I'm thinking of going to Colchester United's newish and no doubt mundane ;) stadium on 22nd March.

An advance 1st class return from Stoke is £83, however by making my way to Wolverhampton I can get a 2nd class advance return for £33 plus either an £8 advance return from SOT to Wolverhampton or the usual 2nd class return £14 off peak return.

I aim to be in Colchester at about 11am so that I can tick a couple of GBG pubs whilst I'm in the area and can leave at 530pm earliest. Can anyone suggest either a similarly priced more flexible alternative or a cheaper option?

No railcard.

Do you mean Advance singles each way as there is no such thing as an Advance return?

A semi-flexible option without involving LM is a Virgin Saturday Travelcard (now confusingly named Super Off-Peak Day Travelcard) for £39.80 and a Boundary Zone 6 - Colchester Super Off-Peak Day Return at £18.80 or a Romford - Colchester one at £17.20. If using the Romford ticket, you must use trains that stop at Romford.

There is still some availability on a number of departures from Stoke. You must travel on the booked service between Stoke and Euston, but you may use any service on the return leg in the evening.

I can't think of anything cheaper without the use of LM.

Thanks for that. I did mean advance singles. Silly question time, how do I book a Boundary Zone 6 to Colchester super off peak day return online? Is there a station code for that? It certainly gives more flexibility.

With regard to LM, only used them a couple of times but I don't think I'd be back in London in time for the last cattle truck back to Stoke.

You can't book Boundary Zone tickets online unfortunately.

If you turn up at Stoke-On-Trent ticket office with plenty of time, they should be able to issue it. If they don't know how to issue then give them some help with these codes :

Origin 0072 BOUNDARY ZONE 6
Destination 0254 COLCHESTER STNS

Ok, ta for the info. Is this something available from the Virgin guard or would his portable machine not cope with it?

The guard should be able to issue it from the Avantix if provided with the codes above.

It isn't even as good as mundane, but the pubs will make up for it. The Bricklayers is closest to Colchester North station, and close to the buses to the ground. There are lots of good pubs in Colchester, The Odd One Out (and it is) is a short walk from Colchester Town station. Plenty more to chose from.
