Trouble at Shrewsbury last night when 175003 working the 22:17 (off Shrewbury) Cardiff-Manchester service. It failed at Church Stretton with lack of air & gremlins in the TMS. Managed to crawl into shrewsbury just under an hour late where it was held & coupled up to 175111 which was on a manchester service following it. Leaving Shrewsbury at around 23:25 they made it all of 6 miles before both failing near Yorton station. In the process of coupling up, the bad unit had transmitted the fault to the good one. Eventually they limped back into Shrewsbury at around 01:45where the 40+ passengers were transferred to a proper unit (158838 ) & dispactched to Crewe at 02:00 for forwarding on by taxi.
175003 was attended by Alstom fitters in the platform at shrewsbury where a fault with the single electrically driven compressor was found along with mulitple electronic failure's within the unit. 175111 assisted 003 down abbey forgate yard (salop) where it was dumped till morning.

Well it was a fun night!

What was 175111 doing there anyway? I'm sure the 22:17 is the last train of the night from Shrewsbury-Manchester.

You are correct, it was actually the Holyhead via Crewe
service . It's a connection with Northern's manchester service at crewe, hence we just bung all the mancs on that one. ;)

I'm sure there where more splitting services in this country when it was a lot harder, so why not split the Holyhead/Manchester trains Shrewsbury?

Or off topic...

The London Euston - Manchester Via Wilmslow and the London Euston - Liverpool etc... could get joined and split at crewe...

Would be fun to see an 18 carrage train running up the WCML... And it would free up paths in the Trent Valley

ahh right, the one that gets into Holyhead around 2 in the morning! Is that the one from Birmingham or the 19:05 from Carmarthen?

The 19:05 Carmarthen I believe, it certainly came up frome the south. A bit sketchy on this service as it's not one of our jobs.

lol good old 175's! love these units but crikey don't they have some faults! Its uncommon not to have a driver/guard giving a fault sheet or whining about something wrong with their 175 lol.

IIRC 16 is the maximum that Euston can take......

See I'm not on my own with the hate for these contraptions!!

175007 failed today, looks like seized engine on one end, the second one in a few months! It did carry on for a while on one engine much to the delay of the service.

GhostCav, just out of interest, what's so good about 158820? (Apart from the fact that it's a 158!) ;)

820 is known across the area as Damien (from the horror film), it was once a very evil 158:shock:. It used to breakdown randomly at an alarming rate, bit's flew off it. Even one of the drive shafts came adrift once, landing about 60ft away in a field causing a nationwide modification to driveshaft housings on 158's even though 820, I believe is the only one it has happened to. It also derailed a couple of times in canton yard, once derailing the unit it was coupled to. Also it's seems to have more than it's fair share of fatalities. It feels different to the other 158's & can be a right awkward unit sometimes. Personally I get on well with it though & like driving it as it goes like sh*t through a goose, although it did throw a wobbly the other day with me & start to lose power a lot. Basically the drivers traction guide for 158's does not apply to Damien as it does not seem to be like the rest with faults & symptoms.

If something bad is going to happen, it will normally happen when you are driving Damien. ;)

IIRC, 158820 also has "Damien" and crucifixes scratched and written all over the cab?

Regarding the comment about splitting trains, this is something the likes of Grand Central and other proposed open access operators have suggested in the past for their services. Network Rail were not happy one bit. The major problem is that if your one long train gets delayed then split you're ending up with two trains that need to be found paths somehow.

Note to self : Stay away from 158820 when it enters the station!

Always a good idea that!

On a seperate note, fatality at church stretton today, Cardiff driver I believe. Stack up of units at Salop waiting to head south. 175109 at the lead, fails with fire alarm bells going off due to low battery voltage, unit declared a failure, 110v supply failed, engine only running on centre coach, no brake continuity to 57 (lead) end, no brake release, TMS going mental....Can't shift unit even after isolating things. Decided I had had enough as I was only helping out on my way home, got out of 175 & went home......... 175's, who the hell decided we should use these things!<D

Tell you what fancy doing a swap - give Manchester the 175s and we'll give you the 185s.;)

For all their faults at least 175s know that to call at a station, first you must stop!

Btw I keep hearing Alstom have 'done something' to make them more reliable, but the signs aren't encouraging when 158s start frequently appearing on a booked 175 service (like the Manchester's from North and South Wales - all booked 175's but you see a couple of ATW 158s there each day normally).

Hail All! <D

Hmmm...Can't understand why people are shivering at the idea of that! 158820 sounds like a damn good, top-notch unit to me...:D<D

I notice though that someone has still neglected to amend the "Maximum Speed" plate to the obligatory 666mph...:D:razz:

GhostCav: Next time ye are driving him, try sticking him on full-power whilst heading down the steepest gradient in the area. From the impression that I'm getting, he'll probabally exceed that figure by a long shot!<D
Note to self : Stay away from 158820 when it enters the station!
Note to self: 158820 is a f-ing ace unit, worth taking a trip on whenever ye have the chance! <D
(What TOC has Damien again? And what route(s) does he normally run along? 8-))

I dunno how well ye get on with him GhostCav, but I'm going to hazard a guess that if I were ever to drive Damien (Maybe to the sound of Necrophobic or Cannibal Corpse on my MP3 player at vol XI? ;)) I reckon that I'd probabally get along very well with 'im!:shock:<D
(If ever I get cleared to drive 158's, I know where I'll want to do my "baptism" of Fire... <D)

And as a later afterthought: I wonder if they'd seriously consider renumbering 158820 to 158666? <D

Farewell, cheers for keeping me up to speed, and apologies if I've over-bandwidthed on the Twisted emotes in this post!<D

Arriva :) Unsure on routes, but I'm sure it makes its way down are way at some point, rarely pay attention to unit numbers tbh

Arriva Trains Wales mate, usually on Aber to brum services, but get's about quite a bit on other routes including Cardiff's.

Damien seems to like Metallica's "Enter sandman" & a bit of classic Sisters of Mercy to be honest. ;) To be fair anything dark & twisted would work well.

The list of numbers for the Vultron Destination display has listed as well as for example, Birmingham New Street (097), Chester (165), Balloch express (o47) it does also list Hell (666)!
