How well are the TPE services from Scotland loading at Preston and Wigan southbound on their new route? Much new business at Wigan NW?

I'm told by a well placed source that it picks up a few southbound, drops off a similar number northbound.
Also, a number of EDB/GLC trains still run via Chorley each day.

How are the Bolton-Manchester commuters managing (or should I say struggling?)??
No issue.......I actually work at Bolton Station just now. Just been blown out of all proportion. There is still a train every 7 minutes or so.
Which would encourage Wigan Commuters to avoid the route through Bolton altogether. Like I said , this has been blown out of all proportion....services through Bolton are no more busier than anywhere else.

Ive used it twice offpeak and its been full before arriving in Wigan and full leaving Piccadilly but part of that loadings probably seasonal. The number boarding in Wigan offpeak has been around a dozen and unloading around two dozen though this will probably gradually rise. Passengers at Manchester are still surprised by the change in calls and commenting on the posters more than a fortnight after the timetable change so still seems to be filtering in to the general public conscious, onboard announcements on the services still telling passengers that it wont call at Bolton provoking passenger debate.

Your question is put the wrong way round - the problem that is most likely to arise is for passengers travelling north to stations beyond Bolton who find themselves unable to board at Oxford Road,Deansgate and Salford Crescent. This is because Bolton bound passengers do not have fixed departure times because of the turn up and go nature of the service whereas the frequency of services beyond Bolton falls as a result of the Wigan,Chorley,Darwen divergence - these are the passengers who do have a fixed train in mind. Increased passenger dwell time on platforms at Oxford Road etc, resulting from inability to board, will delay access and egress as the system clogs up.
As Watcher says - seasonal factors come into play - almost every passenger from the airport has a suitcase and the lack of visible racks on older stock often results in aisles being jammed. After the return surge this should normalise by mid January. Another aisle blocker, the buggy surge asociated with family shopping trips should hopefully fall after the January sales surge.
However shortly these arguments are destined to become academic as they get to grips with electrifying from Euxton Junction to Ordsall Lane.

Does anyone remember the Barrow services stopping at Wigan on Sundays, around 2006-07? Think they stopped at Bolton but didn't serve Chorley. Was this just a one-two year trial and were the trains busier than the ones through Chorley? I think it stopped with the new December 2007 timetable when TPE started running to Scotland.

Nah it was the normal timetable and I'm sure it was during 2006 and 2007 (I don't know about earlier years). Like I say they stopped at Bolton but strangely went onwards via Wigan instead of Chorley to Preston.
There was also an early morning 05:30ish Blackpool to Airport service that called Wigan then Bolton; this was during the week, again around '07.

Come to think of it it can't have been engineering work because the Blackpools were routed via Chorley at the same time, it was just the Barrows via Wigan. Seem to recall they didn't stop at Salford Crescent either, but did do during the week.
Which is no worse than any other peak train which is situated 20 mins or so from a main rail station.....be it Manchester Leeds or any of the London stations.
Removing artificial suppression on season ticket prices would go a long way to alleviating this....
