Any chance this tinpot service can take the word 'Express' out of its title?

3 late running services this morning kicked my Northern rail train into a 15 minute delay, and it happens EVERY DAY.

Does anyone that runs these services actually experience it for themselves? I seriously doubt it.

What line / service(s) do you refer to? There is a website out there that monitors the punctuality of specific services so it should be easy to get an overview of the matter.

A Southport-Manchester Airport service being delayed every day was being discussed on another forum. The cause seems to be a Victoria-Clitheroe frequently being late, meaning a Clitheroe-Victoria service is delayed (due to a signal track section at Darwen) which in turn delays a Blackpool North-Manchester Airport service and in turn delays the Southport-Manchester Airport service. Then of course even if the Victoria-Clitheroe service is on time, a delay to either the Clitheroe-Victoria or Blackpool-Airport service can still delay the Southport-Airport service.

That explanation kind of illustrates why one operator shouldn't blame another for their train being delayed, because it's a chain of events. I've certainly heard a TPE guard blaming delay on the Northern stopper in front, when the only reason the Northern service was in front and so slow was because it was crammed to the rafters with the passengers who would have caught the already-delayed TPE!

Quite often about 10 late late out of Huddersfield for late TPE services , although if it is a through service to Wigan Wallgate or Blackburn unless it leaves Huddersfield more than 10-15 minutes late it wont get reported as a late service because it has 10 mins at vic and a lot of padding between Ashton and Vic so arrives at wigan on time or within 5 minutes of time .

I think operators should blame each other internally when their trains are late . That way operators can look in to the root cause of their own delays and deal with them . Say the late running TPE services I have mentioned above are due to signaling deficiencies somewhere else , Northern has no right to address these whereas TPE does , but they will only do this if it costs them to keep holding up Northern . The same in Reverse unless Northern get charged for holding up TPE services between Bolton and Salford crescent there will be no motivation to fix the root cause of the issue .

Of course I as a guard wont make a scathing attack on TPE in an announcement because that is unprofessional . If my train is delayed by another train I will merely say we are being delayed because of another late running train . Those savvy enough will work out it is a TPE of course , and I have had passengers complaining to me in the same way the OP does that TPE's out of Huddersfield always make their train late .

Indeed. Some detective work is required. From another thread, we see Fuming's commute is Mossley to Manchester Victoria (MCV). The only delayed train on this route today was 0815 from Huddersfield, which was held at Marsden for 16 minutes (booked 0828, actual 0844), and consequently arrived 11 minutes late into MCV.

It looks like no trains went through the tunnel between 0800 and 0831, which is a very long time! I can see why they held the 0828, because if they hadn't, all the TPE services would have been delayed behind it, making the congestion even worse.

The first train to be delayed was 0637 ex-Hull, which was delayed between Brough and Gilberdyke and picked up further delay, totalling 28 mins passing Marsden. The 0603 ex-Newcastle was behind this train, it appears to have been delayed by 14 minutes at York and also was further delayed. The 0630 ex-Scarborough was 11 late leaving Scarborough and was also further delayed, and this concludes the trio of trains for which the 0828 from Marsden was held for.

Does anyone know the root cause for why those 3 trains were late? It looks like 3 separate delays that just happen to have occurred at the same time.

By no way thorough but the basics seems to be:
0637 ex Hull - delayed following 2C07 which was stuck behind 1P11 TP which was 40L due to DMU issues
0603 ex Newcastle - delayed waiting traincrew at York off 1P15 which was delayed at Scarborough - door fault
0630 ex Scarborough - door fault as above

yes, as mentioned above, I am one of the long-suffering, always waiting on the platform, passengers at Mossley, sat watching various TPE's drifting past us and feeling my life slowly ebbing away - on what seems a daily basis.

some interesting comments raised above, and don't get me wrong, I understand most of the reasoning behind it, chain of events causing further delays, etc. It's just, so... soul-destroying!

The infrastructure seems massively flawed, to the point where I am seriously considering driving further from where I live, to Oldham Mumps, and jumping on a tram, never to return.

Too much lost time being accumulated, but they'll still take my ticket money, and no doubt a new bum on the seat (if there's any available) will be filled by another mug, so who at the top really cares about the future when the money keeps rolling in?

Given TPE operate 5tph in each direction you would see a number of TPE services even if they are all running late.

However, if you feel Mossley is missing out by not being served by TPE then you may be pleased to know (if you didn't already know) that from December 2016 it is planned the Victoria-Huddersfield stopper will be withdrawn and TPE will operate a half-hourly Piccadilly-Selby/Hull semi-fasts with the first semi-fast calling at Guide Bridge, Stalybridge, Mossley, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Leeds, Selby (+ possibly Brough and Hull) and the second calling at Guide Bridge, Stalybridge, Greenfield, Marsden, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Leeds, South Milford, Selby (+ possibly Brough and Hull)

Being that I work over that route pretty frequently I do feel for people that commute between the Greenfield/Mosley and Manchester , given that as I said a lot of trains that run over that route now run through to the likes of Southport and Wigan the train does not get reported as late until it arrives at Wigan or Southport late , so given that it stands for 5-10 minutes at Victoria and the padding between Ashton and Vic the service does not actually arrive in Wigan late as many times as it leaves Huddersfield late . But this is obviously no use to Greenfield/Moseley/Staly or Ashton Commuters into Manchester for whom the train will be a late service .

The problem with you withdrawing revenue because it seems Management at Northern dont care about commuters from Mosley is that the railway is so fragmented that Northern is not really in control of that service , they cant change the rules that the signaler at Huddersfield follows in regulating services leaving Huddersfield , and they cant change anything at TPE to make their services run on time . So even if Management at Northern did care about the service leaving Huddersfield late there is not a lot they can do .

I think management do care about services being late because it affects their punctuality stats, which can result in season ticket holders being compensated.

The action they can take if services are always late is to increase dwell times or add in extra recovery time. They did this with Mid-Cheshire services for the reason that with passenger numbers being double what they were when Northern took over it's not possible for services to be operated to the same timings using the same type of units.

So what you're saying is Bolton needs grade separated junctions on the South side? ;)

Which is why those services I mentioned are padded between Ashton and Victoria , and stand at Victoria for 5-10 minutes . As often as they leave Huddersfield late , it is rare to arrive at Victoria before the service continues on towards Wigan .

The only problem with that is that it does nothing to help passengers like the OP for whom the service is late for the way they use it . I think that this is an issue with the way delays are reported , in that the service is only considered late if it arrives late . `I think some common sense should be used and if the train passes through a major station on its route its performance should be monitored as if it terminated at this station

Extra dwell time on that line would be helpful to keep to time during peak time out of Manchester in the afternoon . At Mosley and Greenfield the train empties out and if you have a 142 that can take some time, even with a 150 you are there for a few minutes whilst all of the passengers get off .

Reading that above, that's three start-of-service maintenance issues by FTPE.

Been a few reports of maintenance problems of late, hardly worthy of the Golden Spanner Award sticker still on several units.

It would appear that the main culprit here is 1P15 06.30 Scarborough-Liverpool, which, on 4 of the past 5 weekdays, has lost time each day between York and Garforth. Consequently, it leaves Huddersfield some 4-5 minutes late rather than its booked time of 08.11, which results in 2F89 08.15 Huddersfield-Wigan departing late. It also seems 2F89 normally loses a further 3-4 minutes between Huddersfield and Marsden, presumably due to either signalling or leaf fall.

The slowest TransPennine 'Express' route is between Doncaster and Grimsby. The train has a max speed of 55mph for the South Humberside Mainline and it's a long line. This is because of very heavy freight usage.

On a train...somewhere!

Just had a quick look at this one ... all of the delays to 1P15 have been reactionary to other incidents in the wider area, some FTPE, some NT, some unexplained. When you start digging it's often a massive spiders-web of delays (I've had a train delayed between Peterborough and Huntingdon today due to issues at Drax - such instances aren't uncommon!).

The additional path in the FTPE timetable since May has meant service recovery can be difficult even from minor incidents. Furthermore, they operate over a lot of infrastructure and interface with a huge number of TOCs. The distances covered also means that small cumulative delays have a bigger impact - which is not neccessarily the case for NT's shorter journeys.

As mentioned the Trans-Pennine route also suffers from this time of year due to leaf fall and associated low adhesion, and with some of the gradients involved and many busy stretches of railway it's not the time of year to be rushing along behind slower stopping services.

I have, for some time, believed that the railway, and particularly the Trans-Pennine route, is far too clogged up. We constantly hear about capacity problems, but the simple answer in the case of the Trans-Pennine line is to run longer but less frequent trains. Do we really need 5 TPE services an hour on this line? Surely 3 trains of double the length would be better, providing some leeway for delays and therefore a more reliable service. Am I the only person who thinks the UK's railways are obsessed with frequency at the expense of reliability?

I agree with you absolutely! There IS an alternative way to operating a passenger railway which is the way it is done in almost every other country, with less frequent but RELIABLE longer trains. The way TPE is run at the moment they might as well tear up the timetable and run it as a tramway, but of course they want to rip us off with Inter-City fares advertising a product which they cannot and have no intention of delivering. They did not HAVE to introduce the 5th tph making an already congested route even less reliable. They could have used the 185s released by electric working of the MIA-Scotland trains by providing 6-car formations between Liverpool and York.

The Greenfield services is less likely to be held for faster trains when it is run by TPE as proposed, and is planned to call at:

Hull - Selby - Brough - South Milford - Leeds - Dewsbury - Huddersfield - Marsden - Greenfield - Stalybridge - Guide Bridge - Manchester Piccadilly.

So, same number of stops as today to Manchester, but better for people who want Piccadilly and connections from there, but worse for people who would rather go to Victoria.

No doubt there will be additional peak trains, as today, but likely also to be operated by TPE rather than Northern.

^^ Excellent detective work ^^

This Forum's knowledge and ability to decipher things is brilliant :D

The infrastructure seems massively flawed, to the point where I am seriously considering driving further from where I live, to Oldham Mumps, and jumping on a tram, never to return

This will go against the Forum mantra that "trams are bad and anyone would rather have a train over a tram" (especially when the train station is closer to home than the tram stop)!

Good point

even if Management at Northern did care about the service leaving Huddersfield late there is not a lot they can do .

I don't know - it depends if Northern are being compensated (due to their service being delayed by NR signal staff) by more than the cost of compensating their own passengers.

Remember when GNER's business plan went wrong when Railtrack/ Network Rail (can't remember which) improved the infrastructure on the ECML so that the compensation payments to the TOC went down (compensation that GNER had been banking on!)...

The slowest TransPennine 'Express' route is between Doncaster and Grimsby. The train has a max speed of 55mph for the South Humberside Mainline and it's a long line. This is because of very heavy freight usage.

100mph 185s are wasted on the Cleethorpes route!

(not sure about the "South Humberside Main Line" though!)

I have, for some time, believed that the railway, and particularly the Trans-Pennine route, is far too clogged up. We constantly hear about capacity problems, but the simple answer in the case of the Trans-Pennine line is to run longer but less frequent trains. Am I the only person who thinks the UK's railways are obsessed with frequency at the expense of reliability?

True.

But with the obsession about giving Manchester Airport a direct service to as many places as possible, and the various different eastern branches to the current TPE map (not including Sunderland which was chopped off a few years ago)... it's going to be very hard to rip the timetable up and give us a :"longer but less frequent" Transpennine service.

Look at the complaints that we have on here about the proposed reduction in service between X and Y - even when there are precious few people travelling between them!

Another point is that the timetables in northern England have generally been a form of Buckaroo/ Jenga - adding more and more bits on to the top of the structure (rather than starting with a blank sheet of paper and coming up with a more organised timetable).

The way TPE is run at the moment they might as well tear up the timetable and run it as a tramway

Since the people of Herdings Park and Leighton Road in Sheffield have to make do with only a half hourly (Purple Route) service on their tram route, they'd be very envious of the kind of "turn up and go" frequencies on the railways!

(I don't know if there are any other tram routes in the UK less frequent than the "every twelve minute" benchmark in Manchester?)

They could have used the 185s released by electric working of the MIA-Scotland trains by providing 6-car formations between Liverpool and York

Normally I'll defend multiple units against the nostalgic "loco hauled was better" mantra...

...but I've got to accept that one major advantage over loco hauled is that three "spare" Mk3 coaches could be split between three other rakes so that they all saw an increase in capacity...

...whereas one "spare" three coach 185 can't be divided, so has to be used in an "all or nothing" way. IF we are going to use some of the spare 185s for a "fast" Liverpool - Manchester service then I don't know how we could have easily used the remaining spare 185s.

Six coaches on the Liverpool - York corridor sounds good, but would portion working be suitable at the busy York station? Six coaches certainly aren't needed at Middlesbrough/ Manchester Airport (and not at Scarborough for most of the year). Sending six coaches all the way to Newcastle means them being a long way from the "core" for a couple of hours (and, really, the East Coast/ Cross Country franchises should be dealing with any additional capacity from York to Newcastle). Meanwhile, on South TPE, we are just grateful to see the previous two-coach 170 services replaced by three coach 185s - we are a humble lot

The fifth service per hour is a messy compromise, but I think that any "solution" would have been one (unless we have the guts to take the "rip it up and start again" approach to the timetable).

Croydon Tramlink Route 1 and Route 4 run every 15 minutes.
Also many national rail lines in London that would do anything to have the turn up and go frequency of the Tube :D.

Why should XC be any more involved in dealing with additional capacity from York to Newcastle than TPE. Don't Liverpool and Manchester have just as strong a claim to fast direct Newcastle trains as, say, Sheffield and Derby? Actually, isn't TPE now just a sort of second XC operation?

Can you actually rip up the timetable and start again with the sort of railway we now have? The re-casting of the ECML timetable two or three years ago shewed just how difficult it is even to start on such an exercise, because you can't rip up the timetable for just one operator.

Has anyone looked at the document from Stoke pressing for HST2 to go there rather than Crewe in the first instance? They suggest one or two trains an hour to Leeds via Stoke and Stockport, but they have no discussion as to how extra traffic could be worked over the trans-Pennine line.

tbtc, you ask for frequent tramways, Nottingham express tramway is every 6mins and is set to be made more frequent when the extension opens.
As for the TPE service to Cleethorpes, it may waste the speed capabillities of the 185s and double 170s but it is needed for the high passenger volumes. Since routes to Birmingham stopped it's the only route with more than 1car every 2hours. And over 8,000 have signed the pettition in Grimsby to save the line which the DfT are planning to replace with the hourly 2car Scunthorpe to Sheffield Pacer which is even slower and also packed.

Just a idea, but can HSTs made redundant with the Intercity Express Program and Midland and Greatwestern mainline electification be sent to Transpennine and Cross Country lines? As I cannot think of anywhere else in desperate need of them when they are replaced in the near future.

I thought that the HSTs are now likely to be going to inter-city routes in Scotland.

Although they would bring a huge improvement in the quality of the passenger environment over existing TPE provision, and provide more seats, there could be a problem with increased station dwell times with only 2 slam doors per carriage. Would be good for XC though as the small number of HSTs that they currently use offer the only opportunity for a civilised journey on their routes, compared to the horrible noisy smelly overcrowded Vogagers.
