Here’s a round-up from March’s haulage log.
While there has not been too many winners this month apart from S-7s on the Circle line, I seemed to have had a lot of luck falling into 377s still required for 10 miles bagging about 3/4 of those still on the list. Thankfully there are only 13 left to go (until the 3777s arrive) and the 377/6s join the 377/2s as sub-classes cleared for 10 miles. 465s and 466s seem more difficult but then I tend not to look at South Eastern in the peak. 319363 joins that elite band of units having crawled over the 2,000 miles mark. How many more will I get over 2,000 before the 319s venture away from Thameslink? Finally, a spare few hours on the 31st saw me stray onto the Great Northern and I was suitably rewarded with some 313s and rounded off with a brand new 365 (memo to self, must go north of the Circle line more often, there’s still a lot I need …)

Impressive work, I'm going to add my recent journeys in tonight (a lot to work on!) - I can only imagine how long it will take to get a unit past the 2000 mile barrier, as my daily commute typically consists of a maximum journey length of barely over 10 miles on an individual unit - and always with a unit type that has a large fleet...

I've not any units even at 1,000 yet although 20 miles off clearing 175116 for it. But then I have to commute by bus! Got one of those on or very near 7,000 now in just over 2 years! Most of the other regular buses I use are high mileage too, only 4 left to clear for the magical thou!

Hoping April is a good month for me, although I doubt it as I have a lot of money to pay back :(

A trip to the Ribble Steam Railway's Diesel Gala produced the following:
D2595 (Class 05)
Sentinels 10165 and 10282 (Energy and Enterprise)
Thomas Hill 160V (Stanlow #4)
79960 (Wagon und Maschinebau railcar)
plus 390021 on the way and Tram3010 coming home.

A fine day out at a very friendly line. I'll be returning at some point for a spin on their steamers!

Congratulations! How long did it take to achieve the rather large task? I've got 357 DMUs to get yet, slowly getting there and if I can get that down to less than 300 remaining before the year ends I'll be very happy. The monumentally huge task of getting 1,366 EMUs is going to take a long time!

Looks like a lot of people have been busy this month, fair play!

Just done a quick count and 470 DMUs still required. (Not even going to attempt counting the EMUs).

As for time taken - 142001 was first sampled in October 1985!

Started recording what units I've travelled on in 1988, although it wasn't until about 2006 or 2007 that I set about 'red penning' units I hadn't previously travelled on. There are still some first generation DMUs in preservation (mainly ones that haven't worked for donkeys years) , and class 141 units in Iran that I haven't had (although I'm in no hurry to go to Iran just to 'red pen' some bouncy buses ! ).

That's a fair degree of desperation.

I've been stored serviceable for quite a few years now (setting up a business) but now I've got a bit of time I'm back out a bit and I've realised that I only need two 142's - missed 059 though. I'm not quite sure how that happened because I've never chased them particularly.

I did, however, have all the 141's. Being at Leeds University 1987-1990 made this rather easy for me!

To those of you that have made a significant dent in rolling stock fleets that are outside your local area - how many full days have you spent trying to track them down? Genuinely curious about how much people are putting to attain these impressive goals.

Despite working in London and living fairly near, because I very rarely travel 'for the sake of it' I rely on my commute / customer visits at work (which are fortunately fairly frequent) for my hauls. I think I've done fairly well under the circumstances, but even attaining all the London rolling stock fleets would be a monumental task, and it doesn't help that I only started red penning a year or so ago. For example, I only recall being on one or possibly two 317s, many years ago, so I've no idea which they were. I've never been on a 379, and have only ever been on one 458!
Generally I stand the most chance with the c2c fleet (already complete, in fact) as it's my typical daily commute, the Greater Anglia eastern EMU fleet (my alternate commute and local line) and the three main south London TOCs, as that's where our customer base really is. The enormity of those three fleets though, coupled with the fact I don't use them daily, means I might still be waiting a while :)

I live in Guildford and tracking down the London fleets is a long process. I've done countless Travelcards but I still have a long way to go to clear them all. I've lived in Guildford for 3 years now and I only need 3 units for my local TOC, SWT.

TEW is correct - it's a long process, even if, when you get down to your last few, you have a friend with access to a machine. Bearing in mind the 156s have been around since the late 1980s, there's still one that I've yet to have...

Having said that, sometimes you can walk into your last member of a particular type - a year or so I was up in the Glasgow area, caught a train to Springburn and found my last 320 sat there. I know a few people who have cleared their operational multiple units (although they no doubt need a few with the new stuff that's recently appeared).

This year has been quite successful for me unit-wise. I've scored:
5 x 165 (I find Chiltern's very difficult, 5 out of 8 in one day was very good)
1 x 321 (my last one)
3 x 350 (all new TPE ones)
4 x 375 (down to 2)
18 x 377 (including my last /2 and /5 examples, now only need new /6 and /7 ones)
2 x 390 (for 'extending')
1 x 450 (my last one)
1 x 455 (for new motor coach, converted from 210 car - prior to that the 455s were cleared)

I have no idea off the top of my head how many days (I could go and work it out) I have spent outside my local area trying to track down units to clear. I do it whenever I can and funds allow. I'm fortunate that I have a friend who works for a TOC and he invites me along whenever our time off coincides. I have been having a go since May 2010. I had stopped for about 15 years so everything was pretty much new when i returned to the game.

All I do know is that once I had finished off FGW land (well part from the Thames units) my days out are fewer as it costs more to get further afield. I had done countless Devon Day Rangers to knock off all the FGW HSTs, 143s, 150s, 153s and XC HSTs and 220/221s.

theblackwatch is right about walking into your last unit unknowingly sometimes.

I only recently crossed off all 220's, after netting the remaining two in quick succession within about a week. I had been chasing after them to no avail for a good few months prior. 220007 turned up unexpectedly when I waited at Wolves to do a diversion one evening late last month, and 220006 the week after on the very same journey in reverse.

At last count, I have 331 operational DMUs remaining, and I have only been recording since 2011.

The TOPS request thread can be useful when chasing after the last one or two units for a class. I do not particularly like it when people request the diagrams for loads of units, as it almost feels like cheating, but given the difficulty in tracking down the very last units, it makes the hobby a lot more accessible.

I netted 458030 that way.

My best "drop on" occasion was about 10 years ago on the Paris Metro; I had three lines each with a single unit left to bash - and dropped on them consecutively changing from one line to the other, clearing the three in the space of just ¾ hour...!!:D:D:D

I walked into my final 220 in Chesterfield a few years ago when i wasn't looking for it. I was on a Derbyshire Wayfarer ticket and pretty much needed everything that was coming. I was avoiding the XC units as I had slowly knocked them off in the South West but when i arrived into Chesterfield on another service and saw it was my last one it would have been rude not to get back to Sheffield.

To those of you that have made a significant dent in rolling stock fleets that are outside your local area - how many full days have you spent trying to track them down? Genuinely curious about how much people are putting to attain these impressive goals.

I tend to average about one trip a month outside my local commuting area chasing down red pens. So far this year, I have managed two long distance trips, both to South Wales where each time I have come away with several red pens or other notable entries in the haulage log. There's far more excursions in the pipeline the following outings already at various stages of planning for this year -
a day trip to West Yorkshire;
yet another South Wales foray where I also hope to indulge in a bit of potography;
a three day trip to Scotland where again I will doubtlesly be "distracted" by the camera;
a session dealing with Southern's 171s so that'll be Oxted line in the peak followed by a roam around Marsh-link;
a jaunt around Merseyside principally to target the 507s & 508s - this will likely be a two day trip;
at least one, if not more, visits to Manchester where the main target will be 142s; and
an excursion to Exeter to see if I can knock out my remaining Great Western 143s.

And more plans will doubtlessly crystalise as the year progresses - lready a second Scottish visit is being considered.

I have been at the haulage game for a long time - over 35 years - so I have amassed a lot in my time, locos, units, underground but still there's more to get, especially as I tend to have periods away, concentrating on other things such as photography. But even then, my requirements are still fairly extensive. The London Travelcard area still accounts for 79 outright required national rail units (Chiltern being the worst TOC) with only Paddiongton & Fenchurch Street completely clear, neither of which are part of the daily commute. Then add in another 50 TfL units - i.e. Tramlink, DLR and Underground - with the Central line by far the worst offender, there's still some pickings to be had within the Travelcard zones. Going outside the Travelcard zones, I am still after 267 assorted DMUs with Scotrail 156s and 158s being the worst offenders along with 123 EMUs with no less than 78 of those being Scottish!

I tend not to get out much on Saturdays (it's the only day that both myself & wife are off work) but I will often wander out on a Sunday afternoon once the chores are done. While time restricts me to staying within the Travelcard area, I tend to take a look at stuff that I normally do not encounter on the daily commute - so that means ignoring Southern, FCC and southeastern. Lately, I have been trying to deal with the remaining SWT 444s and 450s but once I have the upper hand there, my focus will move elsewhere. Areas that I have in my sights are London Overground and the Central Line.

I also have take into account my gold standard of a minimum of 10 miles for each passenger unit so once a unit has been red-penned, the next target is to get it up to gold standard. Several classes are already there, notably 319s, 455s & 456s and I am not far off with Southern 377s.

Anoher thing I log, but not to the extent of actively chasing down, is hits for the year - this applies only to ational rail . With a little over three months of 2014 gone, I am up to 580 already and targetting a bare minimum of 1,000 for the year (last year I reached 580 in early December!)

To sum up, there's plenty of miles in me yet but as the daily commute cannot carry on throwing up hits for ever even going for the ten mile gold standad, it will be Sunday rambles and long distance outings where I will be scoring either outright hits or the 10 mile "gold standard" entries in the haulage list.

As I'm on my phone, a thorough reply is not forthcoming yet. Particularly as I need to refer to my 2012/13/14 moves book at home for some of it (before 2012 the moves are scattered everywhere in diaries and notebooks)! Safe to say for now that samuelmorris' question has generated considerable interest for me...

Anyway, latest scores:

7th April 2014

158794

Yes, that was all I scored on Monday...

You do realise those are all the same sets? Example 21363+21364 are a 4 and 3 car set coupled together, but to the best of my knowledge they don't work separately. Unless I've got something wrong of course...

I've run out of time to reply to samuelmorris' question today, I'll try again soon to reply. Work takes up a lot of time, as does the commuting and suffering colleagues who get on my nerves, then it's time to spend with 3 different people at once when I get home. Having to resort to a post-work coffee at 8pm just to keep going at the moment and staying up til gone 0100 just to manage even a bit of it. So I hope it's understandable that my presence is limited at the moment on the forum. Hate it being like that though as I don't get kept up to date enough with everything!

Officially they're actually a single seven car unit not two half trains; they're numbered in the French fashion... Though I admit to not trusting TfL 100% over that; the way I show them is a compromise format with a slash line eg 21301/2.

Currently near the end of a pretty exhaustive (and exhausting!) visit to Croatia and Bosnia with 25 locos to add, 18 of them on the same seven day railtour. We were hoping to hit 20 locos on the tour as the nice people in ŽFBH were quite happy to change locos where possible but their colleagues on ŽRS seem to think we like 661 278 and it looks as if we will be stuck with it until we get back into Croatia tomorrow; it is rather good though :D

Having worked a lot of overtime recently, and more to come soon (got an 0530 journey start in a couple of weeks I'm not looking forward to), I can understand that very well. No rush, I'm in no hurry :)
