This morning, the Government announced that this much delayed project, costing £16bn at 2007 prices, has been given the go ahead.

Work is scheduled to commence in 2010, with completion in 2017.

The line infrastructure will run from Maidenhead in Berkshire to Stratford in East London.

Ten miles of this main line gauge railway will be in tunnel.

Why would it be in UIC 'C' loading gauge??? AFAIK, it's intended for passenger use only, not as a shortcut for freight. There's enough routes across London for freight as it is.

Sniff. Snifff.

Yup. I'm picking up distinct smell of an election.

I wonder if this will still be on afterwards...

Brilliant news! I hope they follow it through. I have a particular interest in Crossrail.

I was thinking along the lines of it being a possible future connection from HS1 to LHR.

Anyone know if they intent to intergrate it with the tube or will it be a JLE style job with its own platforms and some cases its own ticket office and long walkways?

Will Isle of Dogs station even have a link to the JLE will it be a nice walk?

It'll be integrated into the stations as much as is possible ...

Isle of Dogs doesn't have a JLE station does it? I thought that was part of extension 'plan 2 if we couldn't go to Stratford but it turns out we could so we put the space for the junction in anyway'....

So it is... I think it's more likely that it'll be an entirely separate station with that name though!

This still goes via Farringdon right? The Thameslink line will be blocked enough as it is without this creating a blockade once more...

Even the Victoria line has room for improvement...

Just to clear things up, this is the isle of dogs:

If crossfail didn't serve the canary (canis = dog) wharf complex I think it would have been slung out years ago.

Much as I like the old metropolitan station, I feel the station should be completely rebuilt (as was done before), and turned into a world-class interchange, "double decker" interchange if possible, between the north-south and east-west London National Rail routes.

I was thinking along the lines of it being a possible future connection from HS1 to LHR.
I also like the idea of trains coming from the GEML or kent domestic train finding their way onto the CTRL from stratford and then coming off towards paddington, a crossrail express line which will make the CTRL tunnel section far more useful, but it's never gonna happen.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Furthermore, Crossfail seems to being built to relieve congestion on the underground lines and not to serve for any long distance traffic. If this is confirmed to be the case the central tunnels might as well be built to tube diameter and the money saved, possibly half the cost, could be used to build extra tracks on the GEML and GWML, hopefully satisfying EWS's wishes.

And think of the disruption that will cause to FCC Thameslink users would face?

I think a full gauge route would prove far more usefull that tube guage.

Let's have a list of daily or at least weekly uses. You may well be right but as the current scheme stands I can't see much use.

I'd rather see the money spent on HS2 - an extension of HS1 from St Pancras northwards.

I'd like to see Welwyn four tracking before that, as well as ipswich-oxford, and more specifically to my region, witham - stanstead.

If it's YOUR region, you should know that 'stanstead' is spelt 'STANSTED'. :) :)

I blame Tommykin's spell checker. I wrote Stansted first then changed it as an after thought when it got underlined. Trouble is isn't in the dictionary and only rechecks after selecting another word.

One problem Nick - the spell checker that you can see is a built in Safari one...
