I thought the e200s (449**) were ex Glasgow, some via Plymouth, then Cymru, and then to Bristol @ Hengrove. Don't know if any have been to Taunton (some were at BR but are now at TN). With so many homes, no wonder they've not been cared for!

Ah right , thanks for the correction, both.

Also, apologies if this is going to annoy everyone who never noticed this before , but why do Bath put no smoking signs right in the middle of every single window on their vehicles? Surely one or two in the corners of a couple of windows or on the back of the driver's cab would suffice?

Bristol did as well at one point, some still have a few, although most have been peeled off by now. If you put them in the corner of the window ( bottom left or right) no ones going to see it!

It doesn't stop people though, I was on a night bus a few weeks back and most of the people on the top deck had lit up!

Probably history. When smoking stickers were first applied by NBC (late 70s/early 80s), they were placed in the centre of the window. That said, on single decks, some firms put them on every row of seats but restricted to the first 6 rows. On ECW bodies, it proudly said "Smokers are requested to occupy rear seats" - how things change!

Read what I said. The 312 is a minibus service that you're wanting to extend to the bus station - why when the 73 does that job more frequently? That's what is increasing the PVR when really anything extra will be put on the core service Thornbury - Cribbs - Bristol

Also, you're advocating getting rid of the 224 by knitting services together that will considerably increase journey times for those passengers from Dursley and Berkeley. As you said "I'm sure people would rather have a longer regular service than no service what so ever, and routing via Thornbury should increase passenger numbers." I'm saying that you'll probably knacker that commuter trade and what benefit is there for a regular service that takes 50% longer?

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

Correction - they were on Portway; you can see the green paint showing through in some places. L Ashton P&R were the P-UFB Olympians.

60916 was hard at work on 28 today as I passed it en route to Minehead. 40590 is the first to leave Bath?
Of course they were on Portway P&R not Long Ashton !!!
I think the green paint you can see is the remains of the Taunton-Burnham route branding for the 21. The lettering was removed a couple of months ago and some were working from Bridgwater with a green band above the windows.

The green was underneath the flaking pink near the headlights. I saw it, thought "what's that" and then immediately twigged that it was from their P&R days ;)

Just thought I'd report back on my trip to Bristol today.

Arrived at Newport bus station and realised the X7 now departs from the Kingsway, just in front of the Riverfront Theatre. 32685 (WX 56 HKA) did the honours of the 1015 Newport to Bristol service, which left with about six people on board (I expected it to be a lot busier than this).

From my last experience of this route, when it was the 14/X14 ran by Stagecoach, it seemed to take FOREVER, faffing around through Magor and Chepstow etc, but now it goes straight on the M4 from Newport to Chepstow, does a brief tour of Chepstow before going on the Old Severn Crossing on the M48, before going to Cribbs Causeway and straight into Bristol via the M32. I decided to get off at Cribbs Causeway, where we arrived at 1110, and was going to get the 1141 X5 to Weston-super-Mare, on one of the Enviro 400s. However, much to my absolute dismay, this particular journey was in the hands of Volvo B7RLE 69459 (WX 59 BZN), which is usually a resident on the W1. Knowing my luck, the 1241, 1341 and every other X5 were probably Enviro 400s! I refused to travel on one for an hour and forty-five minutes, as that's too much even for me, and I haven't got a problem with them.

The journey on 32685 went quickly to Chepstow, where HUNDREDS got on! It really is popular. The town centre is also incredibly narrow and hilly at some points too!

Instead, I decided to get to Bristol and get the X1 instead. In order to not waste too much time, I opted to get the quickest bus from Cribbs Causeway to the bus station. I had just alighted off the most obvious service (the X7), so that was out of the question. The second option was the 309, but I couldn't see it anywhere. The third quickest service, which happens to be the quickest local stopping service, to me is actually the 75, as it just goes through Filton and down Gloucester Road, unlike the 76 which fluffs all around Henbury and Southmead first. I immediately opted out the 1, 2, 40 and 73 from my list, as they do a little tour as well.

So the 75 it was, and 37601 (WX 58 JXK) had the honours of working the 1144 departure to Hengrove, and it arrived five minutes early at both Gipsy Patch Lane and Muller Road. There were THREE people on the top deck throughout the whole journey into the centre.

Unfortunately, by this point, my battery was very low, so it was going to be very tricky to continue onwards unless I found somewhere to charge my phone. I got off at The Haymarket and went to Starbucks for lunch to charge up my phone, and was going to catch the 1400 or 1420 X1 service.

However, much to my absolute horror (the second shock of today; 69459 being the first), I found out that the last X7 direct to Newport was at 1545!! How pathetic is that? Considering the next service, at 1715, terminates in Magor?! Surely it wouldn't hurt to let that (or even the 1800, which currently terminates at Chepstow) run to Newport?!

I had a look to see if there were any other buses from Chepstow to Newport, with Stagecoach's X74 and Newport Transport's 73 service, but they all finish early too, so the only other option I would have had would have been to pay for a single on the train home, from either Bristol or Weston, but that's just wasting more money really.

Sadly, I had to completely scrap my trip to Weston, which really irritated me as 33829 worked the 1520 X1 departure from Bristol, looking absolutely WONDERFUL!

In the end I did a spot of retail therapy in Bristol and got the 1545 back home, which was in the hands of 32684 (WX 56 HJZ). Again, only three people were upstairs, with a few more downstairs.

The X14 used to go straight up Park Row and Whiteladies Road, before heading up through Westbury-on-Trym to Cribbs Causeway (in a similar fashion to the current 1 service now). However, it now goes straight up the M32, which make a LOT more sense! At Cribbs Causeway, with a departure time of 1615, it was again HEAVING! So it seems that the busiest section of the route, by far, is between Chepstow and Cribbs Causeway, as everyone also alighted at Chepstow and it was dead to Newport again!

We arrived into Newport a little bit behind schedule of 1705 (was about 1715), and I then had two more journeys to make home to Cardiff: one on the X30 and another on a local bus in Cardiff. I saw TWO Newport Bus Enviro 400s (400 and 404) on the X30 this morning, so I really thought I had my chances of one going home, but no, just the typical Scania OmniCity instead! I was very disappointed as I hadn't had a ride on a single Enviro 400! Even more annoyingly, the 1710 service 30 departure to Cardiff (Cardiff Bus operated), was 471, a double decker! Oh well.

By this point, time was ticking so I decided to get the train back to Cardiff, and I caught the 1752 to Maesteg, which was in the hands of 158821.

All in all a great day out, despite the lack of battery and 69459 somehow wandering off from the W1 onto the X5.

My next plan is as follows:
0915 Newport to Bristol 1035 (X7)
1200 Bristol to Weston 1256 (X1)
1345 Weston to Cribbs 1526 (X5)
1615 Cribbs to Newport 1705 (X7)

Then, I'd like to cover some journeys in Bath, such as the X39, 178, 184, 231, 376, 379 (although I haven't been to Bath before so I wouldn't have a clue where I was going), and also some of the north-eastern services, such as the 81, 82, X46, X47 and X49.

The majority of the Bristol city services have been done, although I'm still lacking slightly on the east and south of the city (the 6, 7, 24, 36, 42, 43, 48, 49, 50, 51, 75, 76 and the 90 come to mind!)

Some interesting observations from today include 47438, 69454 and 69456 on the 75/76, 37003 on the X46 and a rather shabby looking 66100 on the 376, working the 1525 Bristol to Street.

Still no deckers on the 70 though sadly. I give up now. Just going to cherish the X1 and the X5 for now!

Bath is very easy to get around as virtually everything (including city services) stops at the bus station or on Dorchester Street just outside. To make it even easier, the railway station is next door to the bus station!

There are also several good maps in the bus station and the staff in the information centre are pretty helpful.

Yeah Bath isn't so much the issue, it's the other places such as Frome, Radstock and Midsomer Norton that I think I'd get lost in!

Frome - everything goes via the market place. Radstock - everything goes from 3 stops in a line near the Victoria Hall. Only in MSN is there potential confusion!!

I know that each has their own motives etc for travelling but I never try to opt for a service on vehicle type as all too often, things don't turn out as you'd expect!!

Really? I could swear some of them have Somerset County Council stickers on the windows, I may be going mad though! I'm surprised they are in poor condition as Hengrove vehicles usually are well maintained. Maybe they didn't bother as they knew the Enviros would only ever be there temporarily?

Hi,
I think the Enviro you may be referring to could be 44921 Vic.
This was once at Bridgwater Depot so may be carrying a notice from way back then although it did reside at Hengrove prior to moving to Bath.
The other 3 Bridgwater examples moved down to Taunton and are now in Bos's Green Livery. Hope that helps,
Mike Russell [henairs]

Charge up your phone, take a spare battery, and fire up Google Maps. If you're on Android I use an app called Catch That Bus (yellow logo) which does both realtime and timetabled departures for bus stops overlaid onto Google Maps. Also Google Maps on Android and through web browsers now shows timetabled departures - zoom into a stop, tap on it, and then tap on the stop name.

I normally am pretty good with my phone, I just had to use it quite a bit to check bus/train times.

I didn't know Google Maps showed timetabled departures, which is pretty good to be fair! Although for some reason it doesn't pick up departures from some stops, but maybe this is just a minor bug which can be fixed.

Very handy for my next trip to Bath, which will be at the end of July/beginning of August.

Update on Wells depot buses:-

Of what I understand, 66353 and 66356 have moved back into Bath.
46603 is still going on 161.
I spotted nearly all buses at Wells today, except 2 - 66100 and 69440. If anyone sees these two, please let me know, as I was told today by a bus driver that another bus has moved back into Bath today - could this be 66100 at last??
The rest all looks the same, however I saw 66107 on the 376 (bit odd).

Bath:-
I can't see any difference in the buses in Bath. I was there for about an hour today and saw virtually all the E200's and ALX400's. The only things I spotted were 57000 is still going (on 10 today) and 66355 on 5 - doesn't that bus look awful. It's a huge comparison to 66730/1 which look really good, along with 66733 in its new colours (looking very smart now). What have Bridgwater done to these buses?! 40591 and a few B6s are still in there.

I guess the 663** B7Ls haven't been painted since coming off the Portway P&R - was that 2005? At least the 54 plates have been painted about 2009? That said, the 669** B7RLEs have seen a paintbrush til the last few months

I think two had a mid-life refresh in 2008, 60895/60910 IIRC, but apart from that none of the ex York or Bath B7Ls have been touched!

A few odd sightings today, a 43 on a short working this AM peak to Lawrence Hill, dumping a bus load of passengers! This PM peak a short working on the 2 to Broad Walk.

I had a Bath Streetlite that failed after an emergency stop, luckily we were able to roll down hill about 100m to the bus stop, after a few attempts it jumped into life again.

Indeed, very interesting, thanks for info.
Didn't realise they were coming so soon, but then I'm suddenly aware it is July! Does that mean their arrival is imminent?

Fair enough but they may as well extend that service to Newport anyway, as particularly for the OAPs and the disabled they can use their Welsh Concessionary Bus Pass for free and to be fair Newport is a much larger settlement than Magor. I don't really understand the point in terminating it there when Newport is literally only about ten minutes further.

Some bad news for you I'm afraid, 66100 has been on 377 all day. 0915/1215/1515 departures from Yeovil.

Ooh, thanks for this!

10 minutes? Literally? More like 20 mins at the very least! X74 takes longer than that.

Fact is that you witnessed the 1545 bus empty at Chepstow. There isn't the trade; end to end trade is sparse as you witnessed because of the competing rail service. Instead, it is more Chepstow to Cribbs, or Chepstow to Newport, or Magor to Bristol (lots of different flows). And as you mention, even the X74 and 73 don't have journeys later because the demand isn't there.

Also, the remuneration is being cut so even less inclination to run services for the benefit of day tripping pensioners!

Yeah I know. I noticed it today as well. Bit annoying! Thought that had finally gone.

I think 69440 (one of the 59 plate Eclipses) has gone - is this being refurbished/repainted?? This was the one that had a car, van and lorry imbedded into the engine at Hallatrow last year. I know it was being repaired for quite sometime and it might still be damaged. Any ideas anyone?

Ah right , thanks for the correction, both.

Also, apologies if this is going to annoy everyone who never noticed this before , but why do Bath put no smoking signs right in the middle of every single window on their vehicles? Surely one or two in the corners of a couple of windows or on the back of the driver's cab would suffice?

69253 has them sensibly placed in the corners, must've been done properly in West Yorkshire!

It's on the other Webberbus thread but in summary....

An additional 8 on the PVR shown in brackets
29 increased to hourly (1)
26 BoS registering an hourly commercial service to Creech St Michael in place of WB's tendered 27 (1)
21 gets half hourly shorts to make it every 15 mins from Taunton to Bridgwater (4)
54 gets hourly shorts to make it half hourly from Taunton to Somerton (2)

Timing changes to 28 to make it more competitive. Also, X28 Taunton station to Minehead Butlins on Mon/Fri to make it easier on 28

Think that's it??

That's more like it! Stickers on windows are one of my biggest bugbears. Thankfully First seem to have moved on from the mid to late 2000s craze of covering windows with external adverts. The worst was the B7 in Bath which had an all over sticker on one side advertising a car dealer! So annoying your customers and tempting them to buy cars - genius!
