To be fair I think we all agree the Metro is a fantastic service and does rather well on most occasions, personally I don't like to 'have a go' at the system in fact I like to complement it as it is overall very good however on the flip side we all probably agree that nexus management isn't the best (pop card...)it could be and most of the moans and groans are real concerns, often if I complain it will be about the front line staff who don't know how to work with the public, this isn't a issue for the Metro itself but it doesn't look well on the system if they are being cheeky to those who pay for the service and want to know information.
Also regarding the PA system strange things are happening! The awful man is now gone I believe and now most of the directional aids are gone for example:
Regent:'This train is for all stations to South Hylton via newcastle, the next station is South Gosforth change here for trains to the coast from Platform 2' which is now 'the next station is south Gosforth' however going towards South Gosforth from Ilford road remains unchanged.
Monument in both directions is now just 'the next station is Monument'
'Change here for all local bus services' remains the same
So the big question is, what is Nexus doing? Getting rid of those announcements is crazy! So my theory is they are enhancing the lady's voice over putting the new man into service as I cannot fathom out why they have made this change, after all many people do get confused, especially at Monument.
Finally most platforms now just say 'anding (that's correct not standing) at platform 2 is for Airport' and I noticed at Gateshead it said this instead of 'then next train to arrive upon platform 2 is for...'
Has anyone else noticed this and knows the reason for it?
I was thinking this myself. I could have sworn the announcement for Heworth had changed, as well as a few others but obviously I wasn't recording so couldn't listen to it again to see if it had changed or it was just me thinking it had.
As for it saying 'anding instead of standing is because the first part of the announcement is often missed because it comes into quickly. It varies from station to station though.
Replacement fleet is included in the modernisation programme but not until phase 3 of the programme which is yet to be approved, even if Nexus applied to have new trains, I highly doubt we will be enjoying a new fleet of trains at this moment with all the various complications and usual delays that we seem to get when new stock is ordered and then delivered.
What I am concerned about is the date for a suppose new fleet to arrive is keep getting put back, I'm sure 2023 was originally planned, then 2026, now 2030. Its took long and I'm sure I read in one of the ITA files in the past that yet another refurbishment is not ruled out but stressed this was an option as a very last resort. I wish Nexus is not so obsessed about these ambitious projects such as street tram running and just concentrate with what they got and what they need to get done.
On a positive note, there is some signs the modernisation programme is worth the money spents as failures such as points failures are very very rare and the ride on newly laid track is much improved but sadly reliability on the trains is still poor but one must consider how often do they encounter a delay on a journey, in my case, its very rare and I travel on the Metro quite a lot(admittedly during the peaks and through the core of the system). That said, if you look at the total broader picture, then no doubt the amount of trains being withdrawn from service in say a 5 day period is no doubt too high for Nexus liking.
Not until Phase 3 and it's still not even finalised, plus the fact that that is in 2030 when the current stock will be almost 20 years older than it was made for!
I'm all for extensions, especially re-opening the leamside down towards Washington with a new depot / trainshed near Pelaw. Nexus seem to be really wanting to go for Newcastles West End which simply is ridiculous. Trams will only get held up in current traffic or if given own lanes then they will cause more traffic, and the current buses are good enough and run frequent enough. If it was me I would focus on current railway alignments (or former alignments) to be used as extensions.
Slightly off-topic but I have a friend who works as an accountant for a pretty large company in London and he reckons that if Scotland go independent Newcastle and the North will see a huge surge in companies moving. Now if we don't have adequate transportation then why would those companies move here when they could go to Manchester or Leeds (granted, Leeds is probably in just as much of a mess if not worse than we are).
Despite what Nexus have said the will do, the male announcer has not been phased in yet and I don't know if 4038 has still got the male PA's or not. 4047(was 4064 but after refurbishment, its now got the female's voice again) is the other unit with the male announcer but I have not been on this unit for a while now so no idea if the male announcer is still on there or not. Of course make sure 4047 is the lead car because if its the other car leading, you will get the females voice although the boards will still say "Next station is...."
Don't worry he's still there, but the announcements are turned off - he may have been removed from the actual announcements and not yet replaced. He still says 'Doors Closing' though.

Maybe if there are any drivers lurking, they could let us know
Why do people dislike the pop card system? I love it - so easy to renew your ticket and helps to stop fare evasion.
And yeah I have noticed the PA system is never on on the yellow-line morning rush hour trains anymore.
Finally I don't want an announcement every 30 seconds that you're stopped, it would be annoying. I've never heard anybody start to get worried about delays of that length - they only need to make an announcement when it is a 'true' delay e.g. train broken down.
*rant time* Okay okay, I'll keep calm. Easy to renew. Pfft, yeah right. Here is my experience. Still waiting for a response mind

How often are you stopped for more than 30 seconds though. I bet it is very very rare. Even in the peak the only time you may be stopped for a while is outside Pelaw waiting for the platform to become available or waiting for the St James bound train to pass at Pelaw Junction but even then it's not 30 seconds. Next time you're stopped unexpectedly count roughly how long you're stopped and I bet you will be surprised just how long those seconds actually are!
Regarding the on screen announcements, I know the peak services don't have them often, but all 3 MetroCars I went on today (a mix of old and new) did not have the extras so to say, I noticed this a few days ago, I hope they aren't prattling around with the woman's words without making beneficial changes.
I think they've sneaked the bloke out of service, or he is the slowest role out ever (might take the same time as the pop cards  )
The pop cards don't work, under 16 CAT tickets aren't streamlined, many people are uneducated on how to use them, key features such as credit on the card are about 4 years late etc. it's all good for your year saver for the metro only, but if your ticket is cross network ie bus and metro, it fails miserably even thought the card was designed to work on both
The women is fine as is, with the exception of one or two stations where she mis-pronounces them but most locals don't care, and those who are disabled and require the announcements will likely understand what is meant, but then again most who can't hear the announcements tell staff who then alert the driver who in turn makes a special announcement announcing the station etc. themselves.
It took them a good few years to roll the women out didn't it? I certainly hope it's not the same, although I imagine if they were going to use him they would be putting him on the refurbs.
And there's another Nexus failure. They didn't integrate the Pop card system properly. Northern staff will finally be getting phones that are capable of reading them but you still can't pay for a journey with it on the train. Pay As You Go was supposed to be launched by now (and that was at the incredibly set back date) but hasn't been.
i dont know if its just me being sad,but part of me will miss the rainbow of colours that metro had for
liveries,i also have mixed view on north shields metro station too
It was nice, but I quite like the new livery as long as they don't go changing it or adding advert vinyls that stay on and degrade in quality over time because they're left on too long. Better to have a uniform fleet in the same colours etc. in my view.
North Shields could really do with some plants/plant boxes because the platforms are so big it just looks odd there being nothing to break it up. As for the refurb of other stations the paint at Jarrow is already peeling off on one of the railings showing the old red paint through. I do like the refurbished stations though.
Anyway, I'll shut up now :P
