You were responding to the idea that platform screen doors could be fitted to to "mainline" platforms to prevent suicides (which is impractical mainly because of door positions, though some of the examples shown suggest this can be overcome)

Re-read the entire thread and listen to what he is saying himself now! The comments about not being to do with suicides clearly related to the jubilee line only I'm afraid.

Well behind on the joke I probably am, but the latest myth hot off the press is...

e-Voyager is going ahead!

[Only because I saw one of these in town ;)]

It's to reduce the turbulence in tube tunnels caused as the train passes from a narrow tunnel to a wider tunnel (the platform).

If it was to reduce trespass then they would have sprung up in a lot more places since they were installed on the Jubilee line in 1999.

If turbulence is the reason why they are on the Jubilee Line platforms, maybe there is a case for having them on the main line platforms at Wembley Central

Mainline platforms have different types if stock using them so they arnt practicle. And as very little stops at wembley central there is no business case for them.

What does that have to do with ATO?

I thought you were on about installing the doors at mainline stations (which is where this thread had drifted to) and drivers not stop in the correct place.

The thread has drifted a bit! ;)

Myth Exp. 12:39: All Central Trains services were delayed because if they needed a driver for an Inter-City service they used to just take one of Central Trains.

Myth middle: Central Trains was a really bad operator for all their services and never operated a train correctly.

Myth 88/95: Its perfectly reasonable to compare London Midland with Chiltern Railways for punctuality as they are both rail companies and they operate very similar services.

Myth that has probably been mentioned already: It's completely clear to everyone on Railforums when you're using "the tube" to mean only deep lines rather than all London Underground lines.

Myth: Continued bashing of the train door buttons before they light up will all of a sudden magically open the doors quicker before the guard even unlocks them
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Myth: 323s only have one carriage during peak times and that's normally the carriage the stops at the platform closest to where everyone is standing.

Myth no 319.377 On evening peak FCC services to Brighton only the front coach is available for passenger use, even if it is a 12 coach train. Or that's what some passengers seem to think.

Myths regarding the "200 carriages" for northern England, suggested under the last Labour Government seem to have grown arms and legs...

  • It wasn't a net increase of 200 carriages
  • It wasn't 200 new carriages (cascades from South East/ Midlands were expected - although since the "200 carriages plan" never got beyond the Drawing Board, we'll never know the actual proportion of *new* carriages)
  • It's not just "the North" which lost out when the plan changed - there were going to be 1,300 carriages ordered in total for the UK)
  • It wasn't a franchise commitment
  • It wasn't a manifesto commitment
  • It wasn't guaranteed (and has been superseded by electrification commitments that will see quite an increase in capacity, by the time we find out what each route will receive)

...yet I keep reading that we were promised these 200 carriages and the lack of them is used to cast a shadow over any other improvements. Basically, it was one "jam tomorrow" idea from a Government that proposed a lot of "jam tomorrow" ideas (that weren't all necessarily funded/ guaranteed), but this one seems to be used as a "baseline" for any other improvements.

Myth (Camden Town alternative): Barging people out of the way to bash the buttons on the 95/96 TS speeds up your exit even more, and you can feel smug knowing you outsmarted the people who use the Northern Line every sodding day.

Passengers are always right and front line staff are always wrong and their decisions should be overruled by Managers in the name of "good" Customer Service.

Myth: A ticket marked 'Grand Central only' is valid on an East Coast service because 'a member of staff told me so'.
Shame on that member of staff if true, but really - I doubt that was what they actually said.

Further to this-

A customer should be allowed to use any ticket on any train in the name of good customer service, any member of staff making people stick to the terms of their ticket is obviously a jobsworth, little hitler, rude, aggressive etc etc etc and is in no way doing their job correctly!

Myth running 6 trains per hour though Stoke-on-Trent is completely possible with no knock on effect with delays because a Class 153 has gone in front of a delayed Voyager.

Myth Number 43024: If you stare out a door on an HST it will always be so afraid of you that it will open on it's own.
Myth number 43025: It is perfectly acceptable to huff/tut/[insert condescending gesture], when your staring contest fails and the guy standing behind you, excuses himself, opens the droplight, and uses the door handle.

It is fine to stick your head out of the window on a train even though the staff don't like it.
