An extract for link challenged members:

MAJOR construction work on Kingskerswell bypass has closed two sections of rail line in South Devon.

The work is being carried out on the culvert near Sainsbury's at the Newton Abbot section of the South Devon Link Road.

The tracks are being lifted to install a replacement drainage culvert under the main Paddington to Plymouth and Paignton railway line at Aller junction which is required for the South Devon link road.

The work has been brought forward to coincide with the main line closure at Dawlish and is scheduled for nine days.

The main line is expected to reopen on April 4, so the bypass contractor Galliford Try wants the culvert work done while the repair work at Dawlish is still under way, to avoid another closure later in the year.

There's a comment on the Dawlish webcam saying that the line will re-open a week earlier than planned on 28th March. Anyone heard this?

Just seen that myself... Honest opinion is that it does not look that far fetched. Look at the work no and we are very very close to the stage of putting ballast into the breach... Trains running and work ending are two very different things too. Ballast train arrived today and they are tamping the rest of the line so again, the route being reopened is not beyond the realm of possibility. The only snag is this controlled landslide which i cant seem to work out if it has happened or not?

This should be a public post too, this shows the operation to remove landslip material from the hill. Sources say it is just a steady stream of slurry that is being cleared away so as to not damage the formation. Good move to do it now rather than wait for a collapse and close it again.

The Army has been called in to help reinstate the main rail line to the south west of England after it was destroyed by storms.

Up to 30,000 tonnes of unstable rock and soil has to be removed near Dawlish in a controlled landslip.

Network Rail hopes the Royal Engineers will be able to use specialist equipment to remove part of the rock face so the line can be reinstated.

It added it hoped the line would still be reopened on 4 April.

There's to be a feature on the controlled landslip on BBC Spotlight local news at 13:30 today on BBC1 south west, and I expect it'll be on the evening edition too. The trailer for this during national news showed a helicopter video view of the site.

I can say that the track installation will be completed by the 28th, however passenger trains will not run on that date but engineering trains might, if the current thinking of reballasting and relaying at the. Teignmouth slip site goes ahead.

As I would have thought that whatever the REs have available is also available commercially

Very good quality! But never mind the quality - feel the width... So is the bonding everywhere or just at the point where the waves are most likely to overtop? Or throughout the affected area I wonder?

I've heard rumours of FGW organising celebrations in Dawlish on reopening, possibly involving 60163 Tornado working the sleepers, anyone else heard this?

Yeah but they wont let the likes of you and me on it, we are not 'special' enough!<D

They will have all the pompous 'oh look at me' brigade on it while the people who should be on it (thats the people who actually fixed it by the way) can only look on from the sidelines.

Just open the fullipin line so the railstaff can get on with the day job and the repairers can sit down for a well earned pint or 3.

I would imagine The Dawlish Air Show will attract more visitors this year than ever, many to see the wall itself.

Regarding a celebration I should think the engineers who are working tirelessly should receive a 'bonus' in their salary.

Regarding a train then lets get a 'King' down with some vintage GWR coaches to run some shuttles between Exeter and Newton Abbot over some summer weekends.

Sounded crazy to me as well, but presumably there must have originally been some substance to it to cause FGW to put an end to it in that way.

That's been done before, called the Dawlish Donkey, but it didn't make enough money, which is why we now have the Torbay Express from Bristol to Kingswear on summer Sundays.

From a purely selfish point of view, I'd love to travel on a sleeper train hauled by a steam engine but it's never going to happen. Wouldn't be economical or to make it economical I probably wouldn't want to spent the reasonable but costly asking price.

If I was to travel on a sleeper train in 2014 for a long restful sleep, a steam locomotive would be the last method of haulage that I would choose.

If doing steam on the Riviera sleeper, i would use double headed Castles or if one available, a King, not an LNER engine like an A1.
