I see on NRE that a train has derailed at Sheffield causing disruption until 4.00pm

Any further details?

EMT have just tweeted a picture, it would appear to be the Northern 158 that was wrapped in yellow for the Tour de France. Can't embed here but I'm sure someone will soon. Network Rail say disruption will last until at least 1600 this afternoon.

Whenever I see that unit, I always have to do a double take as it looks like something belonging to Network Rail.

Looks like Platform 2 is out of use, all South to North services seem to be using Platform 5 with London services moved to 8

Another photo on Twitter shows the train looked to have been coming out of the carriage sidings at the end of Platform 1 and was moving across to Platform 2.

Same here, saw it at Accrigton once and thought that Network Rail had upgraded from the 150 they use... then I saw the TdF vinyls. D'oh.

Is it too soon to say maybe the unit was inspired by the cycling livery and wanted to try a bit of off-'road'ing?

My cr*p attempts at humour aside, I hope the driver and those involved aren't too badly shaken by the incident.

On a train...somewhere!
Just 9 hours before reopening of the line is very impressive!

Thankfully the positioning of the derailed unit means that the majority of services can be worked round - recovery is still ongoing and far from complete.

Bad news in terms of the SPAD and it's apparent consequences ... No point in jumping to any conclusions until the full investigation is concluded mind.

I guess that a SPAD that results in a derailment is likely a career-limiting incident? :(

It's not all it seems, but no doubt it will be released eventually what happened.

According to National Rail Enquires website slight damage (whatever that means) has been caused the the track and needs to be repaired as well as the train in question moved.

Delays don't seem to be as bad as I would have expected but it couldn't have happened at a worst time, what with Sheffield United playing at Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday at home to Huddersfield

Agreed.

When I saw it initially today (leaving Sheffield in the morning), I saw the lines closed/ bottom end of the platforms roped off/ dozens of blokes in orange boiler suits and assumed that the yellow DMU was a Network Rail one (they've got a yellow 150, haven't they?) on some planned engineering thing (Easter weekend etc), rather than an actual accident.

It meant platforms one and two were closed off with all through trains using five/ six/ seven, the bay platforms being doubled up with units (which could have caused confusion when platform four had two "Leeds" services in it at the same time - luckily it was quite easy to differentiate my quiet Dearne Valley stopper from the busy/ noisy one taking quite a few policemen and quite a few Sheffield United fans to Barnsley... don't think anyone would confuse the two trains!).

Not nice when these things happen, but thankfully it was on a quieter weekend than some are.

Yes, Network Rail have a yellow 150/1 and co-incidentally it was out and about this afternoon heading south down the goods lines just north of Derby Station.
At Sheffield by 14:30 they were able to use the north end of Platform 1B as a terminal platform to reduce the pressure on the bays, but the 158 was still firmly resting on the ballast and there didn't seem any realistic prospect of rerailing it and repairing track damage anytime soon. Almost all services were operating reasonably normally and the Liverpool-Norwich and vice versa were back to the normal route.
Travelling northbound this morning my train was diverted via Chesterfield Platform 3, the Old Road, Beighton, Darnall and Nunnery Curve to enter Sheffield from the North end. Sensibly this route is scheduled for a small number of EMT and XC services to keep route knowledge current.

Out of interest, why is platform 7 used exclusively for the hourly Liverpool service now? It used to be mainly used by the slower 5 coach London services but these generally go to 8 now.

Depends on how much of the cause is actually the driver's and how much is signalling, track, train, weather, trees, scrotes, mysterious shadowy figures in Jarvis coats, etc.

I take exception to the reference to my former Jarvis colleagues whether meant in jest or not. No One ever proved Jarvis staff did anything wrong at Potters Bar

Not at all. Depends on exact circumstances.

I know one particular colleague who ended up with his train mounting Hornsey platform as he overran the buffer stops in the reversing siding quite spectacularly a few years back. He's still driving.

Seeing as Jarvis disappeared some years ago, anyone wearing a Jarvis coat on the railway today is certainly not a Jarvis employee and probably isn't supposed to be there.
