As is always the case with road and rail, there's dual standards in safety going on here.
A driver runs the flashing lights and gets hit by a train and there's calls for apologies from NR and replacing the crossing with a bridge.
A driver runs a red light at a crossroads and causes an accident. That's 'just life', there's an official shrug of the shoulders, and we carry on as before.
It was ever thus.
