What graphics card do you have?

I use a Ati Radeon X550 and get 35 - 40 fps on BVE 4.2
Nividia GeForce FX 5500.

Thats what I was thinking - I had the problem before, System restore to a date when it was working...and you will be fine 
Nothing, I just wish it would work instead of dropping so badly and not recovring.
I won't give up on BVE though.

I only have a problem with certain trains. The most problematic are the HST4 and class 323. Occasionally the 153 likes to have an arguement - but I've stopped using them

a real driver has absolutley no control over what train / route they drive!
I wish I could fix this problem...
Try reformatting your PC.
A good thing to do is have two hard drives (for reliability two physical drives are best), but two partitions on the same drive will do. One drive can have your system files on it, the other for data. Back up the data regularly, and create a ghost image of your system drive. When the system goes wrong just re-ghost it.
BVE 4 uses the .net Framework, have you tried installing the latest service packs from Windows Update?
I've not done any extensive testing, but based on my experiences I believe it matters far more what raw processing power you have by having a fast CPU and system bus, than having a good graphics card. It runs well on my laptop with integrated graphics, but not well on my PC with an old CPU but a reasonable graphics card.

Have you (or anyone else) updated your graphics card drivers?
If so you may need to go back to older drivers-have had this problem a few times in the past with nvidea and also with sound card drivers.
