Yeah, and fitting these with PIS Displays has to happen soon and will be a royal pain on all 1992TS; 1972TS should be an easyer job.

Still, it is a laugh, even with the DMIs indicating where to go; the amount of people waiting on platform 8 for the next train off peak when all trains use platform 7 unless the line is operating in manual...

If that was in Paris, the announcement would be beautifully clear and concise.

On approach it would say simply:

"Bank."

Upon arrival it would say simply:

"Bank."

And that's it.:)

Lille was pretty similar. Trains had two announcements that I heard (didn't go near a terminus) "Station Name" and "PAARRRP" (the french hustle alarm)

The Talents around Berlin say "[BingBong] Next Stop [Station Name] - Change for S & U Bahn" (in German obv) - unfortunately they don't play the first few notes of the regional anthem any more

Although the innotation is always ever so slightly different in the second one, as if to say "I've just said it : Bank"

I was in Rome a couple of weeks ago and used the Metro. In addition to the usual "next station is..." announcements, it also announces which side the doors will open on, which is very useful. I'd like to see this spread to the Tube!

It already has; the 2009 stock on the Victoria line makes those announcements (the Vic has platforms all over the place due to mainly being built around other lines) and it's going to be a standard feature on all new tube stock too.

I know, I've used it many times. My point was that when it stops, you're where you want to be. You know where you got on...

(And, yes, I'm joking at the expense of those who would need such an announcement - like the visually impaired, deaf etc).

It's actually a fairly long journey time (5 mins) compared with other stop-to-stop distances on other lines.

I'd hardly call it all over the place, the only platforms that are not at termini that don't have both platforms on the right hand side are Warren Street, Kings Cross St. Pancras (Both due to Euston), Highbury & Islington and Finsbury Park....

So in the core section it's only Warren St (Hardly used by non-regulars) and Kings Cross St. Pancras that aren't on the right.

Also; Isn't fitted to S Stock yet, until the new signalling systems come online you can't gaurentee platforms at places like Harrow OTH, Wembley Park, Baker Street, Earls Court, and to a lesser extent Rayners Lane, Acton Town, etc.

An opportunity for Emma C to add to her spoof list -

  • The doors will open on - the inside... and the outside :D

London Underground regret to inform you that London has been destroyed by a Soviet thermonuclear device, which may cause delays to Central Line services today. A good service is operating on all other lines.

Stations are being manned by a skeleton staff....;)

I had a thought last night of something that'd be even worse than my Waterloo and City announcement!

"Welcome on board this London Underground Central Line service to Epping, calling at Ruislip Gardens, South Ruislip, Northolt, Greenford, Perivale, Hangar Lane, North Acton, East Acton, White City, Shepherd's Bush, Holland Park, Notting Hill Gate, Queensway, Lancaster Gate, Marble Arch, Bond Street, Oxford Circus, Tottenham Court Road, Holborn, Chancery Lane, St. Paul's, Bank, Liverpool Street, Bethnal Green, Mile End, Stratford, Leyton, Leytonstone, Snaresbrook, South Woodford, Woodford, Buckhurst Hill, Loughton, Debdon, Theydon Bois and Epping. Then next station will be Ruislip Gardens. This is coach number 5 of 8. We are now approaching Ruislip Gardens"

Almost as bad as the PIS on Shenfield Metros before it got changed.
"This train is for Shenfield, we will also be calling at Maryland etc etc. We are now approaching Maryland. This is Maryland. This train is for... on and on and on
On the original theme, on the GE 321's PIS it has emergency messages with a howling siren about evacuating, move to front/rear of train, doctor onboard etc

I think one of the Central Line drivers has been reading this thread.

Just after leaving East Acton: "This is a Central Line train calling at all stations to West Ruislip. The next station is North Acton. Change for services to Ealing Broadway. Once again, this train calls at Hanger Lane, ........ and West Ruislip. Change at the next station for West Acton and Ealing Broadway." [Followed by automated announcement]

At North Acton: "This train calls at Hanger Lane, ........ and West Ruislip."

Just as we thought the announcements were over, on departing Ruislip Gardens: "The next station is West Ruislip where this train terminates. Please can you take a moment to ensure you have all your belongings with you, checking the seats and floor to make sure you haven't dropped anything. Also make sure you take any umbrellas and suitcases that you may have. Change at West Ruislip for local buses and also Chiltern services towards Marylebone, Northolt Park, Sudbury and Birmingham Moor Street, calling at Denham, Denham Golf Club .... [nearly all stations between] and Birmingham Moor Street. Once again, the next station is West Ruislip. All change please, all change, all change please."

That final announcement took the full three minutes between Gardens and West Ruislip. He even mentioned Denham Golf Club*! But credit to him for remembering that there is life beyond the boundaries of London.

* = Locals appear to use "it even calls at Denham Golf Club" as a method of implying the train is a stopper.

There was one guard I met on the Chiltern Parliamentary from Paddington who was slightly saddened that a lady who boarded it at South Ruislip wanted to change trains and go to Denham, and "not the Golf Club, I'm afraid".

I think it would really have made his day if she'd come from Sudbury & Harrow Road, but that would probably not have been feasible at that time of day...

Going incredibly off topic, but I believe that nicholas owen was not the first announcer on trams, there was another, much more casual sounding man that used to do them. Does anyone have any details on this?

That's right - it was around the mid noughties that Nick Owen was installed. I'm afraid I don't know the name of the original voice but I know that the female voice is Theo Spring (who was added in 2007)

On the recent engineering works, where the Piccadilly was routed along the slow lines (between Hammersmith and Acton Town) calling at all stations, I was surprised the 73 stock had these stations programmed into it e.g. "This is Ravenscourt Park, this is a Piccadilly line train to Uxbridge." I have seen a video on YouTube which the 73 stock announcements also has West Kensington and High Street Kensington programmed into it!

The 09 stock on the Victoria line does not announce which side the doors will open on approach to Seven Sisters n/b as of course trains carrying on to Walthamstow can use either platform 3 or 4.

The 09 stock announcements also have the ability to cut out a line which is closed at an interchange station such as the recent Jubilee closure. "This is Green Park, change here for the Piccadilly line. This is a Victoria line train to Walthamstow"

I heard that although the intermediate stations are announced, Ealing Broadway was not. Trains were shown as terminating at Ealing Common, with manual announcements being made.

It could only have been better if they also had Ealing Broadway as an acceptable destination. When I went there the train's destination was said to be Ealing Common

Ealing Broadway is programmed into the announcements but I guess it needs to be manually selected (again on the YouTube video it does announce Ealing Broadway) though I don't know why the train cannot display Ealing Broadway on the front.

This is the YouTube video being referred to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHjEpEMM6fk

"Attention. As part of a routine safety procedure, this train is about to move slowly forward and then stop suddenly. Please use any seats available or if standing, hold on tight. The train will then continue moving at a reduced speed."

What sort of safety procedure is that? A PoSA?

Passing a signal at danger, with authority (a process known in London Underground parlance as "applying the rule"). The signal's trainstop will apply the emergency brakes on the train, resulting in quite a jolt. District Dave once wrote an article on the rule, and applying it.

I don't think anybody knows what the full name of "the rule" actually is :p

A PoSA is a type of signal, not a procedure, and is used on National Rail infrastructure. "Proceed on Sight Authority". Approach a signal at danger, the position light will start to flash two white lights, it means that although the signal is unable to clear, the route is set and you are authorised to proceed.

Good point yes, 09TS do have those announcements setup within their system as I have observed an 09 saying 'National Rail services from Tottenham Hale are suspended.", this was when all West Anglia services were diverted via Seven Sisters and nothing was running via Tottenham Hale.

FWIW, these announcements are not controlled by the driver through the PIS. They are controlled from the service control room by the Line Information Specialist.
