Here is a good example of how the railways are complicated and can't please everyone.
Tonight a broken down train caused congestion on slow lines through Wimbledon. The 18.14 to Woking grok Surbiton was running with over 20 min delay.
The 18.40 fast to basingstoke uses the slow line so would very quickly get stuck behind it if the signalman hadn't switched us to the fast line.may be there was a gap at just the right moment, I said it was complex. I suggest that because in the past we have been left on the slow line, causing me to be half an hour late as I missed two connections, as the guard said we had to let faster trains go through. No delay repay as that must be an hour for SWT.
Anyway clearly we didn't have to do that tonight. However in not doing that both the Alton and Portsmouth services, ended up leaving 10 minutes late from Woking.
Either way they can't win in these situations.
I was very tempted not to board the train at Surbiton, as I was expecting the worse but I chanced it and got lucky. Only 8 mins late into Guildford.
