Upon Avon? Or Stratford London? Are the seats sideways?
No 172s have sideways seats.

I don't understand the 'not appropriate' bit in the OP. They have 2+2 seating, 100 mph, toilets - surely they are as appropriate if not better than a 165?

All Chiltern services are DOO.

Are they,
My ticket has been checked on the 67s when I went to Birmingham and London from Leamington Spa.
Also I have been checked from Bicester North to Leamington Spa on a CR 168.

DOO means the driver releases and closes the doors not the conductor/train manager. That doesn't mean the driver is the only rail staff on board.

If Chiltern passengers aren't happy travelling on 172s then we'll have them up North, especially as you'll be taking our 170/3s.

Only South of Banbury. North of Banbury all services have guards. All the LHCS services have guards throughout too. Also any services between South Ruislip and Paddington have guards.

They're certainly better than 165s. Nowhere near as comfortable as 168s or 170s though.

Oh ok,
I thought DOO meant Driver Only Operated, meaning that it would only be driver and passengers. Apparently now we aren't planning to take the 170/3s and make the Oxford trains be 165s.

Well if it's a DOO service it doesn't have to be cancelled if there is no-one to check tickets or a ticket inspector may only be present for part of the service. The Northern Rail consultation talks about introduction of DOO on certain electric routes so that the conductor can concentrate on revenue duties meaning there's less ticket-less travel. Consequently there's a thread on here about introduction of DOO on Northern with 470 posts, compared to 130 posts in the thread on the rest of the Northern and TPE consultation!

Apparently now we aren't planning to take the 170/3s and make the Oxford trains be 165s.

Is that official? The last time it looked like a deal had been agreed to keep the 170/3s it turned out to be a poorly written minute from a TfGM meeting.

I didn't know 172/1s came up to Snow Hill :o

This thread seems the best place to ask, where do the 172/1s generally work? Stoppers Marylebone to Ruislip (as I had one on once) is about the only place I can think of. Only need to get 172101 and 172104 to clear the entire 172 class at long last, so would be handy to know what services to go for next time I'm down there.

Thanks fishquinn, I can't get to Snow Hill that early without staying in the Birmingham area, but very useful still.

I didn't consider looking on the diagrams thread, I must remember to have a look at that before my next trip to London but it looks like I'll have little difficulty finding my last 2 172s :)

So thanks Mojo and fishquinn :)
