On a recent journey I changed at Kirkdale to get from Kirkby to Ormskirk. (That's a lot of 'kirk'!) I felt rather silly that I changed there when there is a possibility of walking between Rice Lane and Walton and even likely making a train up! It's a -1 minute at KKD but a 4 minute walking change RIL-WAO. Being unfamiliar with the area, I only realised how close they are after sailing past Walton and wondering what on earth those platforms were!

Yet- as these stations are NOT an official pair for walking interchanges, I'd have broken the terms and conditions of my advance ticket by walking. Seems barmy. But then the positive is that I didn't make a train up, and I was entitled to 60 minutes worth of delay repay instead of 30 :)

Are these the stations located closest to one another that aren't a walking interchange? If they are, are there any other ones that make sense? If not, which pair(s) beat them?

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
According to the TfL website, the interchange at Brixton between London Underground Victoria Line and the London, Chatham, & Dover Railway is very strangely not a recognised interchange on through journeys.

However, the interchange between Shepherd's Bush West London Line and London Underground Central Line is a recognised interchange.

Northfleet and Ebbsfleet International are very close to each other but there is no direct walking route. A direct link would reduce the walking time to about two minutes.

I got a little confused by the topic title and wondered if you were planning a radical downsizing of the railway!

What about the 20mins walk between Central and Lea Road in Gainsborough? It's almost always faster to walk than change at Retford especially if it isn't Saturday!

The walk from one station to the other at Brixton, while fine by day, is not necessarily one that could be recommended to anyone of a nervous disposition in the evening. The lack of staff at the S.E. station mean people can hang around the stairwells too. Not an experience I'd want to repeat in a hurry.

I used to go from Leeds - Rugby via Warrington.

The walking interchange was from Central to Bank Quay.

Not signposted or even remotely close, but worth it for a direct pendo rather than a voyager to brum

Hartford (Cheshire) and Greenbank are about 1 mile apart along one road but don't think they are an official interchange.

I find the best source to be unofficial site http://www.brtimes.com where it lists if stations have official transfers at the top, once you have searched for a station.

NRE has this non-comprehensive page: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations_destinations/46646.aspx

Otherwise, its if journey planner will show it.

Cheers. I note the Burscoughs are - given that they are fairly far apart I'm surprised Rice Lane/Walton (next to each other) aren't.

Indeed, I'm surprised they didn't just build Walton Junction as one station.

Okay, according to that website Hessle on the north side of the Humber is not an interchange, it can't be more than 1:30mins walk across the bridge to Barton-on-Humber on the South side.
It's a nice walk with great views over the longest suspension bridge in the World with a footpath on it.

Paisley Canal and Paisley Gilmour Street are pretty close but not an interchange, which means anybody travelling south or west of Paisley from stations on the Canal line (e.g. Dumbreck to Gourock) has to travel via Glasgow Central, which seems daft to me.

3 and a half mile walk according to Google Maps. That's not particularly close...

Clock/Kent House is official

On the way back from Ormskirk I did the Burscough walk :) Not too close but not unreasonably far.

Yep. Seems like it should be a reasonable change...

As does the Hartford-Greenbank one! A little longer but connects two unconnected, perpendicular lines!

Frimley and Farnborough North.

The shortest walking route, unlit and potentially boggy in parts, is 1.1 miles.

Ah! I see! You don't mean shut them, you mean stations which are near to each other. Well I never!
I have adjusted the thread title, to clarify and comply with the Forum Rules.

That may be so, but I don't think many passengers would appreciate receiving an itinerary requiring such a walk. You should have seen the look on a racegoers face at York when she was told that to get back to Nottingham required a short walk through Newark, and that's nothing in comparison.

I don't think that these make sense though; you've given a good reason why it shouldn't be a walking interchange. And here's another: people can interchange between Ash Vale & North Camp instead.

This is a recognised Out of Station Interchange (OSI list).

Is Purley Oaks to Sanderstead a legitimate interchange?

Bethnal Green and Whitechapel are about half a mile apart but aren't an official interchange. During my brief period commuting from North East London to South East London I used to regularly make a 7 minute connection between the two, albeit at a brisk walk!

Ridiculous, once again. I'm cheesed off at this.

The original title was in plain, correct, and relevant English and there was no reason to change it.

I also do not consider this to be 'trivia', nor half the threads that are brandished with it. Trivia is a collection of pointless information, and in my original post I explained why this is not something that is pointless, as I could have arrived at my destination 15 minutes earlier than I did do.

So, please could you change the title of MY thread back to how it was, please.

I doubt the moderators have read the first post. But they most be pressed for time. Everyone makes mistakes in a hurry.
It seams that people lose their subscription when a post is renamed too.

Upper Tynedrum and Lower Tynedrum in the Highlands aren't a interchange.
Neither are Coombe Junction and Liskeard.

Yes. The Southern printed timetables recognise both Purley Oaks to Sanderstead, and Whyteleafe to Upper Warlingham, as interavailable. See front cover, the Notes and Symbols page, as well as the actual timetable http://www.southernrailway.com/download/30548.7/26-caterham-to-purley-croydon-and-london

That mentions ticket interavailability, not walking interchanges. Different things. Of the two pairs, Upper Warlingham-Whyteleafe is the only one that is an official walking interchange.

I've run between the two on a tube/rail challenge. I remember busting a gut, and just about making the same train as my mate that casually caught the bus from Hoxton to Cambridge Heath. I'd have been better off if we'd both missed it though! I had 5 minutes to run it.

Oops, but looks like I've found something for the thread, as both pairs have a walking time of 8-10 minutes according to Google Maps :D so it should be either both of them, or neither of the two, that are included.

Neither are Coombe Junction and Liskeard.

All (scheduled passenger) trains which stop at Coombe Junction stop at Liskeard, though, so there’d be less point in that.

Historically, Coombe Junction’s main raison d’être was as a walking interchange to Liskeard, since before it was set up, the previous station on the Looe Valley line that technically served Liskeard was rather further away from town.

Another one in London that is a reasonable walking interchange but possibly not recognised as one would be Vauxhall (London & South Western Railway) and Victoria (London, Brighton, & South Coast Railway/London, Chatham, & Dover Railway).

Although the London Underground Victoria Line links both stations, it is a reasonable walk along Vauxhall Bridge Road with both stations at either end.
