can someone explain why six minutes is allowed in the timetable between Boxhill and Westhumble and Dorking (when the journey only takes 2 minutes)

is this just to ensure that not every train is late into Dorking as otherwise would be the case?

Not that Wimbledon ASC or Woking regulate properly anyway. You could put a load of shop mannequins in there and a computer and no one would be able to tell the difference.

To be fair, we could say the same about half the drivers!

There seems to be delays again this morning, maybe this will be solved after the track works next Jan & Feb. Are they also taking the opportunity at the same time at Wimbledon to build the second Foot bridge at the London end of the Station linking the LUL & NR platforms?

The 6.33 from Guildford to Waterloo via Cobham was late today awaiting train crew so they cancelled all the stops after Effingham Junction to avoid causing further delays! Some passengers not to happy on Twitter. Can't blame South West Trains for cancelling though as they do need to avoid to many delays with so many trains going I to Waterloo.

Wonder what did cause the congestion in the end though. Only 10 minutes but National Rail Enquiries thought it important enough to mention o the live online departure boards. SWT clearly can't cancel stops of every train to avoid congestion.

Surprisingly my 8.33 train arrived into Surbiton early today. That's along with it arriving on time seems to be rare at the moment. Bear in mind there is a leaf fall timetable to help. The guard was good though as he mentioned that a delay could occur beyond Surbiton. Top marks for keeping passengers informed.

I certainly hope so!
they are doing a lot of works next to platfrom 9 at the moment but I don't know whether that is to just extend the track for the tram service or not?

Yep, it will allow 2 trams in the platform at the same time.

The simple solutions are:

1. Stop making the turns so long & the turnarounds on the roster so tight.

Sometimes you get silly ones where you sign off & then sign back on in 12h05 and of course it only needs some disruption the previous day and you can't get back in and spares & cover drivers/guards are rarer than hen's teeth.

More & more drivers are electing NOT to work their rest days as well (which is their right).

2. Thin out the service, they've put way too many trains on and the route is running at somewhere between 110-115% of capacity and it simply doesn't work. And if drivers were to adhere to the defensive driving policy then the system would simply collapse, because you're not meant to chase double yellows, single yellows & reds.

And that (defensive driving) is something that I do all of the time, keeping just on headways, so I'm just running on green or the occasional double yellow. If it takes out several subsequent trains then that's their (TPU) problem.

Sounds like a pair of 456s has come to grief at Bagshot bank...

Trains have been delayed between Ascot and Guildford, due to poor rail conditions at Bagshot. Trains have been running at a slower speed than normal, as it has been harder for trains to draw power from the line.
-
A train has now come to a stand at Bagshot station and is unable to get moving again. This means that services are unable to run between Ascot and Aldershot until it can be moved.

Did the mpv not run? There were always many jokes about the 456s struggling. The truth is out!

I don't think the second footbridge is happening in the short term, I think it is now possibly part of the overall Waterloo capacity project in as much as it describes work away from Waterloo as well as connecting the international platforms; so it might be this:
CP5 delivery plan said:
...station works at key locations across the route and a package of supporting mainline capacity improvement works.

Whatever project eventually does cover it now, the possibilities were last described in some detail in the early draft versions back in 2011 as a 'Wimbledon congestion relief' project; but unfortunately that has disappeared, so the second footbridge is no longer an explicitly described enhancement.

I had a trip Guildford-Aldershot and return earlier. Adhesion did seem to be very bad today. Struggled away from Guildford up the bank towards Wanborough. And stopping at Wanborough in the other direction a couple of little slides were audible. Trains on the Cobham route are struggling as well.

That's a shame if the second foot bridge does not happen at Wimbledon. It is really needed. (I wondered what the works were at Platform 9/10)

they are going to have problems on access to platforms 9/10 at Wimbledon if there is no second footbridge and more trams coming into the station.

there will need to be a one way system up and down like in place to get passengers down to the Waterloo trains on platform 5.

Oh I still think it will happen, just not within the next year or two. If it had kept ts own 'small project' definition in the enhancement plan we'd have published dates by now, but as it is it will be difficult to track whats going on.

Although at some stage it will have to appear in the council planning system.

In my experience it would be unlikely for the S&C renewal which is not really 'at Wimbledon station' (but west of Wimbledon and including the Sutton lines) to have an unrelated footbridge job added, the planning timescales are such that they'd have had to have decided on the footbridge a couple of years ago to include it next month.

Is that due to the leaves and rain? The new timetable starts on the 14th. Be interesting to see what the weather is like by then.

Clearly it's very helpful for passengers to have an idea of the time trains run, hence the leaf fall timetable to help try and run trains on time but the weather doesn't care when this starts or finishes. It could be that this year leaf issues extend for longer than previous years. One can't plan for such things though. If you suddenly ran trains earlier because leaf fall issues were still on going, without tell passengers, they wouldn't be too happy.

It would help if staff actually enforced the existing one way system on the stairs. They don't, except in the peaks. So a new such system won't make any difference.

Tonights disruption is:

South West Trains between London Waterloo and Portsmouth Harbour / Guildford / Exeter St Davids

*

TOC(s) affectedSouth West Trains;*Description

Emergency engineering works near Esher means journeys are being delayed by up to 30 minutes between Wimbledon and Woking / Virginia Water.

There is no firm estimate yet of how long disruption will last but it is likely to continue until at least 19:00.

You can follow this incident using the hashtag*#Esher

To check your journey, please use the National Rail Enquiries real-time*Journey Planner

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/87749.aspx

Does anyone know how the problems at Esher are affecting Virginia Water?
So far two trains cancelled. The 17.02 and 17.32. Hopefully the 17.39 won't be too delayed. I believe is uses the slow line normally. However I have been put on the fast line in the past so it is possible at times. Not saying that the case tonight. No news from the guard yet. We aren't going to fast it must be said so likely to be delayed. The guard may not be aware of the problems yet of course.

At least the 17.02 cannot delay my service into Woking. Last might the guard helpfully put us on to platform 4 and put the Portsmouth train onto platform 5. That meant I could make my connection. Excellent as I was meeting someone in Guildford

Broken rail at Esher tonight :o http://twitter.com/SW_Trains/status/540568864929902592/
Well done to whoever found that, as a passenger and layman it looks like a needle in a haystack!
Yes definitely well done. Would a machine spot it or human eye? If human eye that's very good.

Still not certain how it affects Virginia Water.

Fortunately for myself all the fast trains were delayed and they helpfully diverted my Portsmouth train into platform 5. Given the 18.16 was cancelled, if I'd not caught the train I'd have had a 40 minute wait for the next time.

Looking at that pic, had they done somework on the rail before that pic was taken as it looks a little straight and clean

They would have known which track circuit the problem is within so its just a question of searching that bit, another handy advantage of track circuits over axle counters!

Some of the comments are amusing.

I do like the fact they show us these things so we can see what goes on. It's better PR than remaining silent and saying nothing.

Well I've now signed Farlington to Southampton. So now deeper into SWT land :|

Funny thing is when I was route learning this week I had to travel on the SWT Pompy to Southampton stoppers. I learned more on how to work 450/455's when chatting to staff than almost the excitements of Hamble. (2 platforms, 4 cars, narrow, signal on the up. Exit rear up, down front via the road bridge. Watch out for the ponies).

Familliarise yourself with Fareham bay platform, 377s spend a lot of time there;)

Was at Wool at 09:40ish. Train came from Weymouth direction consisting of a 450 leading a 444, which appeared to be locked out. Trains later crossed at Wareham instead of Wool.

Out of interest, how many signals are between Hampton Court Junction and Surbiton?

This morning my 8.04 Guildford train was 1 minute early at Hampton Court Junction and had to wait. Fair enough. Once it left thought it crawled to Surbiton station and arrived almost 2 minutes late. The train in front, 8.38, was a minute late leaving, which would be why. I take it trains can't run any closer due to the signal(s) between the junction and Surbiton not allowing it.
