Locomotives classes are given the number based on power. So the higher up you go the more powerful the locomotive

So a Class 67 is more powerful than a 66?

And on the issue of simultaneous use of the same number, there are currently two 70013s on the national network...;)

The class 53 was the Diesel electric version of a Western :). It was called Falcon iirc and numbered D1200 it had the same Maybach MD655 engines as a Western. It was aprototype that spent most of its time running round in South Wales, freight mainly iirc. It never carried the number 53001 though so I guess that whole class would have always been re-usable. Any rail vehicle number can be re-used if the original vehicle stopped carrying it a long time ago. I don't know what a long time is , I think tens of years. Someone else will know.

Sorry but whilst using the same engine as westerns it wasnt a diesel electric version. It was built as a private venture for trials as a possible type 4, other contenders were DP2, and BRCW Lion. Eventually it the 47 was ordered . Falcon was purchased iutright at a time in the early 70!s when there was a shortage of type4's for freight. It was a very interesting loco with a very interesting career of which only the later part was in south Wales on freight

Did you not read the part of my post that said there was an exception where Classes 55, 56, 58, 59, 60, 66 & 67 are all around the same power, rather than going up in power as you move up through the classes ?

There were more exceptions than that.

24/25/26/27 are not in engine hp order they are 1160/1250/1160/1250 hp.

And, depending on which reference you use, 42s/43s were 2270 / 2200 hp (based on BR 1966 Diagram Book; other sources may quote other values).

29/30/31 were out of sequence being 1350/1250/147 hp.

28 were 1200 hp so right out of place with all of 24-27.

I'm sure there are others.

Gosh!

Some very detailed explanation to a very straightforward question!

Surely whatever happens will have to be relatively straightforward and certainly logical for most people to understand?!?!?!?
