Runaway train at Feltham

The following was a question on Robert Elms Radio London show today - here is a link to a picture on the shows Facebook page. Can any forum members help?

The two locos look far more like Eastern Region types than anything that would be running near Feltham or Whitton. The derailed loco could be an A3 or V2? This is emphasised by the headcode discs on the passing local train which are of a style used again on the Eastern Region only. The loco they are on may be an N2 or an N7, as used on Kings Cross/Liverpool Street suburban services? The loco lying on it's side probably ran off the trap points at the end of the siding or loop adjacent to the main line for some reason.

The derailed loco is an LNER K3 and the passing train is also an ex LNER type, so I doubt very much if it was at Feltham on the Southern region.But seeing the "discs" on the passing train I should say it's on the ex GER part of the ER.Has anybody got a date for this photo ?

Well, it's definitely not Feltham - no cuttings around in that area anywhere near that size... No 3rd rail visible either.

Back on the Facebook page someone mentioned that the person who asked the questions father (who took the picture?) Lived in Winchcombe Hill. Does that help pin it down?

Winchmore Hill I think?

Doesn't narrow things down much beyond the GE section, however I don't think the stock is a Quint-art set, so probably not the Enfield or Chingford lines, and it's not on the Palace Gates line.

Winchmore Hill is on the Hertford Loop, which is only two track, whereas the photo implies this being a four-track section? (Unless the station is one with off-set platform faces?)

Well, while Winchmore Hill is in a cutting, it's platforms are opposite each other - so that can't be the location in the original picture. It would seem that the abode of the photographer might be a bit of a red herring?

Agreed. Struggling to find info about GE route codes online, which might narrow it down, but from the houses it might be London suburbs. Can't identify a possible station though.

LNER signals, BR era Way Out sign (not tangerine so not NER), but that doesn't add anything new.

The loco on the passenger train is no fully sharp in my monitor, but it may be a Class N7 0-6-2T. These were mainly used on GE London suburban services, but also worked out of Kings Cross & elsewhere. Don't recognise the location.

Although this is not Feltham (not electrified), note that some freights did cross regional boundaries, including in the London area.

Have found GE headcode diagrams in a LNER Sectional Appendix (1947). In the photo, the passenger train code applies to the line between London Liverpool Street, Cheshunt, Broxbourne And Hertford East, via Clapton, or via Stratford. (In either direction)
