How our TFL able to afford this? Is it simply due to the vast numbers that use public transport in London compared to anywhere else in the country?

It's happening due to the rebuild of Victoria Underground station - currently the ticket office is dangerously overcrowded due to the vast numbers of people needing to buy separate Underground tickets / Oyster cards having arrived on train from Gatwick Airport.

TfL also funded:

  • Oyster retail windows for Southern in Victoria station
  • Ambassadors and extra staff at Gatwick Airport station to encourage passengers to choose the 'Travelcard' option from the ticket machines

As a result of the Victoria Station Upgrade project which is now underway, capacity at Victoria Underground station, particularly in and around the ticket halls, is limited and will continue to be so as the project proceeds. In order to reduce the number of customers queuing to purchase London Underground tickets at Victoria station, and the congestion and crowding caused by this which directly impacts on the operation of the station, a small number of CIAs have been provided at Gatwick Airport station. The remit of these CIAs is to approach customers at the National Rail ticket machines and enquire as to whether they intend to use London Underground services from Victoria station. If this is their intention, the CIA will advise them on how to purchase a ticket which includes travel on the Underground. Consequently, when the customer arrives at Victoria Underground station, they are able to proceed immediately through the gateline rather than having to queue for another ticket. This helps ease congestion at the station.

The Victoria Station Upgrade project is part of a huge and essential programme to modernise the Tube’s ageing infrastructure - vital to cope with a growing population and to support the economic development and growth of the Capital and the UK. The overall programme includes the introduction of new track and signalling and the rebuilding of some of our most important stations. By the end of the current programme there will be 30 per cent more capacity.

Oyster use to Gatwick was only going to be a temporary measure but I believe an agreement has been reached to enable permanent use, now that Govia plans for a wider Oyster rollout.

There are long and very slow-moving queues at all the ticket windows at Victoria, particularly the three Oyster ones.

This I know, I was merely commenting on the discussion between yourself and Deerfold ;)

Any idea what the welcome packs contain?

Perhaps they contain some of that nice blue tape for us to cover First up on all our uniform..

That's the logo I was talking about, hadn't seen it posted in here earlier, but it'll be on both the new websites.

While I don't know for sure that doesn't make sense as the two brands are having seperate website.

As for the confusion, well Brighton, Cambridge, Bedford, Peterbrough, East Croydon all have one branding but multiple TOCs calling there without any claims of confusion so I don't understand why a single person would find it confusing on other GN station.

I can't see anyone claiming passengers will be confused (though you keep saying they won't I'm not sure who you're arguing against).

All the stations you list have two TOCs. We're talking about one TOC with multiple brands.

Couldn't they install more machines in and around the station? Perhaps 'express' machines with a limited range of tickets?

Presumably when Oyster comes to Gatwick Airport, there will be the facility to buy an Oyster and pre-load credit from there? Or maybe airlines could offer them for sale during flights coming in (apologies if any already do that).

In the future all the modern trains will have far clearer displays at the front, side and inside. With upgraded screens on platforms hopefully it won't matter so much what is printed on the side.

But the current trains can be terrible. Not sure how may 321 displays are now upgraded, or if they're always on, but the flip dot ones they had at first were near impossible to read. The 317s are more likely going to show corrupted graphics. Some 365s won't have the screens on at all, but presumably will once refurbished.

Ultimately, it shouldn't matter what is written on the train if passengers can get clear information before boarding and also when getting on the train. Being the same TOC, whether TL or GN, it shouldn't be a ticketing issue (as, say, getting on a First train instead of AGA, or FCC over Southern) and you can't - currently - get advance tickets so can't get caught out that way.

Before trains cross from one to the other, separate branding will be fine. Perhaps we'll see some tweaks between now and 2018 anyway. And by then, a lot more people will understand what's going on - presumably lots of information will be made available in the run up to what will be quite a radical change of timetables and available destinations.

Between the parallel lines
I can't say all that much about the machines at Gatwick/London Victoria, but suffice to say there are many options as to how capable you can make them, even depending on the time of day, etc. Some of those options may not currently be known or available to all front-line staff who maintain them on a daily basis - or indeed known to myself, of course! In other words, limited ranges of tickets, collection-only machines etc. can all be set up. It's just a matter of sourcing reliable-enough kit at the right price!

Gatwick Airport has prepaid Visitor Oyster cards available, but they are sometimes out of stock, so visitors are often best-advised to get a normal one if they can bear the further queuing somewhere in London.

Some airlines already offer several different tickets onboard (to different destinations/with different operators) in the form of receipt printouts. They do look a bit dodgy from the perspective of correctly advertising the NRCoC, but that's for another thread. I think a handful also dispense prepaid Oyster cards as well.

Your the one who mentioned confusion in regards to my poster over station branding.

Those are GN stations. Thameslink branding will only be put on stations solely served by Thameslink (ie MML etc)

Did you read Physics34's post - they said "from 2018" which is when Thameslink services start using those stations (but they will still be served by some GN services to Kings X). If you're not going to mention Thameslink on services that go through the Thameslink core that'll be confusing.

All the stations you list have two TOCs. We're talking about one TOC with multiple brands.

New Southern Railway has two brands under one TOC.

Why am imagining an Airplane style farce with the TfL "assistants" and the Gatwick Express "assistants" running a small war on the concourse?!

Everything I've seen suggests a single website accessible through separate URLs for the two different brands. The holding page on the new URLs suggests this too. This does make sense, at least initially, in presenting themselves as a single company.

Yeah I think they have significantly less machines than at nearby Waterloo. There are a few collection-only ones, and a few out of use every time I end up there. While a lot of the remaining ones are slow to respond.

All pushing to get closer to the passengers as they arrive. Probably end up with them on the tarmac...

Long term it makes less sense. Note the current situation with the two brands under the New Southern Railway which shows how Govia works its brands separately. Also note that GTR have already announced that staffing wise there is a separate structure with Thameslink and Great Northern having separate customer services leadership to create focus on individual routes. Its clear GTR want focus on a route basis.

No I didn't. What I said was:

You replied to my comments over branding so may you confused what I was stating.

It's "You're" by the way.

I'm dyslexic but you understand what I meant anyways despite being petty.

Two brands which at times they're desperate to present as being different TOCs.

They are two separate brands.

I'm confused now - what does this mean?

I'm sorry you thought I was being petty. I was trying to be helpful.

Having quoted me saying:

I really don't understand how you're arguing with me.

They are two separate brands.

Yes. Just like I said.

Basically we've been discussion separate things with me talking about stations in reply to another poster and you about train branding, hence our confusion.

Ah ok, didn't quite come across as that.

I really don't understand how you're arguing with me.

Looks to be like we have crossed wires at some point.

Wouldn't surprise me, the website holding page goes as far as saying that "Trains, posters, leaflets and staff uniforms will be in our look - many by our first day of service". Suggests a train may be in 'our' colours by Sunday.

do you reckon that the FCC vinyls have been removed and replaced by white vinyls? I cant see how they would release a train without finishing the painting on the whole thing.

Will we see the first re branded unit on the first Thameslink service with the first driver to drive the first Thameslink train?

Isn't it ironic how it's come full circle on thameslink with the original govia toc being thameslink and this one being publicised as thameslink?
