the service from Aberystwyth & Pwllheli was 32 minutes late departing Shrewsbury and got later (40 down at Wolverhampton) so the Walsall stopper was late departing which put the connection to bed. Duds 158837/158822/150252 arrived, yes a 150/2 into New Street, must be rare. To New Street, where chaos was the order of the day, I had just missed a Cross-City line service which called at Duddeston, so it was a wait for the delayed service from Wolverhampton, which due to its 12 lay-over at New Street, the 6 minute delay was wiped out. Dud 313206 took me to Duddeston with winner 323209 to Five Ways. This service had a few Villa fans on board, and the body language I had assumed Villa had been beaten (looked depressed and quiet), where in fact they had won. Anyhow across the bridge quickly at Five Ways to board a delayed 323208 back to New Street.

A Virgin service heading to Wolverhampton was running 47 minutes down, formed of winner 390118 taking me to Sandwell & Dudley. A pair of LM 170s heading towards Shrewsbury were duds, which was good as the next Wolverhampton stopper was winner 350256. I was going to stay on until Tipton to try and make a 3 minute connection, the service was 3 minutes down on departing Sandwell & Dudley so I bailed at Dudley Port, the service from Wolverhampton at this point hadn’t left the station (waiting for the Virgin/Shrewsbury to clear the track?), and eventually reached Dudley Port 6 minutes down, I could have easily made the Tipton connection. A task for the next West Midlands Trip, and with another delay put to bed the connection at Smethwick Rofle again, and it was dud 323203. To Sandwell & Dudley, idea was to get on the 170s from Shrewsbury to New Street and walk to Moor Street linking up with the potentially required 172 from Malvern before some 168 action.

Leading was dud 170507 with winner 170504 behind for the short run into New Street. Finding my way out of the station (how long before Network Rail fit ticket gates as the manned points were unmanned again) and across to Moor Street, which was quiet, service levels dropping quite early on (around 7pm). Winner 172336 came out of the tunnel and heading down towards Solihull, where I alighted. Brief rest (and spotting a 68 heading towards Moor Street) before dud 168113 arrived to take me to my final new station of the day at Lapworth. Quite happy to get Lapworth into the book as the service levels during the day are not the best (50-60 minute wait on a 2 hourly service). Back to Solihull on dud 168106, where I alighted in search of food, 10 minute walk to the town centre area, and I had located a McDonalds, a couple other local takeaways didn’t take my fancy. I should have bailed at Dorridge as it appears to have a couple takeaways outside the station. Back at Solihull and duds 168110/168112 took me to Banbury, the train guard for the rear set managing to lock himself out of the rear cab after Leamington (oops).

At Banbury things went wrong, I knew the final XC service from Manchester to Southampton is timetabled to arrive at Basingstoke at 23:07 which makes an unofficial connection with the 23:10 departure to Salisbury, however due to the XC being routed via Coventry instead of via Warwick, it was 15 minutes down by the time it reached Banbury, got so bad that the FGW stopper went ahead. Dud 220022 eventually rolled in to take me back towards Reading, I was going to stay on until Basingstoke, but it was still 15 minutes down at Reading so there was no hope of making that unofficial connection, so decided to get onto the final FGW Basingstoke stopper, and it was 165123 again. To Basingstoke with pretty much an hour to kill, nothing much happening apart from magic Stagecoach “Coastliner” branded double deckers outside to take lucky passengers on a ride to Winchester, so after visiting the little Londis I headed back to the station to sit down with time to kill, reading my book.

The 00:26 was displayed at being operated by Northern Rail, yes I was that bored. A busy (soon emptied out) 159007 arrived to take me back home. Thankfully I had my car as by the time it reached Grateley the weather was absolutely terrible, heavy rain with wind, I would have got soaked walking home. Anyways with the late finish, I decided to call my Thameslink shack attack off, Sutton Common will have to wait for another day.

Anyways some pictures:
Tracks divert at Tyseley

A 172/3 rushing past Lye, a station with many ramps

A 172 approaching Tyseley

Doors open at Bordesley, next train be in a week.

172217/172218 departing, Quite a barren platform, good for photographers I guess

New footbridge at Shirley

Looks a lot better than the new footbridge at Thatcham

172221/172338 at Whitlock’s End

Is he giving me a wave?

I love the 323s

Delays a plenty

Salisbury, the newest outpost of the Northern Rail empire?

What time does that call at Bordesley then? I must investigate doing it asap, same for Polesworth.

Very busy day in my neck of the woods, if I wasn't working I'd have been up there too. The perils of a retail job that!

Plenty of new units and new shacks - good work there, especially on nabbing Bordesley. It's one service a week, but at least it's at a sensible time. Was the enforced change at Banbury because you have a Gold Card?

Bordesley is lunchtime on a Saturday so not too bad. Polesworth is much more tricky: 07:23 on a Friday morning!

I'm pretty sure Polesworth is that time every weekday, certainly nothing in LM's London to Crewe timetable to say differently!

Good to know I don't have to wait for a home game for Birmingham's football team to do it, I must confess I thought that was the only way to do it, having not looked at a Snow Hill Lines timetable since before I got my last LM 172 in the book. Quite a while ago now!

Will definitely be booking time off involving a Saturday then, although that can't be done this week. Too long a story to go into that one...Polesworth will also be done on a non-work day involving a stay at Rugby Travelodge (right next to the station) I reckon, get the train to Polesworth and either walk to Tamworth, walk down to Polesworth village centre or pay the ching for a taxi to Tamworth.

Or at least, that's the plan!

Ah, right you are!

I haven't been but did look into it several months ago. If I recall correctly Polesworth has plenty of buses (including a stop quite close to the station) heading to Tamworth and Lichfield, so no need to fork out for a taxi. Closest station if you're up for a walk is Wilencote, about an hour away by foot.

You had me worried it was FO for a bit lol!

Good to hear a bus stop is near the station at Polesworth, that'll make it a bit easier! Not up for the walk to Wilnecote admittedly, and I'm thinking I may pop up to Derby after Polesworth for a Derbyshire Wayfarer bash. Maybe Nottingham for an epic tram bashing spree. Plenty to decide upon that's for sure, more importantly is finding a day to do it as I'm fully booked until mid-June!
