The Airedale Line is bring disrupted due to overhead line problems. The 1756 from Leeds to Skipton has been stuck in pitch black darkness somewhere near Shipley for approx 90 mins according to Twitter. Many services have been cancelled.

What's the maximum wind speed before trains will get cancelled because of the wires flapping about in the wind too much?

Between the parallel lines
Lines blocked at Reading West by an obstruction blown down in the wind.

Apparently a considerable portion of fence, or possibly scaffolding, has caught under a train (AFAIK an HST), wrapped around it and knocked out the brakes - and with widespread chaos thereafter, as signallers have quite understandably done an emergency stop call for the area. The driver is investigating and reporting back.

FGW passengers may use SWT.

There's also an obstruction on the line at Cholsey (mentioned on BBC Travel site)

You really are an ungrateful tw@ arent you! <D
Did you not notice the intensity of the winds in your little world!
Maybe you would like to volunteer to sit on the front coupling and deflect any items before they hit the train so it can proceed at full linespeed!

At least there will be one more seat available for somebody who lives in the real world tomorrow!

Harsh!

Is it factually accurate though?

I am sure our learned friend would be more than happy if his train was to run at linespeed, hit some debris on the track, derail and hit something solid!
Just imagine the uproar about trying to run a normal service when it was obvious that loose items (and some not so loose ones) would/could be blown onto the railway lines causing issues!
before anyone comes back with the 'oh but the motorways stayed opened' line, road traffic has much better brakes than a train plus the fact they can swerve!

As I mentioned previously the 0515 service from GLQ to FKG ran ok and then they pulled all the services.

Anglo-Scottish trains were leaving Central but Scotrail pulled the plug on everything.

Nope, I wouldn't like to be at the sharp end of a 400 ton projectile doing say 125 mph and confront some numpties trampoline, garage door or whatever. Oh and several motorways were closed...the A1 was because a shed blew off a lorry...

After Scotrail's pathetic performance today, I'm definitely driving in tomorrow.

Luckily I'm starting at 7am so should be ok :p

as usual its a no win situation for scotrail

they cancel and are accused of being premature

they have an accident and then accused of negligence

don't you realise that its a hard decision to cancel services in the way they did and costs them a lot of money

I have never been a great fan of scotrail so please don't accuse me of being an apologist for them

in this case and the last time there were mass cancelations scotrail took a proactive and sensible decision

Trampolines seem to be one that is being brought up time and time again. There was someone on the radio several times today from Network Rail and they highlighted trampolines as a big issue.

Shed roofs, patio tables etc are the types of things I'd expect them to say however trampolines were mentioned like they had lifted great numbers of them off the tracks.

Have there really been that many?

Look a the satellite view on Google maps to see how many people have them, loads. And far too many of them are not anchored securely enough to the ground.

I'm currently on the way to Bradford on the GC train, the Newcastle van roof problem has my train delayed now.

Yup, but plenty of other garden stuff too. Lid off a hot tub was reported on the Tyneside Metro today.

67004, worked as far as Aberdeen and worked 1B16 back tonight; so no replacement required. Depending on the extent of damage might not work 1A25 in the morning.

Lol yes I see what you mean. I had no idea they were so popular. The only reason I asked was the way the guy from NR was saying it on the radio. "Garden furniture and LOTS of trampolines" was what he said at one point whereas I would have though trampolines would have been in the minority compared to garden furniture such as chairs and tables etc.

The Paisley Canal Line is having issues with it's infrastructure due to the weather, according to this. First Glasgow is accepting rail tickets on the appropriate routes.

NRE's Scotrails Facebook page reporting no service ABD>INV and suggesting Pax should use First Bus Services who are accepting tickets. Somehow dont think they'll get very far!

Chairs and tables wont cause a problem for a train though, they will simply be destroyed on impact, a (metal framed) trampoline has the potential to cause a lot of damage especially if it gets under the train.

Indeed - East Coast's 1E06 from Glasgow Central appears to have been diverted via Bellshill and Holytown to avoid Motherwell.

#EMTUpdate: High Winds have damaged a 30ft mast near railway lines at #Harpenden, as such we're not able to run trains in or out of London.

Thameslink are reporting Overhead wire damage in the St Albans area, and are not running I don't think at the moment, so the two incidents may well be related.

Not strictly speaking Scotland but the job's stopped north of St Pancras due to high winds damaging a 30ft mast near the line at Harpenden.

Some old rusty one that would have fallen on the track if the cabinet next to it wasn't there http://twitter.com/EMTrains/status/553910862919249920/photo/1
