And according to FCCs twitter today after the mill hill incident, TOCs should have platform doors like the jubilee line has as this would prevent all suicides. The only reason that they don't is because they would prefer to line their pockets with the money. Nothing to do with stations not being owned by the TOC or the fact that platform doors are completely impractical and unworkable on the mainline for numerous reasons and the fact that people could still jump infront of trains using other means.

Quite. Also pax don't think of the fact that BTP have to be involved, and that the train involved is going to need another driver to take it to depot to be cleaned because there's no way it can continue in service without that happening and the poor driver is not going to be in a fit state to carry on, and that some poor sod has to go on the track and pick up the remains.

It's to reduce the turbulence in tube tunnels caused as the train passes from a narrow tunnel to a wider tunnel (the platform).

If it was to reduce trespass then they would have sprung up in a lot more places since they were installed on the Jubilee line in 1999.

Is this a myth? If not, I've learnt something tonight

Platform doors require accurate positioning on the platform and usually need ATO for that.

And the fact that that's not what platform screen doors are even designed for.

It might not be what the ones on the Jubilee Line Extension are for (else they'd have been installed, at a minimum, on the above-surface stations on the extension and the rest of the line- the "legacy" deep stations would be trickier), but it is certainly what they're for in some installations in other countries.

Or to sum up: Metro is anything other than some pretty pictures to distract you while your train becomes ten minutes late.

Myth 9x9 grid: The contents of a Metro are sufficiently interesting, diverting and thought-provoking to distract me from the fact that the train I'm on is becoming 10 minutes late. At no point do I find the contents of Realtime Trains or the National Rail live departure boards more relevant to what is happening to my journey.

Myth 23m5ch: I am horribly disappointed to find that stations just outside the outskirts of London don't have a Metro in time for the first train of the day for which my off-peak ticket is valid. At no point am I relieved that I am no longer tempted to read such a beautifully-written, quality journal.

Since we are talking about The Metro:

Myth number M34R0:

Those "I watch you board the 08:19 at Watford every morning, I love your new blue jacket" Lonely Hearts things that they have in Metro are in no way creepy or stalkerish - I'm sure anyone recognising themselves in one would be proud and in no way freaked out!

I'm sure a colleague of mine sent one of those in as a prank and it got printed! Something about the TM looking super-hot in his uniform! I have never considered my uniform having sex-appeal!

I might write in about the red jacket of a Virgin conductor really matching the colour of their eyes...

It's not a myth.

The preventing trespass thing is a myth though, and quite a commonly-believed one it seems. We can add it to the list

Quite...The safety aspect is a convenient secondary feature of PEDs. Honest guv. ;)

I've always thought those tailored waistcoats that are part of some TOC's (male) uniform is quite sexy  .

Taking the Myth: Because I or my revenue team saw your ticket this morning when you were on your way to work means you do not have to show it to me/us again when you return in the evening.

*I like me job but im not stayin ghtere for 12 hours just to do revenue checks, no matter how certain they are that it was me this morning

Myth loner: If you don't want to sit next to other passengers then its important to put a bag or other large item on the seat next to you or sit on the aisle side.

I used to wear them. Stopped wearing them for some reason. I think sudden weight gain made me feel they weren't very flattering for me anymore. A mistake, obviously! I shall have to order some more! ;)

Myth standardresponse: people sit in the aisle seat because they want two seats to themselves, not because the seat pitch is so pathetic they need to do so to fit their knees in.

Except that no one has suggested that, the ones on the jubilee line were not installed for suicide prevention but for other reasons.

Um, Eagle did say that. Very much so
attachment.php

Pretty clear there, no?

Myth 10:29 SO: Millions of passengers want to use Teeside Airport station but the poor rail service is stopping them and not having a proper service has caused passengers at the airport to fall sharply.

Not very clear at all- that thread was talking about the doors on the jubilee line, not about doors elsewhere in the world. The ones on the jubilee line were not installed for suicide prevention.

I was specifically talking about the JLE doors, which had been mentioned previously.

It's fairly obvious that the main reason for those is aerodynamics, otherwise why weren't there any installed at Canning Town or West Ham (surface stations)? Same goes for the ones in the Crossrail core.

Actually, you're all wrong and misinformed about this very important matter. They were installed to hinder the millenium bug from emerging from the sewers.

You were responding to the idea that platform screen doors could be fitted to to "mainline" platforms to prevent suicides (which is impractical mainly because of door positions, though some of the examples shown suggest this can be overcome)
