I have been sent this stakeholder update from ATW, I am sharing it for info and comments. The statement about Geralds new time and extra stops is Media room talk, the writer omits to say Gerald will have less stops in the North,Gobowen is no longer a stop, even though it has a giant hospital taking in patients from all over Wales.

Performance

Arriva Trains Wales climbed two positions to fifth of the 19 UK Train Operating Companies during this period. We are in second position in our ‘Class’ behind Merseyrail (96.3%) and ahead of Scotrail (92.1%) and Northern (91.9%).

Overall PPM (Public Performance Measure) during the four week period was an excellent 96%. This is above the Group target of 95.3%. This was a big improvement on the previous period where Overall PPM (Public Performance Measure) during the four week period was 93.3%. This was below our own target of 94.9%.

The most disruptive incident of a generally good period was on 5 October, when police requested services be stopped between Cardiff Queen Street and Heath Junction due to a firearms incident in the area. This incident resulted in 944 delay minutes and 31 cancellations. The full performance report can be found here.

News in brief

Association of Community Rail Partnership Awards – The business hosted the 2013 ACORP awards and Community Rail Festival in Llandudno. Frodsham station won the ‘Best use for station buildings’ category following its recent £400,000 renovation.

Phil Caldwell, our Cambrian Line Schools’ Liaison Officer was highly commended for his school safety project involving more than 400 children along the Cambrian Coast. A special train formed of ‘Premier Class’ rolling stock took more than 200 guests from Llandudno to Blaenau Ffestiniog the following day and onwards to Porthmadog courtesy of the Ffestiniog Railway. More details can be found here.

Winter Timetable Improvements – a number of improvements are planned from the beginning of the new timetable in December to help with capacity issues and new journey opportunities on certain routes. The ‘North – South’ Premier Service delivered in partnership with the Welsh Government is being retimed to an earlier departure of 1716 from Cardiff and will include additional stops en-route to Holyhead. Additional carriages will also be provided on some commuter services between Maesteg, Ebbw Vale and Cardiff, in addition to selected longer distance services between Manchester and South Wales. With Energlyn Station due to open next month, we’re also ensuring that our services are planned to provide regular stops at the new facilities. We are advising passengers to check to see if there have been any changes to their journeys by going here.

Transport Minister announces measures to make rail travel in Wales easier and more affordable – We are pleased to have worked alongside the Welsh Government on reviewing our fares for 2014. We are determined to continue offering affordable and value for money fares on all our routes. This year all Arriva Trains Wales’ priced season tickets will increase at less than inflation, so will represent even better value for those using the train to commute to work. Further details of the Minister’s announcement can be found by going here.

‘Love your station!’ Keep Wales Tidy Awards 2013 – Arriva Trains Wales is working in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy to encourage everyone to responsibly dispose of litter and help us present a welcoming environment to passengers at stations. You can now cast your vote to choose Wales’ tidiest railway station. More than 100 of Wales’ small unstaffed stations have been adopted by volunteers and organisations as part of Arriva Trains Wales’ adopt a station initiative. Many are lovingly cared for with colourful floral displays and artwork produced by local children and young people. First impressions really do count so to have your say, go on-line and vote for Wales’ Best Kept Staffed and Unstaffed Stations. You can find more information and vote by going here.

National Assembly Enterprise and Business Committee Inquiry into the future of the Wales and Borders Franchise – Arriva Trains Wales was pleased to provide evidence to the inquiry into the future of the Wales and Borders franchise and looks forward to helping with the on-going development of future opportunities for rail services in Wales and the Borders. The written submission to the enquiry can be viewed by visiting the committee’s page here.

‘Time to Change’ Campaign - Arriva Trains Wales has publically signed up to the ‘Time to Change’ pledge, committing itself to ensure that our workplace is supportive of employees with mental health problems. Over the next few months, Arriva Trains Wales will be working with Time to Change to develop a comprehensive action plan that will integrate our existing mental well-being employee services with any new initiatives that we aim to develop.

‘Stoptober’ – We are promoting the ‘Stoptober’ initiative to help raise awareness among employees who may need help and support to give up smoking. Chief Medical Officer for Wales, Dr Ruth Hussey visited Cardiff Central to see how the campaign will be encouraging workers at Arriva Trains Wales to take up the Stoptober challenge to give up smoking for 28 days during October. Further details can be found here.

Marketing campaigns launched – ‘Club 55’ has been running successfully, offering those over 55 years of age ‘off-peak’ tickets from £23. The offer runs until 30 November 2013. Meanwhile, ‘Advance’ fares to a number of destinations across our network are being promoted as part of the ‘Big Cities, Tiny Train Ticket’ campaign. Full details can be found by going here.

Chartered Institute of Public Relations PRide Cymru Awards – Arriva Trains Wales was awarded Silver in the Issues and Crisis Communications Management category at the CIPR PRide awards for its handling of the Cardiff Landslip incident during London 2012. The customer communication, media relations activity during the incident, as well as the partnership working with Network Rail and others were recognised. Information can be found here.

No mention made of the very large ATW Club 55 percentage increase to £23 from that which was offered previously. Just the current price of £23..<(

And more restrictions to boot.Plus it appeared a last minute decision in my opinion being announced the day it was launched, thus taking all booking office staff by surprise.

in a nutshell in my situation, I could catch Gerald from Chester(Prior to Wrexham route) via the 0600 ex Wrexham to Chester, catch Gerald at 0712 arrive Cardiff 1002 for £15 rtn. Via Wrexham catch Gerald at 0732 for £18(if i recall).
Now no over 55s prior to 0930 departure in 98% of routes.Cost £23.
Travel using a Club 55 ticket is not permitted before 0930 Monday to Friday except between the following locations:

• Shrewsbury – to or from Aberystwyth/Pwllheli

• Shrewsbury – to or from Llanelli/Swansea via Llandrindod

• Llandudno Junction – to or from Holyhead/Llandudno/Blaenau Ffestiniog

• Swansea – to or from Milford Haven/Pembroke Dock/Fishguard Harbour.

Travel is not permitted into London Marylebone before 1000, or departing London Marylebone between 1600 and 1900 on Monday to Friday..

Colleagues could do Wilmslow/Pembroke Dock in a day up to last Spring for £18 rtn, someone will come up with the current longest route.

Heres the current T&C http://www.arrivatrainswales.co.uk/Club55/TandCs/

So in a nutshell, the new restrictions have taken what could be described as off peak fares out of the peak period?

It began at £15 (railcard £13) and crept up to £19 (£18).
Then they added a £5 premium on Fridays.
The time limit used to be no arrival into MAN/BHM/CDF before 0930.

This year the price has gone up to £23 (£28 on Fridays), and the time restriction is now 0930 departure, so early peak-hour-busting trips (like travelling on Gerald) are out.
Also I don't think there is an FGW add-on this year, but the marketing is so poor I have never seen a proper list of terms and conditions.

And then the time-frame for the offer is now very short (though I suppose it might reappear in the new year).
Other years it has been advertised all through the low season September-May, except Christmas/New Year and Easter.
They appear to be crippling the scheme, as happened to the Network Railcard.
Maybe it was too good an offer.

On the surface , it would seem silly offering leisure fares in the peak period, particularly when overcrowding on peak trains features high on the complaint rate table....

Just to draw a comparison, First TPE also ran a Club 55 short-period offer this autumn that did not appear to have such a dramatic price increase and they also offered a 20% discount for holders of the Senior Citizen Railcard which gave a standard class day return journey from Manchester Airport to Cleethorpes for the miserly sum of only £14.40, which I took advantage of on a Saturday when the 0930 time restriction did not apply.

Would you have undertook that journey if there had been no offer?

Yes I would, as that particular Saturday was the final 2013 Saturday on the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway and that day was the best day that I had felt since my medical relapse three months ago and I had not made my usual annual visit to that iconic narrow-gauge railway this year.

There is no peak between north and south Wales (supposedly they are trying to fill the largely empty trains through the Marches).
With the old conditions you could do Holyhead-Fishguard in a (long) day for £15, using Gerald both ways and the boat train between Cardiff and Fishguard (or go to Swansea or up the Valleys) - all half-empty.

Ok .....but where is the attraction to the general public in those particular circumstances? As I am miles away from any station in Wales, I really dont see anything to tempt me to get on a train off peak ......

Maybe the alternative is to combine off peak leisure fares with an attraction? A sort of 2 for the price of 1 ??

ATWs routes which apply are the Wales & Borders franchise,Manchester,Birmingham, plus any other station out of franchise ATW serve.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I would want significantly more than £18 to travel from Wilmslow to Pembroke Dock and back on Arriva Trains Wales...

They spent half an hour at Pembroke Dock and returned on the same train.
Perhaps I should have said "Did" Wilmslow to Pembroke Dock:)

I ve just had a look at Arrivas website, and indeed the idea I mentioned earlier does exist in the form of a Explore Wales Pass.

I ve no idea how popular these are, but interestingly, cannot be bought online or over telephone

Originally ATW's Club 55 tickets meant you could use the return half on any day within a month of your outward journey. The last couple of years this has been drastically cut to eight days, and with the Fridays restriction/extra cost it makes it hardly worth the hassle if you fancy a few days away, especially compared with Advance tickets (and even more so with a railcard!).

one of these days I ll do a short break in Wales and take in some of the narrow gauge operations.

Last year I had a day in Conway on a glorious early summer day, took a photo of one of the best sunsets I have ever seen overlooking the estuary ...

surprised no one as taken this up

Additional carriages will also be provided on some commuter services between Maesteg, Ebbw Vale and Cardiff, in addition to selected longer distance services between Manchester and South Wales. With Energlyn Station due to open next month, we’re also ensuring that our services are planned to provide regular stops at the new facilities.

Does this mean more 158s on the Manchester to South West Wales run four carriages,or pinching some three car 175s from somewhere to replace two car 175s

I wonder if the extra carriages for the Ebbw Vale services will just be the same services they recently strengthened.

It might help things if those class 158/175's were taken off the Cardiff - Ebbw Vale services.

As I've said before if there are 3 158s in South Wales and they work within, the pattern of services i.e. Maesteg, Fishguard, Cheltenham, Ebbw Vale they cannot avoid working a number of Ebbw Vale services. We think there will be one back on the Fishguard Boats. 175s work to Ebbw Vale but not diagrammed and you can't always legislate for alterations to workings on any particular day which can be down to 101 reaons.

I see from Twitter than once again several services heading north, from or through Cardiff, are full and standing today. When will they get the message that not everyone goes home straight after a major rugby match at the Millennium Stadium? Just because it's a Sunday doesn't alter the fact that a large number of people wish to travel home, having stayed the night after the match.

I was on one such service last Sunday and not only was it unbearably full, but most of the travellers were hungover . Also the train for some reason had at least one of the heating vents on full blast, and all the windows (it was a Sprinter) were shut. Most unpleasant, so much so that I will now actively avoid Sundays when there has been an event at the Stadium.

I won't take away from the fact that they seem to manage extremely well immediately after games, and seem to be highly organized with their queueing system at Cardiff, but it doesn't all end on Saturday night, and they need to address the problem of Sundays before they lose more weekend leisure passengers.

175s on the Ebbw line,I must try the service on New Years Day,when its the only Valley Lines service operating:)
The lack of New Years Day services on the Cardiff Valley Network goes back to the 90s when a decision was taken to withdraw them due lack of use and this was carried forward into the Cardiff valley franchise on privatisation. Nobody has bothered to change this situation ever since during a period when travel, shopping and sporting habits have changed. ATWs only response would seem to be "Not a Franchise requirement". You mention a trip to Ebbw Vale which is quite farcical as the type of areas are virtually identical and this route is just "over the hill" from the Rhymney Line. Also farcical is that Grangetown and stations to Barry have a service operated by Bridgend trains via the VOG route which re-opened in 2005 and was given a franchised service. I stand to be corrected on this but I have heard that it is part of Traincrews contracts that they don't work New Years Day.

I was down there yesterday wanting to catch the 1035 CDF-MAN, but when 150282 turned up all on its own off Canton, I decided to do a detour via Birmingham on a well loaded yet quiet 3-car 170 on the Nottingham, to New Street on my way to Manchester! Ironically, we were held outside of Piccadilly waiting the very same unit to exit the station, but it had a 158 on the back of it this time!

Yes. Attaches 158 at Manchester Picc off last train from Chester Saturday nights which becomes stranded there due to route closures for Engineering Work.

O-oh, just discovered that Cardiff play at Manchester United on Sunday 24th, kick off 4.00 (that's p.m. - 1600 doesn't seem right for a football time ).

On the basis that I'd bet ATW will put on a 2-coach Sprinter for the only service through Hereford that gets to MAN in reasonable time for fans to get to the ground, i.e. the train which I just happen to have an Advance ticket for, I've just bought another Advance to travel on Monday instead, and will once again waste my Sunday one .

Thought I'd been clever ensuring no rugger in Cardiff next weekend, forgot about the large number of both Cardiff and Welsh Man Utd supporters who will no doubt travel to the game. Could be an 'interesting' journey actually, especially on the way back afterwards!

Another catalogue of "full and standing"s today too for some reason. What on earth is going on?

It's not in the franchise agreement the Arriva answer for everything!
