It looks horrible and given the intensive use the 319s see will look like utter ****e within a few hours.

Won't be as bad as the AGA 379s. They're not white anymore, but look more like beige/gold in places. Boy do they look like old trains now (and when you go inside and see all those broken buttons, it doesn't make them look any newer there either!).

Maybe they're simply not washed often enough, as LO 378s generally look as good as new.

I don't see the new liveried 365s that often (guess there are still not many done) but they seem quite clean - probably because they're off white.

319's are enjoying hand bashing at Cricklewood (no washer for now) - best way to really lift the dirt off.

The 319s being cascaded are 319/3s which are better so you can stop moaning

Exactly - they are (as mentioned before - somewhat endlessly) - units in good nick - came home tonight on 319368 - perfectly decent for a 30 min trip ..

And even when the time comes for the bulk do the 319s to go new contracts will be in place allowing refurbishments to take place, an also 319s are exclusivky destined for the north it's widely predicted that Thames valley branches and Bristol locals will get them.

Saw it at St Albans tonight on the last two runs but a bit gloomy for a decent picture alas! Didn't realise it was its first day in service - I might have tried harder had I known.

A lot of people were noticing the different colours (I think everyone did apart from the woman trying to sell tissues!). Couple of school kids commented on it being repainted and one even seemed savvy to the fact that internally it was just the same as the other unit it was coupled to.

That is very true, reading Rail Professional when it is occasionally around the depot at work I sometimes come across the advertisement for a train cleaner that seems to do a cracking job getting rid of that golden-brown paint type dirt! Ad shows Southeastern Electrostars which are obviously a similar colour. Hopefully AGA will take note!

On the subject of the 379 buttons, has this been discussed on the forum? I'm soon to be starting with Greater Anglia and this is something that has always caught my attention!

I've mentioned it on here a few times (there is a thread) and brought it up with their social media team. Nothing has been done and more buttons break every time I look, including what I'd consider important ones like door open/close buttons. There's no text for the accessible toilet door ones, and it's rather fiddly when using them in the toilets.

Frankly it's a joke as they're hard to press even if you're not visually impaired, and also disappointing that it isn't considered important by AGA (especially the engineering team). If it was, they'd be replaced and at worst you'd see just a couple here and there.

Bombardier should be funding their replacement and sourcing a different supplier for the buttons.

Come to think of it, although I don't get to see the 379s that often, every time I've seen them they do look very dirty and brown. What sort of washer treatment do they get? The white units I see are actually clean and just yesterday I mistook 3 seperate units in Gillingham EMUD for being fresh out of paint works, when they'd only had a wash. I guess it depends how often they go through the washer. I just hope the TL units like 319010 receive adequate washing.

there's a wash road at Cambridge, though it's awkwardly situated and there's a large number of units stable at Cambridge each night. What other washers do they have access to?

According to the DfT, they're fine for the sub-class passengers in the North west though. :(

was good enough for the first class season ticket holders from Brighton for two decades, good enough for the northwest I think! <D

But you see the south gets disproportionate investment. Like in the 80s with Sprinterisation, while the north travelled in slam doors for another decade... No wait ;)...

Oddly enough, I usually find AGA stock to be pretty clean inside - comparable to the better train cleaning operations around the Southern network, which are not too bad at all. It's just the outsides of the stock which seem to let them down. It would be a little more excusable if the trains had one of the older liveries and as such were due for a refresh shortly, but of course that's not going to be the case with 379s.

I too suspect that there may be some awkwardness in accessing areas where the appropriate washers & chemicals can be used. Somehow, I am unsure if a TOC would want to employ extra staff for hand-washing the units if there are (on paper) vaguely-sufficient automatic facilities, rather than if they were out of use for some reason. I don't really see why they wouldn't want to procure relatively good products for cleaning - surely the somewhat better reputation would outweigh the small extra cost?

Any photos of the mods done inside 319010?

Unless I've missed something hidden (or blindingly obvious), there is no difference internally to any other 319/0. I couldn't see a single detail changed - the moquettes, the paint on walls or even the stickers were not new. I was about to take photos, but something came up - bloody tissue sellers!

They go through the washer at Ilford normally when they go there for maintenance, but apparently, its designed to remove surface dust and leave a "film" on the paintwork to help reduce the ability for grime to stick, but I guess only properly works if they go through it at least once a day every day, but with 379's working so hard its hard for that to happen. I've also heard reliably that a new batch of buttons has arrived and are going to be fitted shortly.

It would be a little more excusable if the trains had one of the older liveries and as such were due for a refresh shortly, but of course that's not going to be the case with 379s.

On Saturday, going to Stratford from Cheshunt (via Liverpool Street) the 379 was pretty dirty inside - but by that I mean rubbish on the floors and in the corners. Of course that's down to the passengers, but upon arrival at LST it was clear the train was going to be turned around quite quickly - and there was no cleaning team on the platform. Nor any cleaning teams that I could see on the other platforms on that side of the station.

The (non-accessible) toilet on our train had no water or toilet paper, so I wonder how often they get attention? We were on the train at around 11am! Surely the toilet wasn't that heavily used?

What I did see was a lot of AGA staff in suits, but they didn't appear to be revenue. In groups of 2-3 each, chatting and laughing to each other, but not doing any revenue duty or even taking any notice of passengers at all (the gates were staffed by people in tabards). Does anyone know what they do?

When walking over to get a train to Stratford, there were still lots of AGA staff in suits, but I did then spot someone with a clear bag doing some cleaning! And the 315 that we boarded was spotless.

Obviously these were once different routes and franchises, albeit many years ago, but are they still managed differently?

I've also heard reliably that a new batch of buttons has arrived and are going to be fitted shortly.

I hope they're a design that means they won't break again. No point just playing a game of replacing them as soon as they fall off.

I'd love to know who is paying for the new buttons and their replacement, and hope it's not being paid for by passengers. If it was a consumer product, it would be unfit for purpose and the trains should be sent back to Bombardier for a full refund. :D

I agree. I know it maybe a little unusual to praise AGA, but I find their train interiors are usually very clean and much more so than SWT, for example.

with regards washing- if washer capacity wasn't an issue (say a depot had one set up so that every train arriving could use the washer without causing delays) would running through a washer every day cause problems- e.g. damage to under frame equipment, corrosion, wearing of paint? Or should the train and paintwork be robust enough to put up with that?

I think its all fine tbh, the main thing that prevents a train being washed on arrival is whether the windows have been shut at the terminus before they head to the depot, if they are open obviously it soaks through the interior which is not good. Also, on certain stock, the rubber seals round the door bottoms are not very good and so let in a lot of water onto the train floor, which prevents this stock from being washed on the way in to service.

Does anyone know if there are any plans to paint a few 313s white in the near future? These units are looking well past their best externally with graffiti damage taking its toll and discoloured front ends. The interiors are a real contrast, however: absolutely spotless in most cases and they even have a clean smell to them.

This isn't a problem on the 379s! Or any other fully aircon stock without open-able windows

no idea if the 379s have dodgy seals.
