I will be doing a sort-of overall holiday report for China.

Probably a bit of exaggeration regarding Pencoed, but those platforms are far apart. I was hunting more for 150s than the pacers, as the 150s pop up all over the network (West Wales lines, Heart of Wales, North Wales) where the pacers tend to stick to Cardiff with the odd adventure out west.

I gave the rail replacement bus a 30 minute head-start from Basingstoke last night, I still managed to beat it back to Grateley (and that was me going the 'back' road via Overton/Whitchurch)

I've not been to Cardiff for ages. I guess the 153s are out more there now seeing as though you picked up four. I think the last time I went I only saw the one on the bay branch. I only need one and one 175 so I must go back and try and get them at some point. Problem is they could be anywhere in Wales!

A 153 should be found on the Cardiff Bay although being a Saturday it can be replaced by a 2 Car Unit if there is an event being held in Cardiff Bay for strengthening purposes. Should be one working Radyr to Coryton circuit and others in Cardiff area can be found strengthening Ebbw Vales.

15th February – Going Overground by saying Farewell to Staines & East Coast

Last weekend of Staines diversions, yippee, and last chance to ride an East Coast service before Stagecoach/Virgin takes over, so after a nice little drive to Andover to board 159102/159012 to take me to Woking (driving to Andover avoids the first service from Grateley which terminates at Basingstoke to be pushed onto the stopper, gaining me an hour). Once at Woking I had a few options for my next movement east, the 455 stopper was due out first, not wanted so the 2nd movement was the triple 450 from Basingstoke/Alton.

Required 450096 rolled up so my decision was made, sadly the units from Alton were both dud (450564 & 450038), but one 450 is better than no 450 and has the advantage of not taking forever going via Staines (444s & 159s are restricted and can’t go as fast). Rolling towards Clapham of the Junction, where I alighted to see what was happening, a minute or two later a pair of 450s rolled in from Windsor, winner 450559 was on the front with dud 450119 behind. Onwards to Waterloo, no stopping at Vauxhall today, however it hit Waterloo around the time of the 20 minute departure gap (nothing between: 14 and: 35), so heading via Sainsburys Local to pick up something hot for late breakfast, I went towards the Jubilee platforms to head to the madness known as London Bridge Low-Level to see what was about.

A Thameslink double 319 were both duds, 3rd departure was a pair of required 377s on a Horsham stopper, leading was 377418 with 377116 behind, so I stayed on board until Norwood Junction, a 455/8 which the Horsham overtook was not required, so over to the “up” platforms, and required 455839 rolled in on a stopper back to London Bridge. Checking my watch to see that I had time to do a Cannon Street dash found me on winner 375803 leading dud 375615 for the short distance, and back out on winners 465177/465161 for some networker action (need to do a 465 on a fast service again)

Back at the Bridge, I went down to the Northern line platforms, and headed up towards Kings Cross St Pancras and eventually found my way to the surface, 15 minutes or so to spare for the East Coast service to Leeds which calls at Stevenage, swapping railcards to my old Network Railcard (although when buying the tickets, no warning came up when I hit Network Gold Card that it wasn’t valid on East Coast, like it does if you try and select a ticket in the West Midlands where Virgin (WC) run). I found myself a nice seat, on a busy train, reserved from Stevenage so I sat there (giving my iPod a quick charge). Sadly my final Directly Operated Railways East Coast service was powered by dud 91116 (but with new (to me) DVT 82214 on the rear).

At Stevenage I noticed a required 313 on a stopper, which I worked out to having 2 chances at scoring some winning 365s back to Finsbury to do a Finsbury shuttle back to Kings Cross. First was due 365502 leading required 365533, so I jumped on board for the non-stop and more comfortable run back to Finsbury Park, where I exited the station in search of some lunch, and finding a little Tesco Express, which must be rare as it had no self-service checkouts, only manned tills. Grabbing some lunch and heading back to the station I noticed the units which would have formed my 2nd chance back from Stevenage, and both were duds.

A pair of dud 313s rolled in, but I was waiting for the pair I saw at Stevenage, with required 313026 leading (and dud 313039 behind) reducing my Great Northern 313s to 9 required, for the short trip to Kings Cross. Decision time as I decided to try and knock out some more 378s on the East London Line, so the Victoria line took me to Highbury & Islington, where I decided to get the first unit towards Dalston Junction, regardless if it was needed or not, more options at Dalston than Highbury. Dud 378143 did the honours, where I changed to winner 378145 for the single station hop to Haggerston, winner 378136 took me the next station along to Hoxton where I hit duds, 3 duds later I decided to get the next unit (dud 378210) to Shoreditch High Street, with some more duds, before deciding to get onto 378139 to Whitechapel.

Thankfully my run of duds came to an end with winner 378135 taking me to Shadwell, 378146 to Wapping, 378147 under the Thames to Rotherhithe, 378138 to Canada Water, changing over to the northbound platform with winner 378141 back to Rotherhithe where I did some hunting (Rotherhithe, probably one of the better stations on the East London Line core as you can see the trains coming and dash across to the other platform if a required unit appears). Using this theory and getting the units into my book with tiny distances (must be in single figure chains), I managed to get 378148 to Canada Water, 378149 back to Rotherhithe, 378206 to Canada Water (always a bonus with a 378/2 on the East London Line, saves looking for them on the NLL or Watford DC), dud 378135 back to Rotherhithe, where I was going to call it a day before seeing required 378205 coming out of the tunnel where I stayed on until Surrey Quays (awful station to change platforms), with a wait in the open air.

Winner 378154 arrived to take me back to Rotherhithe, where I hit 4 duds in a roll before deciding enough was enough and caught the next northbound service (dud 378144) back to Whitechapel and onto the district line for a single stop to score a new station in the shape of Aldgate East. 3 more district line trains later and a Hammersmith & City line train decided to show up to take me to Liverpool Street, would have been quicker changing to a Circle line service at Tower Hill. To the main-line platforms, to see what was happening where I noticed required 379011 getting ready to depart on a Cambridge service, and needing the toilet I jumped on board for the short trip to Tottenham Hale.

Over the platform to wait for the next southbound service from the airport, dud 379019 was leading but with required 379001 behind. Back to Liverpool Street with a tight connection to a service formed of winner 315807 taking me to Bethal Green, winner 317883 (and first 317/8 in the book) to Hackney Downs, and back into Liverpool Street. Time was a bit tight, so I jumped on the first available service, sadly it was dud 315826 (but you can’t win them all). Deciding which method to take me back to Waterloo, found me on a metropolitan line service to Baker Street and standing in the southbound platforms to see which arrived first, Bakerloo or Jubilee. It was a Jubilee line service, back to Waterloo, where I headed to the concourse.

Several options I had to get me back to Basingstoke to connect up with the Exeter/Bristol bound service, where I was hoping to get a seat this time. First departure was a pair of 444s towards Weymouth (I think), my heart bounced when I was the rear unit was one of the magical duo, 444003, sadly my luck and it wasn’t 444017 on the front, but 444006, but another 444 cleared leaving just 017 to go before my 2nd class clearance. 444003 took me on a Clapham Junction hop, where I was going to board the Basingstoke/Alton trio, changing at Staines (mainly to say farewell) to a 455 on the stopper and then onto the official connection train of a Portsmouth Harbour/Poole service. Dud 450093 was leading with required 450025 in the middle and dud 450001 bringing up the rear, so I took a seat in 025 for the short journey to Staines.

After taking a rubbish photo of the station sign, dud 455703 rolled in to take me to Woking Pier, and would I get lucky with the pair of 444s towards Basingstoke? Nope, 444025 & 444010 were the pair taking me back to Basingstoke, with 159013/159005 doing the honours back to Andover, where I managed to get a table seat, no seat opposite the loo this week.

End of a busy day in London, reducing my required 378/1s down to just 378153, time to make a start on trying to get the 378/2s on the North London Line (better frequency than the Watford DC). I said farewell to East Coast, sadly not on a long-distance trip, but first time using an East Coast service on walk-up tickets, and making final bag checks before departing Monday morning to get to Heathrow. My final Sunday London bash for a few weeks due to various engineering works around Andover/Basingstoke/Woking.

On other news, any idea what is in this cabinet on a 379 (I was thinking disabled ramp but that would seem to be an after-thought)?

A very productive trip there, fair dos! Must be so happy to not have to do the Staines diversion any time soon too  Less mileage for you on your trips to London now mind ;)

378/2s on the NLL isn't a bad shout, as at least at Willesden if you see ones you need on the Watford DC lines you can always go downstairs and go for them :)

As always a very good read!

I was also thinking around Highbury as I can catch any required 378/2s if they appear on ELL services (and keep an eye out for 378153), but they will have to wait for another day once I can get to London on a Sunday which doesn't involve a magical bus.

27th February – FOSS Day 1

Back from China, feeling a bit tired from jet-lag, but I wanted to get back moving, with a little aim of trying to clear various units between Newport & Cardiff, and also to get onto the ATW loco-hauled Gerald premier service. Bit of a late start (compared to normal) with boarding the 10:07 departure from Grateley towards Salisbury, something of a special service as it formed the 8:20 arrival into Waterloo. Leading was 159018, 159107 was the 2nd unit, 158886 was unit number 3 and 158888 was bringing up the rear, a 10-car sprinter (although the rear 158 was locked out of use due to short platforms at Whitchurch & Overton).

Arrival into Salisbury, where I soon handed over some RTV from East coast and a crisp £5 to the ticket-office in exchange for my Freedom of Severn & Solent 3 in 7. First service northbound was running around 10 minutes late and was formed of 158953, which I stayed on until Trowbridge as I had the potential of 2 winners heading southbound towards Westbury before a SWT service caught up, first was a 153 from Swindon, it was a dud, second was a service towards Weymouth… it was a 2-car 158, dud. Crossing over the platform (is that a new waiting shelter I see being built?) as the SWT service was running 10 or so minutes late. Formed of 159002 it took me towards Bath Spa.

Alighted at Bath to await the HST towards Bristol Temple Meads and it was double duds, 43156 leading with 43091 behind for the short trip to Bristol Temple. Quick look at RTT for the next northbound service highlighted a cross country service heading towards New Street & Beyond, and when it pulled in I noticed it was required 221129, so using my Voyager rule (see a required Voyager, try and do it as you never know where it will next pop up), I hopped on for the short trip to Bristol Parkway. At Parkway I went across to the other platform to await a HST, formed of dud 43155 leading winner power car 43041, which took me to Newport giving me some HST tunnel action.

Newport and time for some lunch from the WH Smiths as I waited, a 158/9 arrived and departed, a 175/1 arrived and departed. Both were duds, a 175/0 arrived on platform 1, which was required 175006, so across to platform 1, via the magical bridge to board the unit on route to Cardiff Central. Across to the P1/P2 Island to see what units were heading back towards Newport saw me on a FGW stopper to Taunton, formed of winners 150263 & 153329. Back to Newport (and the Cardiff-Newport run is quite boring after a while, but getting some dog-box action was nice). Next service back towards Cardiff was another winning 175/0, 175011, which did an emergency stop mid-way back to Cardiff Central as someone hit the passenger alarm.

5 minutes later the unit restarted, lovely smell of brakes and to Cardiff, across to the eastbound platforms, next required unit which popped up was a XC service bound to Nottingham, formed of winner 170637, so back to Newport. Crossing over from P4 to P2 saw ATW 158834 pull in; a quick check with my phone saw it was required, so another winner in the bag. Back to Caerdydd Canolog for another long walk from platform 3a to P1/P2, the unit waiting on P2 was a dud, so I was waiting for the HST to pull in; leading was dud power car 43063 with required 43079 on the rear to take me back to the wonderful Casnewydd, or Newport for English speakers.

A FGW service from Taunton was the next required units, with 150124 leading and 150216 behind, back to Cardiff, and back out to Newport on required 175002 for a final time, without wanting to risk a 2 minute connection at Cardiff I had to get onto the next Cardiff bound service, formed of dud 175105, so back to Cardiff, after visiting the shop for a quick meal-deal, I headed back to the P1/P2 to await a certain service, pulled today by 67029 (with DVT 82307 at the rear), I would have imagined it would be longer than 4 coaches, with the rear coach branded First Class, quite a busy service from Cardiff which got busier after Newport with the number of passengers wanting to board once I had alighted.

Time to head back to England, and the next service back to England was required 43128 (with dud 43163 on the rear), taking me back to Swindon, where I had a plan to connect up with the Cheltenham to Southampton service which connects nicely up with a Waterloo service at Salisbury (as annoyingly the services towards Portsmouth arrive into Salisbury around 5 minutes after the Waterloo services depart, so saves a 55 minute wait). I decided to take winners 43187/43142 for the short hop to my 1st new station of the weekend at Chippenham, quite chipper, island platform with a disused side platform with the main ticket office. 10 minutes or so later 158887 (today pretending to be a FGW unit) arrived, so as usual I sat in the First Class section to give my phone a quick charge for the nice trip down the Transwilts via Melksham, usual crew swap at Westbury, and down to Salisbury.

Usually the ~ 20:24 departure towards Waterloo from Exeter arrives as a double unit, with the rear 159 detaching and only the front unit continuing up to Waterloo, however it was only a single unit from Exeter with the passengers being made to transfer at Salisbury to 159010, which was nice as I was already on board keeping warm and reading a book for the short trip back to Grateley ready for the walk home.

I can see why you got bored of Cardiff to Newport, but at least you got tons of stuff in the book :)

Can't believe 67029 is STILL on the WAG-Ex!

Must have been quite strange having 4 DMUs on one service with SWT!

It also sounds like you're doing rather well with FGW power cars!

It's the busiest service (owing to the arrival time of 8:20), when I have caught it a few years ago for a course in London, it is pretty much standing room only from Andover. 10 cars is the limit for Salisbury, Grateley & Andover.

28th February – FOSS Day 2

Slightly later than normal Saturday start for me, but with no real plan in mind as I drove to Salisbury station, to think where I will end up, 20 or so minutes ponder at Salisbury where a Portsmouth bound 158/9 arrived and departed as a late running Cardiff service formed of 158951 decided to arrive (having got stuck behind a late running Southampton bound stopper after Fareham), so I bored, found a seat for the short journey for my 1st new station of the day in the shape of Warminster, with a bus stop outside which thinks it’s in London (see the picture below).

5 or so minutes later a quiet looking 158959 arrived on a Salisbury – Worcester service where it arrived into Westbury P3 where I spotted a familiar looking 158/9 on P2, one which I alighted from a mere 10 minutes ago, looking like it was going no-where, neither was 158959 going anywhere fast, the line was closed at Bath Spa following a bridge strike, quick check of RTT saw a couple options, either the Swindon service or a HST down to Taunton and head up towards Bristol. My decision was made when I saw required 153382 roll into P1. Quickly grabbing a seat before it was announced that no-trains were heading towards Bath so get on board the Swindon service. Rather full on departing Westbury the dog-box was, standing room only after Trowbridge, and Chippenham was just crazy, first Swindon bound service for an hour (2x HSTs delayed) so it was the “how many people can fit onto a 153” challenge, answer is a lot. 5 minutes late and leaving people behind, the service eventually reached Swindon.

The next Swansea bound service was running 20 minutes late, and the crowds were building, leading was dud 43036 but with required 43189 behind I jumped on board and managed to get a seat for the busy ride towards Bristol Parkway, to get some high-speed action. At Bristol Parkway I was waiting for any required units, of any type, couple dud voyagers arrived and departed, a non-required 150 arrived from Western Super Mere, before required 43025 arrived with required 43171 behind arrived on a Paddington bound service, 2 power-cars for the price of one, happy days. Across the platform at the boundary of Swindon to see what was next up, dud 43003 rolled in on a Bristol service with required 43186 behind so it was on board for the short hop to Chippenham (after checking RTT first to see what the connection was like at Chippenham, thankfully it suggested a 5 minute wait until another service was due back towards Swindon).

Next up was required 43168 with winner 43097 on the back, excellent, back to Swindon where my run of winners came to an end as I hit the station around a dead time, next HST departure west wasn’t for 25+ minutes, so I found myself onto dud 150263 heading towards Cheltenham Spa to see the Golden Valley line, all freshly redoubled. It was late arriving into Gloucester (2nd new station of the day) so I missed the XC connection towards Cardiff, also the HST back towards Swindon. 10 minute wait before an ATW service rolled in on a Gloucester to Fishguard service, formed of dud 158834, I decided to board as I wanted to re-do the Gloucester – Newport line, as it is quite pretty in places where it runs alongside the river (and gave me a chance to give my phone a quick charge). Changing at Severn Tunnel Junction, for the first time since June last year, and it is still bleak and awful as ever. Waiting for a Taunton bound service in the hope of scoring some 150 tunnel thrash.

Sadly it was a single busy unit (was hoping for a double set) and dud 150106, almost managed to catch a certain westbound service at Patchway which calls at a particular station between Patchway and Severn Tunnel Junction, but it will have to wait to be semi-planned. To Filton Abbey Wood and across the world’s longest footbridge to the island platforms 2/3 to await the next service heading towards Parkway, and I was in luck, it was winner 150104 (heading towards Gloucester I believe). Not the longest of trips, but back at Parkway for another “I will get on whatever pulls in and is required”. A dud 221 arrived heading south, a dud 220 arrived heading north, required 43141 (with dud 43070) arrived heading towards London, so it was back towards Swindon for me.

At Swindon, I got onto fresh duds 43097/43168 back to Parkway, at least it gives those 2 power-cars a few extra miles. Next departure was a Western-super-Mere bound service formed of winner 150247 so I jumped on for a short trip to Filton Abbey Wood, across the bridge to see the next service towards Cardiff (checking RTT saw a connection with a Taunton bound service at Patchway), and it was winner 150248, for the even shorter distance to Patchway. Across the bridge to await the Taunton train, and it was dud 150249. 47-48-49 in a roll, what were the odds of that happening I thought as I headed back to Filton, the new IEP depot looks like it’s coming along well. Next service northbound was in the hands of winner 150202 to take me to Parkway, for some more Parkway pondering.

My pondering didn’t last for long as required 220004 pulled in on a Bristol service, and employing the “Voyager” rule as I had no idea when the next time I might run into 220004 might be, I boarded for the hop to Bristol Temple Meads. Sadly I didn’t manage to catch a Paddington bound HST as the XC stopped outside the station for 5 minutes, so it was a short wait before dud 158955 arrived heading towards Portsmouth, I was tired and had enough travelling for the day so I stayed on bound for the 52 mile journey back to Salisbury, for a quick drive home.

New units scored today: 7x 43s, 4x 150, 1x 153, and 1x 220, so an interesting day.

1st March – FOSS Day 3

The aim of today was to get the rare track in Cardiff on the diversion between Cardiff Central and Grangetown which went via a reversal in Ninian Park. First step of the day was a nice little drive to Romsey to catch the 8:36-odd service to Romsey via Southampton Central (I swear those PIS used to say “Chandlers Ford via Southampton Central”) [see picture]. Anyways, as all SWT 158s are cleared it was going to be dud, and it was the return of 158887, not pretending to be a FGW unit today (like it was on Friday)

Nice short trip to Southampton where I had around an hour or so to kill before the first Cardiff bound service (which I didn’t want to miss as the next service would be 2 hours later), would 444017 be nice and pop up heading to Waterloo or on a stopper towards Bournemouth? First couple 444s spotted were not 017, until I noticed the XC service from Southampton to Banbury pull in and noticed the number was required 220027, damn that Voyager rule, but another 220 cleared for the 4 mile 33 chain trip to Southampton Airport (Parkway) (can’t forget the brackets for parkway). Across the bridge and I was limited in options, get onto the service towards Southampton Central with a 20-odd minute wait or risk a 2 minute connection to score a new station?

444019 pulled in, and after checking RTT saw the FGW service 2 minutes down and the SWT service back towards Waterloo on time, decided it was worth the risk, so stayed on until the next station of Totton, my only new station of the day. Across the footbridge, for a couple minute wait before 444038 pulled in, damn you wee 444017 I shall catch you one of these days, to take me back to Southampton Central with a mad manic dash across the bridge to see that the FGW service had managed to drop another couple minutes, so no need to rush whatsoever.

This train is formed of 5 carriages, customers for blah de blah should join the front coach only, potential of a winning 150 (and some additional 150 tunnel blast, great sound hearing those engines roar when under water with the window open), sadly it was not a winner as it was 150249 from Saturday (at least the full Southampton to Cardiff run would push this 150 high up my FGW 150 mileage list. Techniquests favourite 158/9 was behind (158960) and to make a chance I got a nice table seat in the 150, to read more of my boring HR book. Unit got rather busy after Trowbridge but emptied out at Bath where the race was already underway. Onwards to Cardiff with the reversal at Temple Meads, and managed to arrive into Cardiff a few minutes early, which gave me enough time to make a dash to the TVMs to purchase my Cardiff Central to Grangetown return and get back to P4 to catch an earlier train than I had planned.

Brucie bonus time as it was a winner as well, 150279, heading towards Barry Island, and set off towards Ninian Park, the train reversing and heading out towards Grangetown, lots of various units in the depot, and I alighted at Grangetown and went down to see if there was anything of interest in the local area, as I was getting hungry, apart from a little “premier” convenience store whose selection of sandwiches made the Woking Budgens look massive, I was back to the station, well hiding on the stairs away from the choppy wind. My luck didn’t last and dud 150267 arrived to take me back to Central. I noticed sitting on P2 XC 170397 on a Birmingham New Street service, a required 170 so I made a note, a Manchester bound service was due to depart unusually from P0, so I was going to see if that was required and change [well I would have to anyway] at Newport and link up with the 170 for a nice trip towards Gloucester or Cheltenham Spa, depending what RTT says.

A few minutes before departure required 175009 rolled in, and was quite busy from the word go, for the short 11 mile trip to Newport. Crossing over to P2, and 170397 arrived, and I managed to find a nice table seat on the right hand side, perfect for views of the Severn Bridge and the river. RTT suggested nothing was to be gained from changing at Gloucester, the next service from Gloucester being a FGW towards Swindon, which could be connected with at Cheltenham, so to Cheltenham, having just missed a double Voyager (something I haven’t had on XC), gave me a wait, annoyingly a required XC HST set arrived heading northbound, out of the limit as the next stop would be New Street. The FGW was a dud, the XC 170 was a dud, and I was pondering when required 220009 arrived on route to Bristol, a quick check of RTT gave me a 4-odd minute connection with a Portsmouth bound service, so it was time for Voyager action passing Parkway and arriving into Temple Meads, I was ready for the door to make a connection, thankfully the platform changed from what RTT suggested and it pulled into the platform opposite the FGW service, so no subway dash.

158955 was the unit in question for the 69 mile trip, I shouldn’t have rushed though, as the guard announced it was being held at the station due to a broken down HST at Bath Spa which was trying to be fixed, and we were the 4th in the queue to depart towards Bath Spa (SWT service, another HST & a Weymouth bound stopper?) The guard kept us upto date and got caught when making an announcement that another HST would be departing before us, so there would be a *whistle in background* no we are off now” 25 odd minutes down, managed to get back some of the lost time, but arrival into Romsey was around 20 minutes late. Arrival into a station with 5 policemen on the platform, another couple blocking the north exit, for a couple youths being met, 3 cars outside with a little van, with more policemen blocking the exits, must have been something serious.

Anyways, nice trip back home, the end of a quick day trip to Cardiff to score some rare track, plus some additional winners :)

I wonder if Oyster is accepted on this bus stop, especially with the Imber special?

7th March – The Scottish Weekender

The day begins, with me standing at a cold London Fields (1st new station of the day) at 5:10 in the morning awaiting a service to take me to Hackney Downs, watching various empty stock movements and Stansted Express services. It actually began 30 minutes earlier with checking out of the guesthouse near Homerton station in Hackney, with a 25 minute walk through the streets of Hackney as I had the choice of either walking to Hackney Downs or London Fields. I decided London Fields for the chance to scoring a new station and another potential required 315 or 317.

Back to London Fields, a station I personally wouldn’t like to be standing around for long, the time has come and in comes rolling what appears to be a 315, yes it is a 315, and a required 315 to boot, 315858. Shame it wasn’t a 317 as I could have make use of the toilet at this point. Short trip to Hackney Downs where I had a brief look outside, noticing the new ticket gates, before heading back towards the island platform, which confused a passenger as “Enfield trains always depart from P4, so why is it saying P2, I don’t believe you” and headed to P4 (only to ignore the Enfield bound service).

You might be asking why I would be hanging around Hackney at 5:38 on a Saturday morning waiting for an Enfield bound service. Very good question, as it is the 5:30 departure from Liverpool Street which makes use of 2 curves which otherwise are not used by passenger services on a regular service, formed of 315829 (another required 315 for a bonus), it set off towards Tottenham Hale only to dive off to the left before the station and onto the GOBLIN line, going past South Tottenham slowly before heading right and back onto the main line just before Seven Sisters where I alighted, and touched out with the Oyster. PSUL movement over the South Tottenham curves complete :)

After a 15 minute wait around Seven Sisters, picking up a bottle of juice from a little shop, I headed back to the station, tapping in with Oyster for the Victoria line trip to Euston. I was booked onto the 7:43 departure; I was at Euston for 6:23, an hour to kill before the platform was officially announced, an hour to kill at Euston, what fun, so after buying a light breakfast from Sainsburys, a newspaper from WH Smiths, I sat down in the waiting room and relaxed.

7:20 rolled around and I went towards the top of the stairs for P5, where RTT was saying the train would depart from, making sure I had £15 in my pocket, as I was booked into coach D, Voyager would be better as the seats in Coach D are better than A to C, 390 then I would jump into First Class and pay the weekend first upgrade, for a 5 and a half hour trip (going via Birmingham), it would be worth it for the extra legroom, bigger seat, free drinks & a view. Service was announced and I was down the ramp, passing the human gate line, and onto winner 390155 “Days of Future Past” and straight into the FC coaches. Half the seats were reserved, but I found myself an “available” single seat and make myself comfortable (after visiting the loo). My £15 on the table ready to give to the train manager if he comes through to check tickets, although sadly the free drinks were limited as there was no at-seat service due to a member of staff being unavailable, if you wanted the free coffee/tea/water you needed to do the long walk to the shop.

The snack boxes were rolled out before departure, and the train manager came through soon after to check tickets and collect upgrade monies, kicking a couple out who didn’t “realise” it was First Class. After Birmingham another member of staff came on board with drinks run before alighting at Crewe, where it looked like a Manager of some description came on board with another snack box run, filling up the little fridge with bottles of water and leaving the boxes on the top. All the time the member of staff in the shop was apologising for the lack of at seat service on today’s trip (but you won’t get that on East Coast). Nice relaxing journey, over the interesting part of the WCML, and before I knew it the train was pulling into Glasgow Central 10 or so minutes ahead of schedule.

Doing the long walk at Central onto the concourse, and to the ticket office to purchase my Roundabout ticket (produced as a “single” ticket) and with a short wait as I was heading over towards the lower-level platforms where I spotted a 156 getting ready to depart in a couple minutes, and checking my phone saw it was required 156449, so I jumped on (after checking RTT for connections back, saw a change at Pollokshaws West with a 2 minute and 12 minute connection), tickets checked pretty much straight away, and arrived at Crossmyloaf, before my 2nd new station of the day in the shape of Pollokshaws West. Quick walk down the stairs into the subway and up the stairs to the “up” platform, next train was in 2 minutes but the one after was coming up as “delayed”, which didn’t look good, so change of plan, and onto the 1st service formed of dudtastic 156494 (A trip to Scotland isn’t complete with 156494 popping up at some point) for the trip back to Central.

Buying lunch from WH Smiths and I headed to the Low-Level platforms to await the next service towards Partick, with my required list for both 318s & 320s being quite long the odds were in my favour…

….and a dud unit tipped up, so I gave that a miss and was rewarded with winner 318257 for the 2 mile hop to Partick (got to be careful not to call it Patrick), still with time to kill before check-in opens at 14:30 (as I wanted to ditch stuff from my bag and check-in early so I didn’t have to worry about doing it later on), next service towards the West was a 320, a winner 320, 320312, for my 3rd new station of the day in the shape of Hyndland, nice island platform, which is always a bonus for unit bashing (allows you to see what be coming in both directions). A dud 334 arrived on a fast Edinburgh service, but I held back and waited for the next service on a ‘slow’ Edinburgh service [going by the number of station calls] and was given winner 334011, back to Partick, down the stairs to hand over my Roundabout to get given an “all-day” ticket for the Glasgow Subway.

Down to the “outer” platform with a couple minute wait before a Subway unit pulled in for the short journey to Kelvinbridge (my 2nd Glasgow Subway station). Phone out to give me directions to the guest house and I arrived pretty much at 14:35 to the surprise of the owner as he hadn’t quite finished the prep (needed hovering), so emptying my bag of clothes, books & magazine, I departed the guest house and back down the slight hill, making note of many takeaway shops and a Co-Op which would be useful in the evening for dinner. To the “inner” platform at the work-site of Kelvinbridge and back to Partick, with a spring in my step, as I headed to the “westbound” platform to see what next was heading to Hyndland.

Noticing an old station site along the route, and a rusty looking loop at Hyndland to the north, out on 318262, back in on 320321/318266, out on 320313, back in with 334029, out again on 318254 and back towards Partick on 334004 with a bit of gap for the next westbound service (all those units are winners), next eastbound service was required 334040 which I stayed on for the short hop to Charing Cross (Glasgow), and I had forgotten from my last Glasgow trip in May how long the stairs are and how unwelcoming the platforms are (half covered in a tunnel, other half in a cutting with another tunnel at the end). To Partick on winner 334005, before diving over for dud 318254 back to Glasgow Central with a bit of a mad fast walk to jump onto the Newton service a few seconds before the doors were closing.

Back in May the only part of regular passenger service track uncovered (so excluding PSUL movements) was the curves used by the Central to Newton via Crosshill services (had the line between Central and Newton via Shawlands, but as the Crosshill also employs the use of a dive under back onto the main Cathcart circle. Staying on board until the 2nd to last station for another new station at Kirkhill, which unlike most of the other stations on the Cathcart series isn’t an island platform. Dud 314207 departed towards Newton and reappeared a few minutes later working an inbound service (looking at RTT suggest Central to Newton via Crosshill is used by the same unit all day long as the inbound at Central forms the next outbound), but I was going to ditch it at Queens Park (Glasgow) [would be a long trip on a toiletless unit to the other Queen’s Park station]. 5 or so minute wait before the next service arrived heading towards Neilston, and it was a winner, 314205, and this one I stayed on until Mount Florida.

314211 took me back into Glasgow Central, where I checked RTT for anything heading out towards Paisley Gilmour Street, for any 380s, first up was winner 380113 for the short hop to Paisley, next Glasgow bound service was a dud 380/0 so I stayed for the following service which thankfully was a winner, 380106 (I think the next time I do a roundabout I will try and cover the 380s). RTT time again for 314 action, and gave me an anti-clockwise Cathcart circle service which was winner 314204 for another new station at Langside, a service from Newton (via Langside) was next up with 314203 taking me to Polloshields West. Taking a moment to look at the TVM for the “top” tickets, with a surprise with “IBM Halt” being a top ticket, loophole ticket or do many people from Langside travel to the former IBM works at Valley Park?

Pollosheields West seems to be a station in a cutting, access by a footbridge between housing estates; at least it gave me a good chance to take a picture of the station, and of winner 314215 arriving, which I decided to stay on until Newton. Next Central bound service from Newton [not the 314] was cancelled, which messed up a rough plan of station attacking, with a concert being held at the exhibition centre I decided that station would have to wait. Dud 318262 took me to Glasgow Central, where it was busy and it departed a few minutes late full and standing (concert goers), and dud 320317 arrived to take me to Argyle Street. Across the island to quickly board dud 320314, less passengers boarding at Central, but staying in the front car worked as it was less busy as I alighted at Anderston. Back towards Central on unexpected winner 318252, where I linked up with winner 318269 towards Hyndland, boarding at the front where it was quieter (but still departed late, where the train emptied out at Exhibition Centre for Mr Noel ‘Gallacher’ [as the PIS were saying].

Time was getting on and back at Hyndland after a couple duds I boarded duds 320309/320322 for the short trip back to Partick, but was rewarded with winner 320318 back out to Hyndland and a quick dive across the platform with 320305 back into Partick. I decided to stick around to see what the next service towards Queen Street, winner 334002, to Queen Street. It was getting down to that time where the services were being reduced to a half hourly service, so I was going to board for my final unit of the evening, and it was dud 334011 back to Partick, down to the subway for the trip to Kelvinbridge and back towards the guest house via an independent takeaway (and the Co-Op to pick up another bottle of water for the following day). Once eaten to the guesthouse to relax and sleep. I had another mile long walk in the morning (Glasgow Subway doesn’t open until 10am).

Result of today:
1 x 156; 5 x 314; 2 x 315; 5 x 318; 5 x 320; 6 x 334, 2 x 380, 1 x 390

8th March – A Scottish Weekender Day 2

20 minutes walking, after departing the guest house I arrived onto a familiar road from May, Charing Cross, with the little guest house on the hill, so I could put my phone away and use my memory for the walk to Charing Cross station, purchasing a single ticket to Edinburgh and down to the platform. I had a couple options; either I could stay on the 334 stopper all the way to Waverley, or ditch it at Queen Street and take a service via Falkirk High. The DMU won the day, the 334 fast service is good, the stopper would be “We are now approaching so-and-so, this train is for Edinburgh Waverley, next station blah”, so for some peace I headed to high level after winner 334010 took me to low-level.

15 or so minutes I had spare, the train hadn’t been announced (although there was a double 170 sitting on P6 which I thinking it might have been), a single 156 on a Anniesland service and a 158/170 combo which might have also had another 158 attached to the rear towards Aberdeen, were the only other services departing, so I headed to the little Sainsburys for a quick sausage roll. A double 170 rolled into P5 from Glasgow and it was going to be the 9:30 departure, dud 170426 was leading with winner 170424 at the rear. The catering trolley was located in 426 (and I assume the guard was located in the rear unit as unusually for a Scotrail service there was no ticket check).

Into Waverley station, which is one of the most confusing stations for platform numbering, the service didn’t go into one of the west bay platforms, so a bit quicker to head to the ticket office to pick up a weekly season ticket between Waverley & Haymarket (making use of my photo card for my other season ticket). I then spent the day doing the slightly boring run between Waverley and Haymarket, required unit searching, and in a couple cases getting back on board a known dud if there was no required unit departing for 20-odd minutes.

Winner 158789 was up first, and it had an odd ‘first class’ section, 2+1 seating (I put first class, but as it was working a Central to Edinburgh via Shotts it doesn’t have first class). Waverley on required 158704 with dud 170478 behind, with Virgin WC providing the units for the next Haymarket run with a pair of Voyagers, winners 221112 & 221107 (always seems to wasteful to have Voyagers on the Euston to Scotland services which run under the wires, couldn’t Virgin magic up additional 390s to release some 221s for another TOC?). Winner 170422 (with dud 170402) back to Waverley and as there was no required units departing within 20 minutes they took me back out to Haymarket.

Winners 158726/158740 took me to Waverley after a bit of a wait at Haymarket (a 334 had broken down somewhere), next up was dud 170395 leading winner 158702 for the 1 mile 19 chain journey, and another pair of 158s back, with winner 158738 leading and dud 158727 behind. Next movement was going to be on a pair of 350s; technically pick-up/set-down only at Haymarket, but the chance of someone checking the tickets on the short trip was remote. Dud 350406 was leading with winner 350408 on the rear.

To Waverley again with another pair of lovely winning 158s, with 158739/158712, and back out with winner 170475. Slight dash over the platform and I was on winner 158721 leading dud 158871 back to Waverley, to hit at a time where the next 158s/170s were duds, so I went across to a dud 220033 (to clear a 220 over that trip), back into Waverley on dud 334023, and back out on duds 170402/170422. Back to winners with 158870 to Waverley and 158728/170407 to Haymarket, I had noticed a pair of required 350s pulling into Edinburgh earlier which would form the next Manchester service so I jumped onto the next Edinburgh bound service which was dud 170455.

350401/350403 were the pair of 350/4s which I was after, and a quick dash across the platform saw me on my first Virgin East Coast service, with winner 43299 leading and 43238 behind, which led me to the next VTEC service heading towards Aberdeen, and a case of I should have checked the power cars before boarding a quite busy (standing room only in Coach E, although aisles were clear), I think it must have been the former East Midland Trains set, seats looked different and the signs were EMT style. Both power-cars were duds with 43302 leading and 43251 at the rear. Never mind. I had spotted a Virgin 390 arriving which was required, so it was next train at Haymarket, a dud 220014 from Glasgow Central.

Across to the VTWC service, formed of winner 390045, to break up the 170s/158s, but I hit Haymarket at a bad time, a couple duds before a break of 20 minutes, so I decided to board the last of the 2 duds (158738/158727) to see what was around Waverley waiting to depart. My eye caught a pair of 334s departing in the next couple minutes (there was a XC Glasgow service due around the same time, but I decided it wasn’t worth the risk of trying to get across the footbridge to whatever platform the XC was waiting, dud 334002 was leading winner 334008 (and annoyingly the XC was a required 221, although I doubt I would have made it as the 334 doors closed mere seconds after I had boarded. Double winners 158722/170421 took me back into Waverley where for another time I hit several duds for the next 20 minutes worth of departures, so decided to take the next set out to Haymarket.

Hence for the 4th time of the day I was on 170402/170422, out towards Haymarket (I think that set was on a Queen Street – Edinburgh diagram). Winner 158716 back to Waverley where the backlog of duds had begun to clear as I had my eye on 170429 which formed the next required unit service, and back in on 170396 which was a bonus to clear another 170/3. It was that time where a Manchester service was next up and after passing it in the tunnels between Haymarket/Waverley (when it was heading into Waverley) sounded like a diesel, so I wasn’t surprised when I spotted a pair of busy looking 185s, leading was required 185132 with dud 185140 behind. Although in all fairness I probably would have jumped on them anyhow to have a 185 on that route (as I’ve had, 43, 67 90, 91, 156, 158, 170, 220, 221, 185, 350, 380, 390, so I think I’ve managed to cover it on most DMU/EMU/Loco which runs between the two, until the new sleeper comes on with 92s & 47/73s).

Time for some more VTEC action with required 43307 leading a set with dud 43274 on the rear, back for the final time on duds 43311/43320, before my final “First Scotrail” service with winner 170401. My first VTEC 91 to give some decent distance was led by new DVT 82230 with required 91121 on the rear for a peaceful if not bouncy journey down the East Coast. The Mk4 coaches do not ride as well as 390s, darkness had fallen after Newcastle, and apart from a stop around Retford, it seemed to missed the worst of the signalling issues at Kings Cross (Hull Trains service departing 40-odd minutes late) and arrived pretty much bang on time.

Across to Victoria on the Victoria line, for no reason other than I wanted to try and get a required 377, and was successful dud 377451 was leading winner 377118 (unusual in having 2+2 seating throughout the train?), towards Clapham. Mad dash towards P9 only to be told that P9 was closed and all services were from P11 currently, so back to P11 to get onto a Haslemere bound service, with winner 450122 leading dud 450126, to Woking with 15 odd minutes spare before a Basingstoke stopper was due (and fastest service to Basingstoke) so a quick dash to Subway for a late night dinner, and back in time for the Basingstoke/Alton train, Basingstoke part was dud 450555, and carried on for the short 23 mile trip to Basingstoke.

Due to engineering works around Andover, the Salisbury services were being diverted via Southampton, with a magic bus for Overton/Whitchurch/Andover/Grateley that time of night, to RTT the bus was due to leave around 30 minutes before I had got back to Basingstoke, even going the ‘back’ way home [via Overton/Whitchurch as the M3/A303 is boring that time of night], I managed to meet the bus at Grateley (I passed it heading towards the station as I was on the final couple hundred metres).

Anyways, a successful day in Scotland, many new units ticked off

I agree with you about London Fields station, absolutely awful during daylight so I dread to think what it's like at 5am!

It does have free wi-fi though.

I do hope the arrival of the Overground to this station will see a vast improvement.

I did see posters from a community group (with London Fields and Cambridge Heath?) saying that London Overground was going to be a 4 trains an hour frequency on a Sunday instead of the 2 trains an hour currently.

I would imagine the stations which will be taken over by London Overground (and Crossrail) will see massive improvements to make them more safe and friendly.

At least it's more friendly than Charing Cross in Glasgow (half in tunnel, half in cutting) or Severn Tunnel Junction.

Wow you've been busy typing lately! Just caught up to date, loved your referencing my final FGW 158 to get (before yet more renumbering, no doubt, in the future lol) with 158960

Confirmed 158789 is a former SWT 158 (same for 158786, FYI), been a long time since it was down your way though!

A very busy time had there, and extremely productive too. How much is that weekly season for EDB-HYM, out of curiosity? I have no intention to do one any time dead soon, but might be interesting to consider doing one day.

Someone else who's got 350408, fishquinn of this forum also had it not long ago. I really need to get onto TPX, which I think has been provisionally planned for June.

Just caught up on a few of these - think you're the most prolific daytripper on the forum!

Good days out all round, jealous of that ATW 67 trip for sure. Not so much the hanging around London Fields at 5am...

First class weekend service on VT sounds rubbish compared to the weekday offering, but then it is only £15...

Normally you do get at seat service with drinks, no sandwiches like on east coast. But for a 5 and a bit hour journey it was worth it for the extra legroom & solo seat (which lined up with the window).

Just over 14 minutes from getting off the charter at kings cross to boarding a SWT service at Waterloo :)

Although I can do better if the bakerloo connection was good. Enjoyable day with some new red track covered.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
14th March – A Railtour Trip to Buxton

I’m looking at my train trips log and I can’t believe it’s been nearly 2 months I caught the 5:27 departure from Grateley on a Saturday morning, although thankfully not as early of a start as last Saturday’s walk to do the South Tottenham curves, I decided to be a lazy sod and drive to the station for the half-mile trip to save a bit of a fast walk, as I didn’t really want to miss this service as it connected up with the 7:38 start of the tour from Kings Cross [5:59 would have been a bit tight]. The rather empty (bar another passenger boarding at Grateley and another couple passengers asleep) 159001 rolled in, quiet journey picking up a few passengers at Basingstoke and Woking, and onwards to Clapham Junction arriving a couple minutes down.

As I was on the SWT £15 special offer tickets, Southern to Victoria was out, so I decided checking RTT found a couple services towards Vauxhall on the Windsor lines side, so down the subway and out to see a pair of shiny blue 458/5s roll in, leading was semi-winner 458520 (semi as I’ve had it previously when it was 458020, first converted 458/5 for me) and winner 458534 on the rear. Sitting in the former 458020 and the 2+2 seats are very nice, good to see the ex-First Class seats remaining in place [I wonder if the plug-sockets have also been left in place], onwards to Vauxhall, or as 458520 was calling it, Queenstown Road.

Down to the underground, making the mistake of putting my ticket into the gate thinking that it had further validity to Waterloo, gates said no and ate it, evil gates, and down the underground which was a bit chaotic with nothing heading south, and a 5 minute wait for a northbound service, for a quick ride to Kings Cross St Pancras. Exiting the station and spotting a pair of 321s on a Peterborough bound service on P8, I went towards the little WH Smiths to pick up a light breakfast and a newspaper, before finding the tour train sitting on P1, today I was in coach F, and as per usual UK Railtours has given me a backwards (on departure) aisle seat, and in the coach was the buffet (I wouldn’t like to have sat in that bay of seats which had a cupboard on the other side) (and overhearing had no hot water as the boiler had no gas, riots would be had if passengers couldn’t have tea/coffee!).

Anyways leading was 66177 with 66019 on the rear and it set off on time heading up the East Coast main line, first time I think I’ve travelled up on the slow track, pick up at Potters Bar, Stevenage & Peterborough, nice peaceful trip up, stopping at Welwyn just before the viaduct forces the track down to 2 tracks, I don’t think I’ve ever done that flyover at Welwyn Garden City (I’m assuming used by the 313 stoppers from Welwyn, maybe a job for a Sunday). Arriving into P4 of Peterborough so some passengers were happy at scoring the crossovers from the main-line to the line towards Leicester, nice run towards the sharp curve at Syston East to Syston North (I would say new track, but I managed it back in September on a PSUL movement), and onto the Midland Main Line, again first time I think for me on the slows, running non-stop past the might of Loughborough, before leaving the main-line for the first new track for me as the train took the flyover into Toton depot, where a stop was due for a crew change before it set off again, leaving Toton (seemed to be depot-like, various locos (60s, 66, 67 around) and back to passenger track at Trowell Junction and onwards onto the Erewash Valley line, passing Langley Mill & Alferton and coming onto the Midland Main Line south of Chesterfield, around 10 minutes early, where we stopped south of the crossovers from the Erewash to the main-line, for around 20 minutes, 10 minutes booked time, HSTs, 220s, 222s movements.

Away again on time through Chesterfield station, and reaching the Dore junction, where the train turned off the main-line using the freight curve to the Hope Valley line (another piece of red track to be highlighted), and continued along the beautiful Hope Valley line, into the longest tunnel in England which isn’t in London and turning away from the Hope Valley after Chinley towards New Mills Central, a couple signalling stops around Marple, and turning right onto the Hyde branch, what a mess with rubbish on the embankments. Another couple stops at the Hyde junction for a 323, and before Guide Bridge for a TPE, the service set off again underneath the wires, passing Fairfield, Gorton & Ashburys with another brief wait before turning right onto the freight only branch towards the Manchester – Huddersfield line. Again do the people of Manchester have any sense of pride, the embankment was full of rubbish, black bags, washing machines, cupboards, trolleys, nice to see a different part of Manchester, seeing the former Commonwealth Games stadium.

Brief wait before coming onto the Huddersfield line at Philips Park South, carrying on for just under 4 miles before another turn onto another freight branch at Ashton Moss junction, going back over the Glossop line and reaching the world famous Denton line at Denton junction, having to wait for one of the numerous passenger trains was so annoying. Heading south passing Denton before Reddish South, both stations looking bleaker than they did in December, and onto the Stockport line, passing Stockport and leaving the main-line and onto the Buxton line, carrying underneath the little used wires until Hazel Grove (is it one or two 323 services a day which reach Hazel Grove?), the fast line towards New Mills leaves and the train starts on the twistly hilly Buxton line, reaching the “highest market town in England” a few minutes early. On P1 was a double 150 getting ready to depart in a few minutes, I think a few passengers jumped on that service.

3 hours we had in Buxton, it is a nice town, but that wind was horrible, a ‘lazy’ wind as my Gran would say, cuts straight into you (plus wearing a new coat as my previous black lightweight waterproof warm coat has had to be binned due to the zip deciding it would rather become a banana, which isn’t that warm), but I survived (lucky I had my weetabix). Anyways back to the station, a pair of 156s arrived and departed, but another pair of 150s arrived, dropped off departed only to reappear a couple minutes later going into P1, the passengers waiting near the end of the platform spotted 66019 moving around before a few minutes later saw it reappear (the thinking was that the 2 locos swapped ends, otherwise 66177 would have done pretty much the full 450 mile round trip, excluding the movement from Buxton platform into the siding to be reversed), but no 66019 was at the front, with 66177 behind it dead in tow with a fault, however having another engine meant another coach was off the end of the platform, so more fun and a short walk passed the First Class area (seems to be a lot more First Class than standard class coaches on these tours), passed the kitchen and into the Standard class areas, and departed a few minutes late, being careful as it was carriage end first into “XYZ” sidings, of which X &Y were overgrown and out of use.

Departing the sidings and onto the Peak Forest track, following the A6, which used to be part of the “Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midland Junction” Railway, passing “Great Rocks Junction” and the site of the former Peak Forest station, passing the quarry and taking the South-East curve at Chinley, with a pair of lovely viaducts, brief pause onto the viaduct before coming back onto passenger line and back towards Hope, Chesterfield, the light failing after Totley Tunnel, down into Totton depot where the plan was for 66177 to be detached, and another loco to be attached to the rear. A couple false starts with the train moving forward a few hundred meters, making some passengers happy as it went onto a rarely used (for passenger services) goods line. 30 minutes later and 66098 was attached to the rear, and we finally departed Totton after waiting to be allowed out, and out of the depot via the southern way (not via the flyover) onto the Midland Main Line, so some extra new red track for me. Down the Midland Main Line in the slow London bound track, 46 odd minutes late, slowing right down to take the curve at Syston and back towards Peterborough going onto P3. Some passengers dived off and onto a waiting Virgin East Coast service from Peterborough to get back to Kings Cross quicker (seemed that other services were diverted via Lincoln). Managed to make back some of the time down to Kings Cross, arriving around 22:50.

I followed other passengers on the run into Kings Cross in moving forward, and I was out and making a quick walk to the underground, where I managed to get onto a Victoria line service to Oxford Circus, and Bakerloo (2 minute wait for service) to Waterloo, quick walk out of the station and found myself looking for 444017 or any other required 450s. First departure was the 22:15, and I was checking the number at around 23:05, making it just less than 15 minutes from Kings Cross to Waterloo, excellent. That 444 was dud, another 444 for Southampton was dud, a 458/0 set were duds (I think I have only 458022 left uncovered of the 458/0s which remain in service and haven’t gone to Doncaster), a pair of 450s on a Windsor & Eden Riverside were duds, but finding the Alton service unusually in P17, found dud 450107 on the rear, but required 450006 on the front, woohoo!.

I stayed on 450006 alighting (naughty me) at Clapham Junction after being chatted up by a quite drunk football supporter, with a short wait. I could have jumped onto 444018 heading to Southampton but that looked full, so I stayed and caught 159102, which was full and standing until Woking (should be pick-up only at Woking, force them all onto the stoppers I say *evil*), where I managed to get a seat for the relaxing trip back to Grateley, arriving around 01:00 and a quick drive home to ponder about a Pathfinder tour to Buxton which final pick-up is Worcester, mainly the route from Worcester to Stafford, and Stafford to Buxton, on bank holiday Monday, just to get some additional red track around Cheshire.

Anyways, some pretty pictures:

I will be doing a sort-of overall holiday report for China.

Probably a bit of exaggeration regarding Pencoed, but those platforms are far apart. I was hunting more for 150s than the pacers, as the 150s pop up all over the network (West Wales lines, Heart of Wales, North Wales) where the pacers tend to stick to Cardiff with the odd adventure out west.

I gave the rail replacement bus a 30 minute head-start from Basingstoke last night, I still managed to beat it back to Grateley (and that was me going the 'back' road via Overton/Whitchurch)
A Pacer runs between Maesteg and Cheltenham several times a day.

Thanks, didn't realise that ATW sends their pacers on the Cheltenham - Maesteg services as I've only ever seen 150s/158s on them.

As always, an excellent read! :)

That was fortunate that the delay didn't bowl you out really. I still need to do that track from Buxton to the Hope Valley, one day! You've also had the rather rare track from Ashburys West to Philips Park Junction now I see, I scored it on The Retro Shakespearean Tug in 2014 :)

I'd have gone crazy with no coffee available mind!

Wow, that's a fairly epic one-day trip. I need to do one of these tours, but they seem to all start in the South which is problematic!

They had hot water from the kitchen which they ran up in jugs for anybody wanting hot drinks on the way up. Although I guess if your a coffee drinker you bring your own coffee in a flask.

That bit around Manchester was a bonus as I would have imagined the tour going straight onto the Denton line after Guide Bridge, must have had a pathing issue with the many passenger trains using that line (or a freight more likely)

Would this be off interest for you to cover the Buxton to Hope Valley line via Peak Forest, picking up/setting down in Worcester?

As you never know when the next time Pathfinders/UKrailtours will do a trip to Buxton might be

Iskra, I believe UK Railtours tend to start in the south east, but look at Pathfinders as they have starting points over the country, although I wish they would remove the word "new" from their diary, losses its impact when majority of the tours are listed as "New", plus you have other companies (retro railtours) who start mostly from the 'north'.

Interesting but not certain if I can do that one, depends on work to be honest as still waiting to find out who's being allocated to what bank holidays this year. Most of us have requested our choices, but with 3 weeks to go until they begin we still haven't been told what ones we're doing. Bound to be plenty more Pathfinder/UKR tours to Buxton over the years, there normally are after all!

Is it just me or is East Midland Trains slow at releasing advances compared to other TOCs?

Just looking at getting back from Derby on the 6th June, tour drops off at around 19:50, which is a bit tight to risk the 20:00 departures (XC to Basingstoke, or EMT down to St Pancras), so I was looking at the 21:00 service (seems to suggest it takes 1 hour 50 from St Pancras to Waterloo). I guess it will be a waiting game.

6th of May? It might be worth contacting them on Twitter, they're usually quite good for replying to tweets in my experience.

6th June sorry.

Manchester this coming Saturday, RTT is suggesting the line is closed towards Salford so that limits my choices, seems to be some diversions of Victoria/Piccadilly - Southport services going towards the WCML [I'm assuming without checking my map against RTT the same way as the TPE 350s] and crossing over from the WCML to Wigan Wallgate somehow. My primary aim is to try and get my last 3 TPE 170s (302, 308, 309) on Piccadilly - Stalybridge runs, and try and get my last 3 TPE 350/4s (402, 407, 410), but there is a lot of things I can do so will probably decide on the day, depending what shows up in the 10 and a bit hours I've got there (10:07 arrival, 20:35 departure, sadly Virgin is kicking me off at Watford Junction onto a Southern to Clapham, less chance of a seat for the Salisbury train :()

Gives me something to look forward to after 5 days of chaos.

Advances should be out soon for 6th June, as I say get in touch with EMT and see if you can find out what's going on.

Sounds like you've got a good trip coming up, I've got my epic London bash next week and I'll be needing it after last week's chaos and no doubt more of it in the meantime!

Anyways, some pictures of subways in China (if anybody is interested, my initial ponders about the 3 systems are earlier on in the thread)

21st March – Greater Manchester Madness

Having managing to secure a pair of cheap advance tickets to/from Manchester for £18 each way, my plan was to go on a bit of unit hunting around the (Greater) Manchester area, although little did I know at the time of booking the lines towards Salford and west were closed (I’m guessing for electrisation works) so the idea of using Salford Crescent as a location to do units to/from Piccadilly/Victoria went out of the window. Knowing it was going to be one of the last times I had of trying to get my 3 remaining FTPE 170s in the book, they were high up on my wants.

Anyhow, the day begins, alarm clocks ringing, and for a quick walk to the station to wait around 7 minutes, another local passenger joined me for the 5:27 departure formed today of 159001, which was the same unit on the same service last Saturday, another 72 miles 49 chains to its total in my book, the guard was very friendly on this morning’s service and actually looked at the reservation part of my advance ticket (probably to check if it said Basingstoke or London Waterloo as the default Grateley to Manchester route is via a lovely 220/221 from Basingstoke). Soon rolled into Waterloo, after the semi traditional “we have arrived a tad early and are awaiting a platform to become available” wait, and with an hour and 15 minutes to spare, I went to the underground and out at Euston 15 or so minutes later, picking up a bite to eat & a newspaper, sat down to wait for 7:35 to roll around. Noticing that the Tring service had been cancelled, but didn’t pay too much attention, RTT suggested that the 8:00 departure was going to depart from P6 and was “at platform”.

7:35 rolled around and I packed my stuff up, and went up, to stand around the top of the entry ramp, 7:40 came and went (normal 20 minutes announcement), 7:45 rolled around but still no platform announcement, a passenger tried to do a runner passed the human gate line to get onto the train sitting on P6 and was soon caught, the gates closing, 7:50 rolled around, and soon did 7:55, I was thinking “something was happening”, before a very quiet voice (the PA system at Euston is crap) mentioned that due to a broken rail, the 8:00 departure to Manchester and 8:04 to Birmingham was cancelled, and passengers should wait for the 8:20 departure. Great, a good reserved seat gone, for a mad dash when the 8:20 was going to be announced. Checked RTT saw it was down to depart from P12, but the train which was due to form that service was delayed by around 40 minutes. Thinking along the lines of “the only units currently in the station are on the P1-P7 side”, I went back towards P6. The Birmingham service was announced and there was a mad rush, 8:20 came and went before the service being announced as P6 at around 8:22. Mad rush, jumping on to get a decent table seat in coach U on dud 390132, which soon filled up as the 8:40 departure was announced as being cancelled so 3 early morning Manchester trains in one, calling additionally at Macclesfield (which the 8:20 omits calling additionally at Milton Keynes).

8:32 and with First Class fully declassified it was off, for a trip to Manchester where I was going to be slightly naughty and break my advance ticket at Stockport (and going over to a pre-purchased GM Rail Rover), the train manager mentioned the delay was down to signalling problems at Watford, and was well loaded, even getting to Stoke-Le-Trent & Macclesfield, before arriving at Stockport where I alighted (Eventually reaching Piccadilly 16 minutes down, giving me a total delay of 33 minutes (delay repay time!)).

Stockport is odd, revenue block at the bottom of the Manchester bound platforms (3/4), but not at the bottom of the platforms from Manchester (0 or 1/2), anyways, I was at the station, phone in hand with the relevant TOC required units moved from archive to standard on Google Keep, and I was waiting for any required units. A pair of Northern units arrived which were both duds, and the first required unit popped up, and it was 185116 final stop being the Airport, quite busy but I found a seat in the little area at the front of the unit, and into Piccadilly for the first time. RTT was up and running to tell me what was happening, and I found myself onto winner 323230 for the short hop back to Stockport, full of football fans it was. To P3/4, showing my ticket to the revenue guards [is Stockport on the list which Virgin are fitting ticket gates to?] and to see a dud 156 arrive, a dud 390 before a pair of units rolled in (from Chester I believe) and was two winning units with 142063 leading and 150277 behind.

Checking RTT to find a potential of a new station attack in the shape of Heaton Chapel with a Stockport bound service due 5 minutes afterwards (and another Piccadilly bound service 7 minutes), so alighting at Heaton Chapel, nice stairs with oldie pictures (I’m guessing it used to have a footbridge linking the platforms before the wires went up), crossing the railway passing a busy bus-stop and down to the other platform, seeing that the service was delayed by a couple minutes, so thinking that it would probably be the same service I passed up earlier as both duds, I went back to the Manchester bound platform, and was rewarded with 323235 (and I was right in my assumption that it was the Hazel Grove – Oxford Road service from earlier making its way back). I stayed on board for a single station hop to Levenshulme, to get my 2nd new station of the day. Underneath the subway to the Stockport bound platform and for another required starship, 323226 back to Heaton Chapel. Over the bridge to make a 2 minute connection with a pair of 150s, lead with dud 150140 with winner 150226 behind it.

To Piccadilly where the next Stockport bound service, other than a dud Virgin, was going to be a Cross Country towards Bristol, checking the number to be required 221125 so I hopped on board for the short run back to Stockport with a short wait before a pair of 158s rolled in bound for Liverpool, leading with winner 158852 with winner 158774 behind, I had sat down for it to wait for a XC service to clear P4 and it set off towards Piccadilly P14. A Hull service was due out in the next 10 minutes so thinking it was a chance of being 170s, proved incorrect but it still produced a winner in the shape of 185129. Staying on board for the first stop at Stalybridge arriving at the same time (and noting that the next Northern service to Victoria was a dud 142) as a Liverpool bound service, so a quick dash to get onto dud 185145, better a dud than a 20-odd minute wait. Back to the 15th busiest station in the UK, and after a quick check found no required units heading out in the next 20-odd minutes, I decided to break for some lunch.

After lunch (Sainsburys meal-deal), I headed across to P13/P14 to see what was happening, and another pair of East Midland Trains 158 rolled in, leading was dud 158806 but winner 158777 was on the back, and not knowing when the next time that unit might cross my path I jumped on for the short hop to Oxford Road. An ATW unit arrived which was a dud 175, a FTPE arrived which were both duds, before a Northern 156 decided to say “hi”, and it was required 156423, which is good because I need shed lots of Northern 156s, another single station hop to Piccadilly, and to the bridge, next departure in 2/3 minutes was a Euston bound 390, down to the platform to quickly check the number from the carriage number, and it was required 390005. To Stockport (again)!, and for another fester, 3 duds later and another pair of 158s tipped up, both were winners 158780 & 158785, so back to Piccadilly. Next up was another starship running fast to Stockport with 323236, and back into Piccadilly on winning 390135, having just missed a pair of 170s from Cleethorpes (delayed at the revenue block by a ticketless traveller trying to blag his way pass saying he needed the loo [but soon jumped onto the 390]), which was annoying as the front unit was one of the magical needed trio.

The 390 overtook the pair of 170s on route into Piccadilly, and with a reversal so it could go down to the airport I had a decision as I knew a required 350/4 was due out from the airport towards Scotland (having marked it heading down to the airport previously), go for the 350 and have a fester waiting for the 170s to show themselves for a Stockport run or jump on board for an Airport ‘dash’. Airport dash it was, big mistake, anyways leading was dud 170304 with winner 170309 behind, making up good time to see what was on RTT saying was departing the airport, before it stopped for 10 minutes outside the airport waiting for another service to clear a platform so it could pull in (I wonder when the 4th platform comes live if these problems will be resolved). Next service towards Piccadilly was a Northern service for Liverpool, and was required 150270, good thing as the departure after that 150 was a 323 stopper which was not required. To Piccadilly (once more), and I spotted a required pacer (as I wanted some pacer love) towards Marple, 142043, jumping on and checking RTT for a suitable station to ditch, found a 8 minute connection at the first call of Gorton. Heading across the footbridge, and back to the other platform for the few minutes (seems to be the only thing on the platform is an exposed ‘shelter’), I was going to jump onto the next service regardless if it was needed or not.

Winner 142004 rolled up which was an added bonus, RTT had some suggested movements for next Stockport bound services, and they were duds, so across to P13/P14 to see what 158s will show up. 158813 & 158788, both winners, for a quick hop to Oxford Road. The ATW 175 was another dud, so I passed that up, which was good as the next Piccadilly bound service was winner 185123 and dud 185120. Having previously noted a required Voyager in the station, I headed straight for it for a tight-ish connection, to score 221126, back to Stockport. Next up back to Piccadilly was Northern’s 150132, another winner. Quickly over to the 390 getting ready to depart found another tick in the box with 390103. My luck ran out at Stockport as I had a dud-fest, 5 duds in a roll, so I called it a day with dud 185116 back to Piccadilly. Across to P14, where I had the choice of TPE units to Oxford Road, in P14 was dud 350409, in P13 was a delayed Liverpool bound dud 185. So deciding to add 43 chains to the 350 to Oxford Road, alighting and across to P4 for a service from Scotland, and it was a winner, 350402.

To Piccadilly (once again, I had hoped to somehow get to Victoria or to cross off my remaining metrolink coverage [Mediacity to Eccles curve & Piccadilly to Victoria curve), I guess they will have to wait until June/July time when I can get some cheap advances for another Manchester based trip. Anyways, I noticed another required 390 was on the next Euston trip, so hopped across to get onto 390121, checking the time to decide I could probably fit in another Stockport hop if I got back in time. Sadly that wasn’t to be as Stockport was in a mild state of chaos, an ATW service which I had hoped to catch must have been diverted down the Airport branch after Wilmslow, and a 390 arrived into P4 where it came out of service (no idea, overheard “police are on their way” but not sure if that was related to the 390), which meant some passengers changing over to the return of 142063/150277 [with the 150 locked out of service] towards Piccadilly. I decided to stay as there was other services towards Piccadilly I could catch (noticing a service terminating into the bay platform 3a, which was a bit odd), but an EMT service had arrived, and was required 158783. Deciding to stay on until Oxford Road was probably a mistake, as we passed another required 158 heading towards Piccadilly.

4 attempt at Oxford Road, with the 4th attempt being a “needed” unit to get back to Piccadilly as I was getting hungry and time was ticking (close to 8 now). First up was a dud ATW 175, next was a dud 323, 3rd was a dud 185, before the 4th service rolled in, and it was more duds, 185114/185151. Should have gone back to Stockport on that 158. Anyways, the platform information screens was suggesting P7 for the 20:35, which was a dud 390 (my luck with the 390s has been terrible today), I had a quick look around Piccadilly before heading towards Burger King (Sainsburys had a very limited selection of sandwiches left), and purchasing a burger. There was a platform change and the 20:35 was due to depart from platform 5. So I headed across to eat the food on the train (no seats available), and my terrible luck continued with dud 390011. It would be the first Virgin service for me to call at Watford Junction, which is where I was being kicked off for a 7 minute connection with a Southern service to Clapham Junction (which I can see where they are coming from with cross-London connection time being short from Euston to Waterloo). This was going to be a bit of a worry as the service found itself 5 minutes late leaving Milton Keynes. Good thing was that it was going down the WCML in the slow-tracks, giving me a cross platform interchange from P9 to P10.

The service somehow gained 3 minutes between Milton Keynes and Watford so arrived 2 minutes down, giving me enough time for a quick dash to board dud 377702. The hard seats were a shock after 2 hours on a 390, I had finished my 1st book on the way down, and couldn’t really get into my 2nd book, deciding to give it up. Nice short trip down the WCML and to the West London Line, the emergency lighting is rather bright when it comes on during the changeover from AC to DC (and I can feel the acceleration being less when on the 3rd rail). To Clapham Junction, not as busy as last week, which was good, a Poole service was running late. I decided to be naughty and jump onto the Alton bound service formed of dud 450005 & winner 450556 to Woking. A double 444 stormed passed on route to Southampton (the one which I must never catch from Woking on a Saturday evening as it is overtaken on route to Basingstoke by the 159 to Salisbury). At Woking a dud 444 arrived towards Poole, giving that one a miss (might have been different if 017 decided to show itself) as a delayed 159006 rolled in to take me back home, thankfully not as busy as last week, as I managed to get a seat tonight (and changing over to a table seat at Basingstoke) in the ‘quiet’ coach.

Back at Grateley for a nice walk home, the end of a busy (but not as varied as I would have liked) day, nothing planned for Sunday owing to the major works closing the line around the Woking area, and I couldn’t be bothered driving to Romsey to do something in Southampton area. Save my pennies for Friday’s London bash & Saturday’s HST tour

As always an excellent read, you must really have got fed up of Piccadilly to Stockport! Always a favourite leap for me too mind, I haven't done it for a long time though. Very productive trip there fair dos, your requirements must be coming down well on Virgin.

Shame about the delays on the WCML but it could have been far worse!

Indeed, there was a wire down around Crewe so the ATW services were being canned.

Pic to Stockport is a good leap, not as boring as some leaps.

27x 390s & 5x 221s for Virgin (WC)
