Depends who's getting what with the Streetlites. If BH is only getting seven (for the 5?) then where are the others going?

47544–47558 are for Bath, with 47559–47571 for Hengrove.

When are the new Streetlights heading into bath & Bristol?

As soon as I see anything at Heysham, I will let you know.

That was the situation as described by BBP but locally, it's been reported that Bath may only receive 7 not 15, with the others possibly going to a Bristol depot.

There's always a few late changes. Last year, Weymouth wasn't due any Streetlites but then got some. I also believe Potteries are now due some despite not originally reported to get any.

Quite a lot for Bath then. Upgrade for the 14? Failing that I'd like to see the 05 reg Darts back on the 14 as they have two buggy / wheelchair areas (only one suitable for wheelchairs) so are better suited than the 09 reg Enviros.

Ah right let's hope Bath gets the full 15.

I realised on the First mobile app that a single from Newport to Bristol on the X7 is only £5.50, which is the same as a single on the X1 from Weston to Bristol. This surprised me as I thought it would be a lot more. Not only that, but I get 30% off as a student, so I'd only have to pay £3.85!

Does this mean the X7 is part of the First Avon Rider thingy, which I believe is like £6 for a student? I don't know how much it is! :(

I'm tempted to do this on Monday and have a massive spot. Still gonna look for deckers on the 70 (old news I know but I WILL do it!), as well as a journey on the X1 with those beautiful Enviro 400s. I also would like to cover south Bristol on the 75/76 and some Bath services.

The AvonRider is £6.20 for students but it's only valid within CUBA; can't help you further. You'll be wasting your time decker hunting in Ashley Down so why bother? Go somewhere nice like Bath!

The first B6 in green is now done, the other B6 already at Taunton is in the new first livery.

That was quick! Didn't realise any had left Bath yet. Looks good though. I think a lot of stock in this region that are now just over ten years old have missed a mid-life refurb so hopefully some will happen now. The MV02s currently leaving BoS should be done, and glad to see the B6s finding a suitable home in TN!

That's one of the Plymouth ones (40585) rather than a Bath one. They all originated in York though

I might try Bath actually. I was on the train last week going to Westbury and it looked lovely, so I'll give it a go!

And with regards to the 70, I was gonna go on the route and see!

Also, what is CUBA?

So you've been checking these many weeks and still no joy....as Einstein said, the first definition of madness is to the same thing and expect a different result ;)

You could get a train across to somewhere like Bath and experience the local services or..... get off either there or Chippenham. Then you can experience a wealth of quality kit with a Wiltshire Day Rover valid on most services of most operators for only £8.50.

Did one today starting at Trowbridge and then went via Devizes, Chippenham, Swindon (then to Shrivenham and back), Amesbury, Salisbury, Wilton, Warminster and Frome (across the border) and back into Trowbridge. Had five Enviro 400s (4 Stagecoach Scania and 1 GoAhead Trident) plus a First B7RLE Eclipse (66731) as well as trips on other firms such as Faresaver, APL Travel and Frome Minibuses.

CUBA is the term for North Somerset, BaNES, South Glos and City of Bristol - Counties that Used to Be Avon.

Bath is a World Heritage City and as well as the centre being stunning, you can get great views of it from various points above the city. It's also surrounded by lovely countryside

I suspect that batch left 2008-ish? I do have a snap of one in Melksham from around that date

Originally it was supposed to be 15 new buses headed for Bath, but like you say, most likely only seven now, and perhaps the 5 is a good bet.

As for the others, there was speculation that they would go to Hengrove to replace the recently arrived old rubbish, such as those marshal darts. But who knows. Would certainly be happy to see them go to MH for X2/3 sending the darts elsewhere. Even to Wells for 375/X75 like we discussed earlier. But that's getting slightly ahead of ourselves, not to mention into very unlikely territory!

I overheard somebody in Bristol Bus Station saying that by the end of July 2014 that streetlites will be on the X2 / X3. On another note I saw 47450 on the X9 to Nailsea.

I've seen various HE Streetlites on the X2/3 over the past week, especially during the early evening. The only reason I can see they be used is route clearance testing?

Would be great to see MH get something new, can't think that's ever happened! The X2 and X3 are definitely worthy services.

Really looks like the X2 and X3 would work. I have come up with a better idea for Thornbury.

Scrap the following 309/310/311/224/207/312 and replace with this.

77. Bus Station - Cribbs Causeway - Thornbury (Hourly all day including mornings and evenings, replacing the 309, because it would have been reduced to hourly some traffic could shift onto the 622 between Cribbs and Thornbury, making that more viable)

78. Bus Station - Parkway - Thornbury ( Hourly, taking over one of the current 309 paths, running up Gloucester Road to airbus then the ring road to Parkway and then Stoke Lane to Aztec and onwards to Thornbury. (Replacing the 312, the Parkway to Downend section can be scrapped as ut is already well served. Also a new Bus Station to Parkway link.

X11. Bus Station - Thornbury - Dursley (every 2 hours interworking with the X12. Following the direct 310 route to Thornbury then taking over the 311 to Dursley)

X12. Bus Station - Thornbury - Dursley ( Every 2 hours) interworking with the X11. 310 route to Thornbury then the 207 to Dursley)

This should cut the need for the 224. And have 3bph Bus Station - Thornbury and 1bph to Dursley! I Think thats a perfectly sensible and not over the top idea/plan.

I don't know the area quite well.

Also I don't like the Scania Enviro 400s, only ADL ones. Although I can't be picky as Bristol and the surrounding area seems to avoid Enviro 400s like the plague!

Speaking of Enviro 400s, there appear to be a batch at First Gushetfaulds's depot (which I'm guessing is in Scotland somewhere). One Enviro has the fleet number of 33859. Wonder where these are going?! Probably to Manchester I'd guess.

Suggest you read my post earlier on this thread about the 224. About 7 people use it AT PEAK and most were to Berkeley; it's tendered (as is 311) and was nearly withdrawn with the last GCC cuts so that tells you about demand! Also, you'll increase the journey time by running via Thornbury so that won't go down well.

Also, you'll need to replace the 312 as it serves Frenchay Village.

A higher frequency from Thornbury to Bristol makes sense and you may see it with a 20 min service?

I'll be positive and start panning for gold in the Avon ;) Just stop picking at the scab!

That e400 is in Glasgow and is destined for Sheffield but has gone up there for Games Transport, I reckon. The lack of e400s locally is just a reflection that there was a lot of deckers delivered between 2007 and 2009 for GBBN. Reckon next year may see new deckers but as I've said before a) the priority is non DDA compliant single deck replacement b) those fleets with step floor deckers such as West Yorks c) fleets that need decker replacement but who have older fleet profile such as South Yorks

Perhaps you need to move to Tavistock where First and PCB are fighting with e400 Tridents
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Other news is that First Glasgow 32936 was spotted at Firsts Worcester depot. Allegedly an route to Taunton. Another Trident but with ALX400 rather than Plaxton bodywork

Scrap the following 309/310/311/224/207/312 and replace with this.

77 Bus Station - Cribbs Causeway - Thornbury
Hourly all day including mornings and evenings, replacing one of the 309 trips an hour.

78 Bus Station - Bristol Parkway - Thornbury
Hourly, taking over one of the current 309 trips, running up Gloucester Road to the Airbus roundabout, then the ring road to Parkway and then Stoke Lane to Patchway and onwards to Thornbury.

622 Cribbs Causeway - Thornbury - Chipping Sodbury
Hourly, interworking with the 77, hopefully making it a more viable route.

X11 Bus Station - Thornbury - Dursley
2 Hourly interworking with the X12. Following the direct 310 route to Thornbury (Avoiding the Thornbury loop!) Then taking over the 311 to Dursley.

X12 Bus Station - Thornbury - Dursley
2 Hourly interworking with the X11. Following the direct 310 route to Thornbury (Avoiding the Thornbury loop!) Then taking over the 207 to Dursley.

The X11 and X12 north of Thornbury would still have to be subsidised but hopefully having a through route would increase numbers slightly.

The 224 between the Centre and Filton really is not needed and journey time on the X12 between Dursley and Filton would be no longer if not faster. Yes the very fast route between Dursley and Bristol might be lost but as said it has almost been withdrawn many times and I'm sure people would rather have a longer regular service than no service what so ever, and routing via Thornbury should increase passenger numbers.

The 18 could be rerouted to serve Frenchay Village to make up for the 312 being withdrawn.

This would result in the following. A 20 min Bristol - Thornbury service, which would include a faster service all day.

A quicker, direct and frequent service from Bristol - Dursley.

Cribbs Causeway - Thornbury would still have 2 buses per hour and will hopefully increase the viability of the 622.

Bristol Parkway would have a direct link with the bus station and it should be quicker than the 73 is, as well as maintaining a link to Thornbury.

Frenchay Village would gain an additional bus an hour by the rerouteing of the 18.

So very few people would loose out from this and if anything there are a lot more positives. I don't think the frequencies I have suggested are over the top and from my trips I think the route could sustain at 20 min frequency in the daytimes and the timetables would fit in quite well.

Good ideas.

Not that it effects me, but a direct link between Thornbury, Alveston and Bristol Parkway would be good.

If the 309 & 310 are renumbered in the 70 series, this would result in slowing down these services by about 10 to 15 minutes between Bristol and Thornbury as more people would use them.

Therefore faster limited stop services to Thornbury and Dursley would be appreciated.

BUT if the 309 & 310 are renumbered in the 70 series, PLEASE renumber them 78 & 79 and not 77 & 78 so that it could give availability of maybe the old 77 to Henbury possibly being re-instated one day in the future. (Actually I've just thought of an idea, have a 77 Bristol Bus Station-Thornbury via the old faster route to Henbury, and then onto Cribbs Causeway and Thornbury!)

Sorry but having done Dursley a number of times on First Day and Stagecoach tickets, there just isn't the traffic. The train is hourly or better and takes 40 mins. Lose the 224 and those passengers from Berkeley and Dursley will have journeys of over an hour to the city, probably 90 mins + from Dursley. The raison etre for the 224 from Dursley is the door to door advantage over the train. Send it via Thornbury and you lose that and people around Dursley, Cam and Stinchcombe just won't travel for 90 mins when a train and walk takes only an hour.

I agree that Thornbury should get faster journeys and I think that may happen with a simple 20 min service that does the loop in Thornbury to ensure it gets the max passengers then runs via Cribbs then non stop to town.

I'm not convinced that a direct bus station to Parkway service is needed. Passengers can use the relatively direct 73 that goes frequently from stops about 100m from the bus station. Also, you'll end up with conventional big buses on the Thornbury to Parkway route instead of minis so higher costs.

If First are going to increase their PVR, I think they'll employ those resources where they'll get most benefit and that's Thornbury to Bristol.

My other alternative idea to bringing back the service 77. Have the 76 route kept as it is but service reduced from every 10 minutes to every 15 minutes. New service 77 operating from Henbury(Tormarton Crescent lay-by)-Hartcliffe. Via basically the old 77 route via Pen Park Road, Gloucester Road to the Centre. Onto Bedminster, West Street, Hartcliffe Way, (possibly running via Whitchurch Lane and The Boulevard for Hengrove Leisure Centre, South Bristol Community Hospital and South Bristol College), then Hawkfield Road, and terminating at Bishport Avenue lay-by. Normal service frequency every 15 minutes Monday-Saturday. This would then give passengers in Henbury, Brentry, and parts of Southmead a service frequency of every 7/8 minutes on the 76 & 77 through to Gloucester Road, Broadmead, and the Centre, as well as a faster more direct service back again with the 77 instead of that fiddling about going all through Southmead!

All very viable. But a fantasy though as it would be highly unlikely to happen!

But North of Thornbury the 311 and 207 still run. It's not an additional service. Also the 312 runs via Parkway so not much of what im suggesting is new it's just combining a few services together

Ah, thanks! didn't realise that. Any idea when the current batch of 02 reg B7s presently arriving in Bath left Bath the first time? It can't have been that long ago.
Dont forget they were on Long Ashton P&R before going to Bath.
Incidentally 66356 was on 1115 377 from Yeovil today.

Ex Plymouth B6ble 40585 in Marmite was on 28 in Taunton today.
Ex Bath(and Bridgwater before that) 40590 in Barbie also in service on 25 and 28.

Read what I said. The 312 is a minibus service that you're wanting to extend to the bus station - why when the 73 does that job more frequently? That's what is increasing the PVR when really anything extra will be put on the core service Thornbury - Cribbs - Bristol

Also, you're advocating getting rid of the 224 by knitting services together that will considerably increase journey times for those passengers from Dursley and Berkeley. As you said "I'm sure people would rather have a longer regular service than no service what so ever, and routing via Thornbury should increase passenger numbers." I'm saying that you'll probably knacker that commuter trade and what benefit is there for a regular service that takes 50% longer?

Correction - they were on Portway; you can see the green paint showing through in some places. L Ashton P&R were the P-UFB Olympians.

60916 was hard at work on 28 today as I passed it en route to Minehead. 40590 is the first to leave Bath?

Part 2 and the final part of my little tribute to the service 77....

After about a year or so of the 76 & 77 being served by single decker Leyland Lynx's only, around April/May 2000 the service was upgraded to double deckers again! And we even had some of the original Leyland Olympians back again!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/tarquinius_superbus/12776961784
We even got one or two different Leyland Olympians from Yorkshire put on the 77! Here's a nice photo of one on the Centre working a service 77 to Hartcliffe. I remember riding on these. Great buses!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/23095055@N05/4139403708
Here's another one pictured resting at Muller Road Depot back in 2000.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/iantherev/2750147286
During this 2000/2001 period, some of the Leyland Olympian Paletine I's were back on these services again too. Here's one pictured on a 76 which has just finished it's working to Southmead Arnside Road lay-by.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/43911105@N00/7094440169
By very late 2001 or early 2002 however all these older Leyland Olympian's were taken off the 76 & 77, and replaced with the new ALX 400 Volvo B7's. Here's one pictured at Lewins Mead on a 77 to Henbury back in 2006.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/33672038@N05/5018915296
In 2008 the new Gemini buses arrived in Bristol. Here's one pictured from that year on the Centre with a 77 to Hartcliffe.

However by early 2009 the writing was on the wall for the service 77. After a public consultation with passengers in Henbury, Brentry, and Southmead who use these services, it was decided that the 77 would be axed and the 76 extended beyond Southmead Arnside Road to Henbury. This meant an increased frequency for all from every 20 minutes to every 10 minutes. Though for passengers in Henbury, Brentry, and upper Southmead this also actually involved an increased journey time of about 10 minutes or so as the 76 runs via Greystoke Avenue, Doncaster Road, and Southmead Road, rather than the direct route straight along Pen Park Road. I myself would have much rather the two services were kept as they were.

So on a late Saturday night in March 2009, service 77 ran for the very last time. Probably unlikely to ever return now. Much much missed in my opinion!

The e400 certainly looks better than the Gemini 3 but in terms of performance, I think the Volvo B5LH beats the 400H. For normal chassis, the e400 Trident seems to be the most popular with a bit more go than the Scania version.

There are a number of Volvo B5LH/Gemini 3's with Stagecoach London at their Plumstead depot for the 53. They are incredibly ugly. Not a fan at all if I'm honest!

And in terms of Enviro 400s, I prefer the ADL version as I said earlier, as opposed to the Scania version. I believe Stagecoach Herefordshire have Scania models in use on the 32 in Ross-in-Wye.

I'm a big fan of the current Geminis that Bristol have (i.e. 37315-37359, 37587-37632, 37757-37772).

Part 2 and the final part of my little tribute to the service 77....

After about a year or so of the 76 & 77 being served by single decker Leyland Lynx's only, around April/May 2000 the service was upgraded to double deckers again! And we even had some of the original Leyland Olympians back again!

We even got one or two different Leyland Olympians from Yorkshire put on the 77! Here's a nice photo of one on the Centre working a service 77 to Hartcliffe. I remember riding on these. Great buses!

Here's another one pictured resting at Muller Road Depot back in 2000.

During this 2000/2001 period, some of the Leyland Olympian Paletine I's were back on these services again too. Here's one pictured on a 76 which has just finished it's working to Southmead Arnside Road lay-by.

By very late 2001 or early 2002 however all these older Leyland Olympian's were taken off the 76 & 77, and replaced with the new ALX 400 Volvo B7's. Here's one pictured at Lewins Mead on a 77 to Henbury back in 2006.

At the moment, I can't see the 77 ever returning, although I wasn't in Bristol at the time it ran (my earliest memories of Bristol was the 75 displaying Patchway Asda as opposed to Cribbs Causeway and the 41 going to Cherry Gardens). Gloucester Road is already very busy, with the very highly frequent 73, 75 and 76, as well as additions such as the 309/310 and Wessex's 11, 12, 15 and 19.

Having said that, I think something does need to be done about the 76, as it currently takes a bit of a detour, going from Cribbs Causeway to Henbury AND Southmead before going down Gloucester Road. If the 76 was altered to only serve Southmead then I think that would make a lot of sense, as Henbury is already served by the 1 and the 40. Southmead at present only has the 2 and the not-so-frequent 82.

What was the full route of the 77? Was it just a shortened version of the current 76? Or did it go Henbury straight to Gloucester Road, the Centre and Hartcliffe?

The Gemini 3 does look ugly! I don't like the upstairs windows. I can see what First don't like them. Much prefer the Gemini 2 or 1.
