Hi there,

I've just received word that I passed the fault finding aptitude test for a trainee train driver job with translink and have been given a date in January to attend a testing centre.

They have sent me fairly extensive practice materials which I intend to pour over exhaustively but was wondering if anyone knew of further resources that will help me prepare for the day. Are there practice books I can pay for to help further and if so, are they worth buying?

Thanks in advance,

luke

Hi,

I just used the practice materials provided by the TOC. I passed all of the assessment at the enhanced level. Just make sure you do the practice materials, get plenty of rest the night before. Had a good breakfast in the morning of the test and go in with a clear head.

Listen carefully to the assessor and follow the practice instructions and you will get to do a practice for each test first.

Are you doing both Stage 1 and Stage 2 in one day or is it over separate days?

Good luck with the assessments.

There is a standard level pass rate and an enhanced level pass rate. Some TOC's (Maybe FOC's too, I don't know) require you to pass at the enhanced level. First Trains is one TOC that requires enhanced pass rate.

I don't think there is anymore.

Someone posted on here in the last week or so that they failed even though their mark met the standard level but not that required of the TOC.....not sure where it is right now, maybe someone else can link it but it's definitely there.

I'm not certain it's a agreed and set 'enhanced' level of pass, but the process I've just been through with C2C had a higher required pass mark for the assessments than the industry standard.

One lady who sat Stage 2 with us passed according to OPC standards, but not the C2C standards.

All depends if the 'enhanced' passes are the same level or if each TOC/FOC can set it's own requirements.

The only reason why they need to do this is because many of the candidates are using practice material from the web - I personally think the whole assessment process is a farce with all the practice material flying around and has already led to many candidates getting the jobs who are not suitable, I have been in the industry 15 years and it's only over the last 5 years that I have heard of candidates failing rules, not being suitable with an instructor and many being dismissed as they were not up to the role, this I believe is the reason why TOC/FOC's are upping the anti. You only have yourselves to blame so don't knock the system.

I am currently in week 4 of rules. Yes there is alot of info on the web to help in the testing procedure but learning the rules mainly comes down to how good a memory you have and whether you are willing to put the work in. There was nothing on the web that was really very helpfull on the trp tests. And frankly having to remember a couple of passages for the memory test in no way prepares you for the sheer amount of info you need to learn each week!

I would recommend downloading the Group Bourdon Tool and practising with both paper printouts and the program itself. You really do need to practice a bit to get the hang of spotting all the different types of four dot groups. They don't send you any in the practice materials

However that's the only proper practice I did and I passed all the tests (and then failed the manager interview  ).
