One gap now, that first could fill is an earlier departure from London. Say 0600 arriving at 1000 if they are serious about taking airline share. The current approx 1125 arrival is too late for most business passengers.

10.00 is too late for most current business passengers add on contingency time and travelling time (the final destination is unlikely to be in the city centre)and it makes morning meetings impossible. A journey time of 4 hours is just too slow.

Stabling, or looping? I thought there was a general prohibition against stabling trains on running lines.

Looping - I would presume (although they might be waiting for a while).

By unique I meant relative to what currently exists!

Using the avoider at York has to be worth investigating. Always wondered why the Flying Scotsman never makes use of this, surely it's worth a minute or two off the journey and can't be that much route learning to undertake.

Unlikely ash39, too many lines to cross to access and leave the avoider with the attendant conflicts to the many other services using the station. I would think the avoider has a low speed limit for any passenger trains. A non-stop at York train (of which the southbound Flying Scotsman is the only one at present) approaching York on the up fast has a pretty clear passage through the station via Platform 3 and out of the other end still on the up fast without obstructing anything bar possibly a once an hour Scarborough-bound branch train. Several southbound loaded coal trains especially those heading for Drax power station are already routed via the station to avoid conflicts in passing from the avoider to the up main ECML.
