Anyone know why East Coast still haven't released their tickets for the TdF weekend?

Occasionally races get held up by trains. Just this last Sunday in the prestigious Paris-Roubaix one day classic a rider who was dropped by the leading group and was trying to catch up again got held up while a level crossing was down. Two TGVs went past and by the time the barriers where going up the Peloton had caught up with him. Previously riders used to jump the barriers if they could but this has been stopped with a number of riders being disqualified for this.
I think the risk of level crossings being shut is considered to be just one of those things you have to deal with like a puncture.

A few years ago when the Tour of Britain started from Scunthorpe the route travelled over the River Trent, north through Goole and Howden. A small leading group had a commanding lead over the main field, approaching 10 minutes I think. However their lead was shrunk because they got stuck at the Howden Station barriers whilst two trains (opposite directions) passed. When they set off I think their lead was down to less than 5 minutes. The problems of professional cycle racing in flat areas!

EC tickets are normally release on a Thursday. Last week, they released till July 4th, and this week (as usual) to July 11th. Strangely, the tickets available to buy from Starbeck don't match with the services shown as operating on RTT... :|

Have my tickets now. EC have an extra early morning service to Leeds and maybe some others.

Trains are operating from York though, terminating at Knaresborough. That must be fairly unusual - when was the last time trains terminated at Knaresborough from the east, just out of curiosity?

Should be a pair of DRS class 47s. I think it should be a pair of DRS 57s though so to keep away the 'cranks'.

Calder valley line especially Mytholmroyd will be popular on the Sunday

The tour climbs Cragg Vale the longest continuous climb in the UK starting right outside the station!

A shuttle or two from there to Huddersfield might just let you see the race twice, not that I can see what the attraction is of seeing a group of pumped up bike riders whooshing past. At least with F1 they rush by you 50 times in the race.

It must be the bright colours that attracts them

Personally I think that's the problem with F1. Oh look - here's the car - oh it's gone and I'm now deaf. Oh here they are again. Oh - and again. And again. Oh - once more. Back again. And again. Oh here again. Once more. And again. And.........

When it comes to such things sometimes there is much to be said in favour of 'blink and you miss it!' :p

An update:

TfGM said:
TfGM continues to work with Northern Rail and other stakeholders in
preparation for The Tour de France which will pass into Greater
Manchester on Sunday 6 July, 2014. Northern Rail will operate a full
programme of train strengthening and additional shuttle services on key
lines, including the Calder Valley line. All stations along the route will be
fully manned and all staff leave has been cancelled during the event.
Additionally, TransPennine Express will be operating a full programme of
strengthening on both the Saturday and Sunday.

Northern Rail’s train plan on Sunday 6 July will include four car trains on
all Leeds - Manchester Victoria services, three car trains on York –
Blackpool services and on extended Leeds – Halifax – Rochdale
services. Four car trains (two x 150 units) will operate from Manchester
Victoria – Rochdale which will be extended to Hebden Bridge.

FTPE is also mobilising to supporting the Tour de France event on 5th
and 6th July. Specifically, pre 11:00 Leeds arrival services on the
Saturday will be double units (6 cars). Likewise, services out of Leeds at
key times after the race will also be strengthened. The Sunday (6th July)
also impacts on FTPE’s network; with early arrivals into York for the race
start, the mid race stage passing Huddersfield and the race end at
Sheffield. Therefore relevant services into these destinations at key times
will also be strengthened (6 cars). The Sunday strengthening plan also
caters for providing strengthened services that mirror the schedule of the
York to Huddersfield schedule of the race.

To further support the demand for capacity FTPE is also planning to
utilise a DRS loco hauled service on both days (providing two round trips
between Liverpool and Scarborough aligned to calling at key points on
the race route). This is still being negotiated with DRS. Extra staff and
queue management operations will also be deployed at critical places on
the network to manage increased footfall.

Apologies for the thread bump, but are there currently times available for the loco-hauled set? I couldn't care less about lycra-clad cyclists but a return of 47s to the Standedge route is another thing altogether!

Here are the services that are set to be loco hauled:

They seem miss out Liverpool South Parkway, Birchwood and Stalybridge.

Cheers for that. Think I might have to limit myself to just a run from Hudds to Manchester though! Leeds would be cheaper but also more crowded, I imagine.

Also just seen on the Metro website, Northern will be running a 45min. interval service on the Penistone line during the tour. The most intensive service possible with the single line and the two loops at Stocksmoor-Clayton West Junction and Penistone. Still only 3-cars max due to platform lengths though.

EDIT: Thought the 'double-post prevention system' would kick in!

After a long enough delay it normally allows the post to be a new one rather than merge them.

Are these loco hauled trains definite? The Saturday or Sunday could work out to be the last day of my 7 day rover. Is it just the 2 return trains noted in this thread that will be loco hauled?

Do I drop the 57 run in Cronwall / Devon on the Saturday for these trains? hmmmmmmmm?

I would, as you could do the saturday and sunday and there are the runs to Blackburn and Harrogate as well. They are definite but not the traction provider as now either DRS or West Coast will run them. Hope you have fun on your trip.:D

I was just thinking actually do DRS have enough stock to run two trains? I know they have at least 1 set (as I have been on it) but I'm not sure about another

DRS and Riviera Trains have a good working relationship, so if extra stock was needed, I wouldn't see it being a problem.

Yep and then on Sunday you have a Manchester Piccadilly-Doncaster and a Doncaster to Liverpool Lime Street.
The Blackburn and Harrogate are scheduled as diesel locomotives.

Basically there are 2 rakes as far as I'm aware. Rake 1 is TPE as outlined above, and rake is Northern, which does Leeds-Harrogate shuttles on Saturday from 10.xx to 23.xx then does similar with Bradford-Blackburn on Sunday.

Some extra journeys have appeared in the system, and judging by posts elsewhere on wnxx and 4ft, it appears that a 67 with a shortened Pretendolino may also be operating between Leeds and Harrogate.

A DVT would make sens for the large volume of bikes expected.
