Further news on the proposed redevelopment:
http://www.manchesterconfidential.c...r-Mayfield-Depot-Manchester-Warehouse-Project

The Mayfield Depot Partnership plans to create a temporary three to five year cultural centre in the depot (currently owned by London and Continental Railways), a 120,000 sq. ft. events space holding a maximum capacity of 7500 and hosting a number of events, from musical events to art exhibitions, sport screenings to conferences, as Mr Drape points out, “The potential there is huge. It’s a massive space slap bang next to Piccadilly. The maximum capacity will be 7500, but to be honest you could easily double that. The only restrictions being the amount of fire exits we can put in.

"We see the Mayfield Depot as filling a gap. Between the capacity of places such as the Apollo (3500) and the Arena (23,000). A space that offers a great many number of possibilities and varying types of events. This isn't a venue that we want to see pigeonholed.

“The Manchester International Festival demonstrated what could be done with the space. Why should that be restricted to once a year?”

David Norris believes the plans will bring investment to the area, “We are taking our inspiration from the Old Truman Brewery, London; Park Avenue Armory, New York and the Gasometer in Oberhausen, Germany – all these large buildings have been reimagined into successful and significant cultural icons in their own rights, and have led to major investment in their local areas.

“Mayfield Depot could be added to that list. The sheer size and scale of the building means we can look to attract projects that will have a significant regional, national or international reputation.

“The Depot could be used to host lots of creative and innovative events around six key areas: arts, food, film, fashion and retail, sport and music. We want to work in collaboration with local, national and international organisations that will embrace Mayfield and rise to the challenge of the building.

“It is still early days for us," continues Norris. "Our application for a premises licence is in and we intend to submit a planning application by the end of October. Subject to planning, the first events could be held in summer 2014 at the Depot."

It is still not the best of areas at present to site an important new venue. I suppose there will be those who say that the rail transport links are excellent, but what percentage of visitors are expected to use this mode of transport. When the two new through platforms 15 and 16 are built at Manchester Piccadilly railway station, the railway will be even nearer to the Mayfield site. Will this pose any acoustic problems for events at the venue?

The current Warehouse Project events, which start around 10pm and finish in the early morning, draw a predominantly younger crowd, including many from outside Manchester who are likely to use the train because it's cheaper than driving and also allows a morning getaway if 'worse for wear'. It's not uncommon to see punters going straight from a late club night to Piccadilly for the first trains on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
As for acoustics, there are already several music venues located in arches under working railway lines - in London around Vauxhall, London Bridge and Hackney, and in Manchester (the original Warehouse Project on Store St, Gorilla on Whitworth St West and there may be others). In my experience, the music in such venues is so loud that you can't hear trains passing overhead.

Now you say this, would any loud music played at night be to the detriment of those hotel visitors in the bedrooms of the Macdonald Hotel that is very near to the Mayfield site, as many of the bedrooms are on the side elevation of the hotel that faces Mayfield. I suppose that the hotel will have aleady been notified of this stated proposal for the event usage at Mayfield.

Okay, third letter through the door now. My entire road, near the site has now been sent... 1. the council planning application 2. a letter from the company wanting to use it and now 3. a letter about it's involvement in HS2.

Initially there was no consultation of the locals, until the ombudsman, press and politicians tipped the council planning chiefs office upside down for not consulting the site's neighbours. A local outcry has taken place with a hidden report being revealed that the "Warehouse Project" nightclub (a noisy huge club with numerous drug-related deaths and incidents) is considering hiring the site.

Should be transport or similar public utility usage, nothing else.

For those not familiar, the Warehouse Project was located underneath Piccadilly station from 2006 to 2011 before it moved to Trafford Park in 2012.

Is Manchester Mayfield station unique (until it's demolished, that is) as an abandoned but still intact station in terms of its size? I can't think of any similarly-sized closed stations elsewhere - but I'm sure I'm about to be corrected!
Waterloo International?

Personally I think the HS2 station should be built in a big trench on the Mayfield site (with tunnel portals at both ends, I've never been to Stratford International on HS1 but I believe it's the same idea), with additional platforms for Piccadilly built above using Mayfield's approach viaduct.

Come on Paul, you must have seen all the publicity on this? May I suggest you google with 'Waterloo re-use of international platforms'.

Unfortunately "Waterloo (Merseyside)" is more local to me at the present time with regard to news stories..

I think the only "big trench" in respect of HS2 at present is the one the those against the project wish to consign the idea...then to mentally fill it in.

One example which I'm quite familiar with is the Cockpit (formerly the Rocket) in Leeds- just down the uncovered steps from the bus/taxi road of the station (by the seldom-used P7). I've never noticed the noise of trains overhead when in there, though artists have supposedly complained about noise during soundchecks. I don't ever recall being on the station while gigs are on so can't comment on the impact in that direction.

Have you seen the plans for Piccadilly and the surrounding area? It totally transforms it and having a big ditch cut in would spoil it, the proposed HS2 terminal IMO fits in well with the existing train shed much better than in early images.

Well you could just put an arched trainshed over the trench :D

Then have walkways at "ground level" with the concourse and the platforms underneath.

I am somewhat confused by the discussion of a second HS2 station site in the area of Mayfield station, as the latest plans with drawings were the establishment of this new station on the other side of Manchester Piccadilly railway station on the Store Street elevation which would see trains coming out of the long tunnel in an area not too far removed from Longsight depot and running on that side of the running lines.

How on earth is it then proposed to run this trackwork onto the other side of Manchester Piccadilly station in the region of the former Mayfield railway station ?

To follow on from this posting that I made, I have had a long telephone conversation with two members of the management of this hotel. The outcome of these discussions appear to show that the hotel would indeed be worried about loud music at late night venue events held in the former Mayfield railway station that could have adverse audible repercussions upon their residents with bedrooms on the hotel elevation that faces the Mayfield site. They assured me that the solicitors acting for the hotel would take all necessary legal measures to ensure that the hotel was protected.

It wouldn't be a second HS2 station, it is just that I think the Mayfield site would be better than the current plans. Instead of emerging from the tunnel near Longsight I would propose keeping the route in tunnel and running to a beneath-ground-level (but not in tunnel) station on the Mayfield site, with additional classic line platforms constructed above.

Simple, shift the tunnel portal so you emerge pretty much onto the platforms.

HS2 trains are up to 400m long and the Mayfield trainshed is only half that, so a station at this site would either be partly underground or involve demolition of other buildings to lengthen it. It would be easier, if a sub-surface station was required, to build one on the site to the north proposed for the elevated terminus.

Is there anything at all planned, anywhere on the Railway, that you actually agree with?
If by 'the Railway' you mean HS2 then not really. The main thing I support about HS2 is the general concept that we need more rail capacity and new lines are probably the best way of providing that. Most of the details surrounding HS2 stations I do not agree with.
