As you can possibly tell from my user name most of my bashing was done in the 80’s following peaks, but for the last three years I have done a Freedom of Severn and Solent in January/February - one of the best value rovers around, especially if you are into ‘classic’ traction - well a HST is about as classic as it gets these days! Ah well here goes for this year’s rover.
Plan was to cover a number of items during the three days:
• Some decent XC HST mileage
• Trying to clear my remaining FGW power cars (which I may have had in the 80’s but did not record them at the time!)
• Cover the Taunton-Westbury via Castle Cary line
• Golden Valley in the daylight
• Loco haulage - well the 67 from Cardiff-Newport
Day 1:
With 4 HST turns out today, I had planned to cover some reasonable mileage and do a return on line via Castle Cary today - best laid plans……………..
I arrived in Gloucester by Bus, courtesy of Stagecoach, which remarkably was on time and bought my ticket which theoretically was not valid until 9am. Quick check on my app (did not have those in the 80’s) to find that the 0852 XC HST from Cheltenham was about 12 late. A quick word with the TM and he let me travel on the SWT 158 across from Gloucester. This paid off as on arrival at Cheltenham 43321+43384 were waiting on the 0600 Leeds-Plymouth. RA Taunton, an hour earlier than planned.
The journey was undertaken in pleasant sunshine with most of it spent at a table seat in XC Mark 3 - still comfortable and roomy, even if looking a bit tired! A slightly late arrival in Taunton was not an issue as my next train 0645 Penzance-Paddington was about 12 late also. This duly arrived with 43180+43078 and whisked me to Westbury which was very cold but in glorious sunshine. Choosing this move allowed me to make the SWT 159 service which I took from Westbury to Bath, before disembarking for 43150+43092 on the following Paddington-Bristol.
At Bristol TM, I had a 30 minute wait for the next southbound XC HST which was 43378+43207 on the Edinburgh-Plymouth. This train rarely seems to run on time in the West Country and today was no exception when we were held around Yatton for some reason. This made the +9 connection at Tiverton Parkway a………-1 minute - do I bail at Taunton? With 4 diagrams out on a Monday there was one an hour later, but that would mean an hour at Tiverton - anyone who has alighted there would know what I mean! Anyway, I was very relaxed at my table of 4 so stayed on. Thankfully, my son had the gen which coach was next to the bridge at Tiverton and both trains arrived simultaneously allowing a quick dash over to make 43384+43321 on 1S51 - 1224 Plymouth-Glasgow. Once again a table of four to myself and a blistering run between Taunton & Bristol TM gave a 6 early arrival at the latter.
My original plan was to go south again on the 640 Dundee-Plymouth XC HST, but this was showing 25 down and this would certainly not make the +6 at Taunton for the return to Westbury. I stayed on 1S51 until Bristol Parkway, before taking the next Swansea-Paddington to Swindon with 43019+43156. At Swindon I planned to return to South Wales on 1445 Paddington-Swansea, which duly arrived with 43197+43198. This ran on time to Cardiff where I had a 30 minute wait before the only loco haulage of the day was sampled - 67002 doing the honours on the 1716 to Holyhead. I alighted at Newport, which I find cold at the best of times, so the prospect of the XC 170 to Gloucester for a +10 for the 1955 bus home was too tempting than any more mileage for the day. This move worked well and was home by 1930.
No new power cars (still want 6 FGW ones) but two items done off the list. Let’s see what tomorrow brings!

Glad to see you've had a good time on the modern day scene, and I can only concur regarding the value of a FoSS. Genuinely lost count of the amount of them I used to buy!

Only thing I really want to point out is your run to Swindon from Bristol Parkway. You've got it noted in your trip report as 43019, which was the power car written off in the Ufton Nervet accident, so I'm assuming it's a typo. If you have got it noted as 43019, I would recommend posting in the TOPS Request Thread and seeing what it actually was!

Looking forward to reading more of your trip!

And so to Day 2 of my FoSS.
Firstly, two corrections - as pointed out by Techniquest it was not 43019 in service on Monday, it was of course 43029, perhaps typing on my phone is not my forte, and, unless I am Doctor Who, the bus left Gloucester at 1855 (thanks to my son for pointing out this error to his Dad)
So a frosty drive to Lydney was order of the day after scrapping ice off the car. The station is far too popular for the amount of people who use the train so it was parking on the road being order of the day for the 0917 ATW service to Newport, which was a cosy 143608.
On the approach to Newport 66148 was in East Usk yard and one of my favourite classes, in the form of 60039, went through on the tanks. My wait was short as I boarded a quite empty 955 Cardiff-Paddington formed of 43182+43148. This was a largely uneventful journey to Swindon where I arrived at just after 11am.
I had the choice of a number of HST’s to go back to Bristol, as my plan was to catch 1V50 from either Temple Meads or Parkway, so I watched trains go West and East to see if any of my elusive power cars were out and about. The only thing of note was the failure of the 153 on 2M06 0948 Westbury-Swindon somewhere between Chippenham and Swindon, so the SWT 158 off the Golden Valley Branch was sent to rescue it. My journey towards Bristol Parkway was on 1045 Paddington-Swansea in the hands of 43158+43189.
At Parkway, whilst waiting for 1V50 0606 Edinburgh-Plymouth, 70003 was shunting in the yard and 66614 was visible by looking through a small hole in the metal shuttering. Whilst at Parkway one of my required power cars was on the 1155 Cardiff-Paddington, but I decided to stick with my planned move. 43304+43357 arrived a couple of minutes late for the journey to Tiverton Parkway which I undertook at the usual table of 4 for the trip west. Considering yesterday was bright sunshine, the overcast weather of today meant that the Thermal Gloves and Hat were useful at places like Parkway (more of that later)
My connection at Tiverton Parkway was much more relaxed than yesterday and I was able to take in the ambience of the station……….ok so I am joking, but it was only about 5 minutes before 43301+43303 arrived on the Plymouth-Glasgow. The run to Bristol TM was a tad slower than yesterday, making the connection for the 1430 Bristol-Paddington tight, but this was made with a quick run over to Platform 13. Back in the 80’s, trains from Platform 13 were rare and the last time I can recall using this was one winter Saturday evening with a 45/0 and a set of coffins on a HST replacement Bristol-York - what I would give for that again!!!
43198+43197 pushed and pulled me to Swindon, where I was able to watch 66020 doing that somewhat unusual thing these days, shunting in the loop next to the station. 60054 powered through on the return MURCO tanks to West Wales, before my calculations were correct and 43002+43139(winner) arrived on the 1445 Paddington-Swansea. I boarded this to go back to Cardiff and once settled discovered that somehow I had lost my Thermal Hat - when and what train, who knows but I suppose it’s better than losing one glove.
Arriving in the gloom of South Wales so soon after leaving Bristol Parkway, made me think about my next move. As well as working out how to get back to Lydney, I do not find it particularly rewarding travelling in darkness so decided to return straight from Cardiff on the 1655 to Paddington with 43171+43026. Just outside Cardiff was the white GBRf 66’s, which I was able to identify by using the internet as 721. Now then, why don’t they put the numbers in the same place like they used to in the 80’s - using the internet to identify things…….progress?
At Bristol Parkway, I got off for the 10 minute connection for the 1524 Plymouth-Leeds, which meant more XC HST mileage for the day off 43357+43304. I did this to Cheltenham before alighting for the 1834 Cheltenham-Paddington (43174+43147) which I took to Gloucester before picking up the 1845 Cheltenham-Maesteg to Lydney with 143608 again!
Another good day of 400+ miles, one power car scored and some more XC HST mileage. Last day tomorrow - 4 out of my 5 required power cars are not attached to a set, so I may struggle for some red pen action.

I missed that about the bus time in day 1, good thing your son noticed it!

A good bit of action had, shame about losing the hat which I can only imagine is useful on the open stations at this time of year! I can't find mine lately, which is really helpful when walking in windy conditions to/from work!

Good to hear one of your power cars was scored at least, and you never know, any or all of those you need might be shoved onto a set tonight ready for tomorrow! Extremely unlikely of course, but I wish you luck!

And so to day 3 of my FoSS

The first question was, did I have a replacement hat for the day? The answer was “yes” - not sure whether it was mine or not but it was in the cupboard and available!

I had various possible moves planned for the day, ranging from one of the HST’s via Weston-S-M, probably the 1147 southbound from Bristol, to then go via Castle Cary to Westbury, a move to get in the Golden Valley (Swindon-Gloucester via Stroud) or the Dundee - Plymouth (HST on a Wednesday) to Taunton for a return trip to Westbury via Castle Cary. All of these moves were being mindful of the 5 HST power cars that I still needed - I did have someone looking out for me with the ‘gen’

So, first move was to Lydney for the 917 to Maesteg which today was 142077. Just before Caldicot I received a text to say that 43191 was on 1C08 (0930 Paddington-Bristol TM) so I quickly worked out a move that involved bailing at STJ for the Cardiff-Portsmouth Harbour.

The Pompey came in with 158951 and I took this to Bristol TM, for my positioning move - 1030 Bristol-Paddington. This was 43132+43031, which I got off at Bath - quite a shame really as the train was empty and I had a table of 4 to myself.

At Bath I made my way to the East End of the platform just in case the power car was on the back to make a positive i.d. This always arouses the suspicions of the station staff, as they look at you as if you are going to walk off the end of the platform or something worse - anyway 1C08 arrived on time and sure enough it was 149+191, the latter being the required power car. Only bus stop mileage on this to Bristol TM where it terminated and I re-considered my move.

I decided to board the 1130 Bristol-Paddington with 43088+43187 and take this through to Swindon - this was again empty and I had another table of 4 to myself, so that I could travel the Golden Valley in the light. This turned out to be 43153+43012 on ‘The Cheltenham Spa Express’ - once again empty. Theoretically, I got in some new track on this as this is the first time I have travelled Swindon-Kemble as double track. This has to be one of the most sensible moves undertaken as it has given many options for diversions, additional traffic etc. to this once bottleneck bit of single track. At Gloucester loop a very grimy Colas 70 (which I identified later as 808) was waiting to go south with the empty hoppers.

The weather took a real turn for the worst back in the Home County and Cheltenham was Cold, Damp and Dreary - thankfully I was only there for 15 minutes before catching the Dundee-Plymouth south with XC HST 43378+43207. I had a further decision to make whilst travelling to the first stop (BPW) - did I stay on this to Taunton, for the move to Westbury & back which might mean some Voyager mileage on the return north (and a later finish), or do I make my way across to Cardiff for a quick pint and some food in Wetherspoons? The latter won and I had 43018+43010 across to the principality on the 1315 Paddington-Cardiff.

Refuelled with some Fish & Chips and a beer, I made my way back to the station to decide how to finish the day. My mind was made up when I saw the 1615 Maesteg go out with an Arriva 158, this would work back on the 1812 ex- Cardiff, stopping at Lydney, so I had some time to kill. I jumped on 43140+43188 on the 1528 Swansea-Paddington to Newport, for a quick platform leap to return on the 1330 Manchester-Tenby with 175101 (a new class for me, never one to go for units but this was ok to travel in - give me a 45/0 and a set of vacs on a Newcastle-Paignton overnight……………sorry reminiscing again!!!)

Back at Cardiff at 1700 meant I would see what was on the 1716 Holyhead, so when this came in with 67002 again I thought “well it would be rude not to.” I stood in the back vestibule as the train was wedged - and yes it was also next to the thrash, and got off at Newport for a HST back - 43002+43139 on the 1545 Paddington-Swansea.
Of note, was the fact that between Severn Tunnel Junction and Cardiff, I saw no less than 8 Class 66’s - 018,061,086,089,125,132,193 & 198 - on various steel related services along this busy corridor.

158820 duly returned to form the 1812 to Cheltenham which delivered me efficiently back to Lydney for my car home.

So in summary what did I achieve?
All 5 of the ‘items’ that I wanted to cover were done, with just under 1200 miles in three days. Three ‘red pen’ moments, and a number of different types of units - 142, 143, 158, 159, 170 & 175 - note that I class the HST’s as a loco now (they were trams in the 80’s!), had 38 of these over the 3 days. I also managed to avoid any Voyager mileage, but I did lose my hat!

Hope you enjoyed reading.

Good variety had there, and good to hear you managed to score a winner power car in the end!

1,200 miles in 3 days, crikey you did well there. I'd forgotten how easy it is to rake up the mileage on a FoSS!
