I agree there doesn't seem to be much around - I've just had a quick look through my books covering the Manchester area, and couldn't find even so much as a mention of Mayfield except on the maps. Seems a bit odd when the end of the platforms must have been a fantastic viewpoint to see all that was going on across London Road station throat.
I don't think it was ever used all that much though. It doesn't ever seem to have been a busy station, with no more than a handful of daily services to local destinations that would have been largely unremarkable to a photographer - all the sexy stuff was going on across the road! The 1947 timetable shows only four trains a day during the week but rather busier on Saturdays with some 'exotic' services to holiday destinations. It was closed altogether though on Sundays.
The few photographs you do come across tend to look like a scene from
The Third Man though!
In fact, there seems to have been more photographs taken since it closed if what you find on-line is any indication.
