Hi,

I just started in the railways 2 months ago. I am working in the system department running test over the equipment on the trackside in the victoria line.

I need to implement a program that runs while we are running the test and show what the train is actually finding on the track. So I thought a good idea was to use OpenBVE and simulate the route.

I have already designed the route with 4 stations, it's good enough (visually). But now, what I need is to run it but with inputs from the system, for example the position of the train.

Do you know if it's possible to run a route in openbve without a train? and tell the program to go though the route just using and external input as it could be the position of the virtual train?

Could it be possible also to run a non fixed route? I mean, the route has points and they could be normal or reverse, taking one route or another. Could we pass on the positions of the points to the program and run the virtual train from the starting station to the end of the route set.

Thank you very much. I would be very grateful if somebody could help me out.

Perhaps you could use the RouteViewer, as that follows the track without needing a train. It does though move at a constant speed, so would assume that at different speeds you would have to vary the rate at which you send a 'forward' movement, if you see what I mean.

Oh, and things like signals would be purely decorative, at their default state, etc.

Could I ask (answer via PM) where you're now working and in what capacity and I may be able to help more by pointing you in the right direction.

As an asside, almost all VLU trackside equipment is SIL-4 or SIL-2 rated and safety critical, is BVE the best of ideas?

mmm I didn't know anything about this program. I'll have a look at it, though I do not think it's useful for what I want if, in the end I won't be able to change the state of signals or the route itself.
Many thanks for your quick replay seawolf.

Yes sure. Could you explain how to send you a PM? I am new here and I couldn't find the way...

I was just using BVE because I was provided with that program, but I after looking into it I do not think it's the best idea. The point is that I don't know which is the best program to use...

If you could send me a PM that I can reply or an email it would be nice.

Thanks for your help.

In your User's control panel (User CP on the toolbar at the top) you have Send new private message to the left. It takes you to:
http://railforums.co.uk/private.php?do=newpm

The RouteViewer is, by the way, used for amking BVE routes as a previewer so you can make sure things are in the right place. You write the route in a CSV-type file saying, as position X I want this.
