So why is the signalling data for Newton Abbot being bounced off Penzance?

Do you now see my confusion? :D

And yes i am used to your responses i probably shouldn't have bitten quite so aggressively. Feeling a little sensitive after an absolute drumming at 5-a-side.

No idea if it is or not. I'm just going by NR's PR on why the bridge was built.

Just looked at the webcam - there's some cabling along the bridge appears on about the 24th of Feb.

I've read elsewhere that some signals will be out of use and that there will be extended block sections between Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth starting at signals E72 and UM208 (if that means anything to anyone.) Also, temporarily the Up line will be made non bidirectional while repairs are made.

Spoke to a Bobby the weekend who is the relief signalman for the whole of Cornwall who is currently covering Truro Box. It's routes down via a direct fibre link to Penzance, where its converted to TDM back up the line. A lot of Cornwall is still AB, but there are still comms cables which can be used that stretch the entire line.

Yes I do, maybe they were going to run the cables across and changed their minds when the Penzance trick worked out okay!

Sorry about that (the 5 aside and my sarcastic post) I really should try and be a bit nicer to some people on here, some people (not you) deserve a sarcastic comment or two though! ;)

That probably crossed with my edit, but the webcams DO show cables across the bridge from the 24th...

Maybe, but to be honest who knows, speculation on this forum could lead us anywhere.

Yes they do and i give my fair share too to those that deserve it. I cannot possibly name names but i imagine you know. I wouldn't try be nice that would ruin your stand as forum comedian.

I've heard that as well. Would the working be similar to that currently applying between Bridgwater and Cogload?

Never said you didn't! :D But if anyone on the forum can be replied on for a sarcastic response it is most certainly you.
I do try! ;)
Do you realise how long it took me to build my reputation up (or was it down? ;)) and it does take a lot of effort to maintain it you know!

At a guess there are no cables past the ongoing landslip site I would expect the break to be there, all the work going on there does not mix well with signalling cables. Water, mud, stone, rocks and large diggers are not a good match.

Another comment copied from the webcam

"First train to run over today." Almost guaranteed to be stale info that someone's accidentally forgotten to delete from the database.

Similarly odd (but impossible) trains came up intermittently on RTT while there was a massive gap in the track through Botley...

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

Cable trough installation in progress at the moment along the main breach site.

Even watching now (15:30) the waves are crashing against the wall. It's always been like that though, but I do hope that NR did check to ensure the rest of the wall was safe and strong again. The wall is already starting to weaken after the storms so I would imagine another storm like it may do similar destruction at a different location.

I notice RTT is showing 5 trains from Westbury Down Yard to Exeter St Thomas (I presume going into the possession) arriving between 0030 and 0230 this Saturday morning. Does anyone know what they are for, possibly removing spoil from the controlled landslip?

Now it's clearly high tide (1746) and if one just takes a long hard look at the view, it clearly proves that if nature took its course the real high tide mark would be about 200 metres inland, at least. In other words, Dawlish town would not exist, after the cliffs gradually fall away (might take a few hundred years).

Aside from the rail issue, it seems to me to be a much more profound environmental issue.

It's very pretty though, undeniably.

I'm having difficulty working out what they've done with the footpath. Does it still do the 'dip' that makes the wall impassable at high tide - I can't quite tell what's under the scaffolding.

Aren't the containers that form the emergency breakwater sitting on the dipped section of footpath?

Yes they are and just to clear up a few questions from other posters.
The scaffold was provided for running out and temp supporting the new cables, also a additional scaffold was erected for access across the breach.

The suggestion about running trains on the 28th may have come from one of my earlier posts in reference to engineering trains, in fact these trains will run on the 29th, where emergency track renewals are taking place in the Spray Point area (where the cliff fall is) to remove/renew the track which has had a TSR on it since 2012 and also to renew the recent track damage from the controlled slip site.
In regard to signalling, I'm not a signal person but I can say that all axle counters are being renewed.
One other item that may interest is both lines across Marine Parade has been ballast bonded with an additional site from mid point Dawlish Station to Coastguards bridge

Between about 1130 and 1200 this morning the 'lobstervision' webcam view shows how the cabling has been slid across from the temporary location on the cable bridge towards the track, using those scaffolding poles as a support. (The 1135 picture best shows the technique.)

In hindsight that must be why those poles were added once the 'wall' was completed, because as soon as the cables had been moved the poles came down again...
