This morning I saw a 150 passing through Knutsford at around the time I expected to see the 08:04 Chester-Manchester passing through. However, it was actually the 06:54 Chester-Manchester running 67 minutes late.
This has made me think what if it was the 08:04 Chester-Manchester that was running around an hour late? As there aren't information displays or PA systems at most stations on the line most people wouldn't know whether the previous train had been cancelled or whether the previous train was very late so a lot would board that service with off-peak tickets unless the conductor (or station staff where available) told them otherwise. Could an operator penalise passengers for being on a peak service with off-peak services in such circumstances?
