Hiya again!

Wanting to go from Chesterfield to Liverpool and back on 12 Feb, preferably leaving Chesterfield as soon after 8am as possible, but going as directly as I can.

Plan so far is:

Chesterfield - Manchester Piccadilly 8.20am £12 Advance
Manchester Piccadilly - Liverpool Lime Street - Manchester Piccadilly Off Peak Day Return £12.00
Manchester Piccadilly - Chesterfield 17.43/18.43/19.43 £9/7/4 Advance (not sure what time I want yet)

Is there something better I could do?

Splitting at Sheffield is slightly cheaper.

Chesterfield - Sheffield Anytime Day Return £6.30
Sheffield (08.41) - Liverpool L St (10.31) Advance £14
Liverpool L St (18.52) - Sheffield (20.35) Advance £7

Total: £27.30

Depending on how time-critical your arrival at Liverpool is, you can get it slightly cheaper still in the morning arriving 27 minutes later.

Sheffield (08.41) - Manchester Piccadilly (09.36) Advance £6
Manchester Piccadilly (10.07) - Liverpool L St (10.58) Advance £3 (if booked via this TPE Sale link before 31st January)

Even if you have to arrive at 10.31, you can still save £1 by buying the above ticket to Manchester, and a separate Manchester Piccadilly (09.37) - Liverpool L St (10.31) Advance for £7.

You need to change at Manchester Piccadilly if getting the 10.07, but remain on the same train if using the 09.37.

Similarly on the way back. The 18.22 from Liverpool L St can be had for £3.75 to Manchester Piccadilly, where you change for the 19.43 as in your original plan, if bought via the same TPE Sale link. You will only need a single in the morning between Chesterfield and Sheffield for £5 if you book your return as a through ticket from Manchester to Chesterfield as in your original plan.

Be careful that if you want to be covered for delays in the event of booking a string of Advance tickets, you need to leave at least the minimum connection time at each station where you change trains. This is 10 minutes at Manchester Piccadilly and 7 minutes at Sheffield.

There are plenty of permutations for fares between Chesterfield and Liverpool splitting at either or both of Manchester and Sheffield. Have a play around with booking engines and decide which combination offers you the best value in terms of speed vs cost.

It's slightly cheaper (£1.30) to split these at Widnes also (with a day return to Liverpool, on the same trains).
