. @northernrailorg: Due to an unusually large passenger flow 15:31 #Huddersfield to #WakefieldWestgate 16:09 will be cancelled.
.

Nortbern Rail's Twitter feed is usually sprinkled with cancelled trains but this one seems quite bizarre.

Are they actually saying they have taken a train off because there are too many passengers?

Huddersfield were playing Sheffield Wednesday on a lunchtime kick off today, so maybe something to do with that? Too many passengers wanting to travel via Wakefield to go back to Sheffield, or the unit was nicked to double up on the penistone line?

According to Realtime Trains there's a Huddersfield-Wakefield-Barnsley-Sheffield train running instead, presumably for the football supporters, which Northern don't appear to be advertising anywhere.

Greater Anglian and now Northern used 'unusually large passenger flow' this week - is this a newly invented excuse?

Happens often - passengers squash onto a pacer, guard cant get on to access to door controls, train dont move. Passengers dont get off when asked, train cancelled.

Happened to me a few weeks ago at Leeds on a Sheffield train and it ended up with btp being called to get people off.

Did you know it takes longer for 100 people with luggage to get on a train than 3 people with a shopping bag?

There's your answer...

Correct in part. The stock went on an extra service to Sheffield via Wakefield K.

Real time trains shows it went to Sheffield via Wakefield Kirkgate and Barnsley, so the service to Wakefield wasn't really cancelled, just replaced by one which was near identical.

It then ran ECS back to Huddersfield and picked up the diagram again operating the 1731 41 minutes late.

Seriously - how much flexibility is there? Take football *cringes* as an example. Hope I get these teams right - if say Leeds had an FA Cup Replay at, oh, I dunno, Barnsley?, and the game wasn't known until a week or so in advance, could units be shifted around within a week's notice to get fans to and from the game? And, if so, who would miss out, if anyone?

The problem is, using your example, there are 3 trains an hour from Barnsley to Leeds, so which ones do you strengthen?

You are still going to get all the complaints when some services turn up as the usual 2 car pacer.

Returning from the match is easier, but the carriages are likely to still be attached to whatever they were with in the morning, and might not be in place then either.

Oh, come on, I'm just picking Barnsley out of thin air as an example! - hence the question marks. Does it matter exactly where? Hull. York. Newcastle. Barrow. Does it matter? The question is how easy/hard is it for a TOC to shift units around if there's public demand at short notice??!!

Quite a big day for Northern football wise. Huddersfield v Sheffield Wednesday, Blackpool v Bolton and Blackburn v Leeds. Bit hit and miss on the strengthening a to Blackpool only saw one double pair out on BPN-MCV. There was an additional 1735 Blackburn-Leeds. Anyone know what stock formed it??

1 x158 2x155. I was on it. Quite impressed by Northern Rail's ability to find a 6-car train. Some moron did pull the pass-comm on the way back though...

The trains heading there were rammed. I felt sorry for the regular passengers. Many were left behind at intermediate stations, and I doubt they got on the trains afterwards as they would have been equally rammed.

There was a time when special trains would run. Jimmy Hill was responsible for getting specials for away games when he was manager of Coventry City.

Turning to the more civilised sport, Rugby, when Cornwall reached the County Championship final in the early nineties, one local rugby club hired an HST which ran from Penzance to Paddingdon. Western Region even decked out the inside of the carriages in black and gold

Does anyone, TOCs or clubs, run specials now or is it a thing of the past.

Chelsea are quite eager on them, they had one to Burnley back in August, and I saw one at Stoke about 4-5 years ago.

I think the pretendolino was used with Les Ross for a couple of FootEx's last year - possibly for an FA Cup final involving one of the North West clubs... I can't remember.

Scotrail operate specials occasionally for cup semi and finals. Last seasons scottish cup final was between dundee Utd and St Johnstone. 3 or 4 specials ran from dundee to Glasgow via Fife and dalmeny Winchburgh. 3 or 4 ran from perth via stirling for St Johnstone fans.

All the specials were work by 158s and 170s in 5 or 6 car formation. You needed a ticket issued by the football clubs to get on them and there was a complete ban on alcohol on the trains.

I wish there was a complete ban on alcohol on more trains. TPEs on a Friday/Saturday night are horrible sometimes with multiple groups of people pre-drinking on their way to Leeds/Manchester.

ATW often use the LHCS of "Gerald" to form an extra from Holyhead to Cardiff when the rugby matches are being played.

Until only recently, these specials were unadvertised on their website, and so I did wonder if ATW were funded from other sources for their operation.

Brighton run them occasionally when they're at home to a London team. Idea being you put the Millwall (and in the last few years, QPR and West Ham) fans all on a direct train back to central London and you don't get any of the moron element intimidating passengers on service trains or getting off in Brighton/Lewes and taking over those places.

Brighton are a brilliantly run club in many ways - they're known for their excellent care of away fans - but I didn't know that. I'm impressed; it makes sense.

EMT are pretty good at putting specials on for the football. Whenever there's any of the east midlands derbies on (Forest, Derby, Sheffield Clubs etc...) they normally pull an HST or Meridian out

It also had an awayday trip to Wembley with ex-WSMR drivers/crew for Wrexham's FA Trophy Final (which they won!)

I'm pleasantly surprised to hear that Northern put on a special for yesterday's game... Had it been publicised, my dad and brother would have used the train from Shepley as usual rather than Yorkshire Tiger... Last season's home game against Wendies was a nightmare getting back afterwards, which might have been the thinking behind the extra service this time around. Hopefully there'll be a similar arrangement for the return fixture at Hillsborough.

Any toc could say that alcohol is banned in all their services but it's pretty much unenforceable unles you have police on every train, at every station etc

That was my thinking - having observed the alcohol "ban" on LU and LO.

Happened on Saturday with the last train to Barnsley. Don't know whether BTP got involved but ended up wedged in the middle of the carriage for half an hour before everyone gave up.
