How our TFL able to afford this? Is it simply due to the vast numbers that use public transport in London compared to anywhere else in the country?
It's happening due to the rebuild of Victoria Underground station - currently the ticket office is dangerously overcrowded due to the vast numbers of people needing to buy separate Underground tickets / Oyster cards having arrived on train from Gatwick Airport.
TfL also funded:
- Oyster retail windows for Southern in Victoria station
- Ambassadors and extra staff at Gatwick Airport station to encourage passengers to choose the 'Travelcard' option from the ticket machines
As a result of the Victoria Station Upgrade project which is now underway, capacity at Victoria Underground station, particularly in and around the ticket halls, is limited and will continue to be so as the project proceeds. In order to reduce the number of customers queuing to purchase London Underground tickets at Victoria station, and the congestion and crowding caused by this which directly impacts on the operation of the station, a small number of CIAs have been provided at Gatwick Airport station. The remit of these CIAs is to approach customers at the National Rail ticket machines and enquire as to whether they intend to use London Underground services from Victoria station. If this is their intention, the CIA will advise them on how to purchase a ticket which includes travel on the Underground. Consequently, when the customer arrives at Victoria Underground station, they are able to proceed immediately through the gateline rather than having to queue for another ticket. This helps ease congestion at the station.
The Victoria Station Upgrade project is part of a huge and essential programme to modernise the Tubes ageing infrastructure - vital to cope with a growing population and to support the economic development and growth of the Capital and the UK. The overall programme includes the introduction of new track and signalling and the rebuilding of some of our most important stations. By the end of the current programme there will be 30 per cent more capacity.
Oyster use to Gatwick was only going to be a temporary measure but I believe an agreement has been reached to enable permanent use, now that Govia plans for a wider Oyster rollout.
