Myth 47829: The 'Police' liveried Class 47 is owned by Sting and is a marketing gimmick to advertise the reforming of the band 'The Police'

...therefore the band reunion must be cancelled, because he sold the loco for scrap?

Myth P=NP: Hanging around the "Disputes and Prosecutions" thread will not lead to you nervously looking around for signage about having to buy a ticket the next time you make one of your occasional trips by train.

Myth please buy on the train: When boarding at an Unstaffed station it is very important to board at the front of the train especially in busy times so the conductor has a better chance of reaching you.

Myth MS61 : One black and white CRT screen per platform is more than sufficient for providing information at a station just outside Paris on a line used by over a million people a day. Even better to have the tiny flashing light to indicate short formed trains only visible on part of the platform, the bit where said trains stop anyway, because it saves so much time getting everyone to run up the platform for short trains as they were not pre-warned.

Myth Ligne 14 : Just like the media would have us believe, everything is far better abroad. For example, the Parisian metro is a fantastically clean system, with sparkling stations, a high staff presence, no issues with beggars at all, very few strike or other disturbances, passengers who feel safe at all time, and a system where ticket less travel is as rare as hen's teeth. It really is a glowing example to follow, and far superior to other underground systems in every way, especially that of London.

Myth: any stock that is not in service has the power of teleportation, so that it can be used to strengthen other services at a moment's notice and then return to the depot it was at so it's not out of place.

At the risk of repeating a few (Like 'eck am I reading close to 800 posts before typing my own!  ) here's a bunch of myths that I hear all too often...
  • South West Trains' fares offer good value for money.
  • East Midlands Trains' fares offer good value for money.
  • The 49% Stagecoach ownership of Virgin Trains is a bad thing.
  • The small windows on Pendolinos were chosen to make the train "feel more like a Virgin Plane", and are absolutely nothing to do with improving the trains safety in the event of a crash.
  • LM are crap.
  • Desiros are only capable of 100mph and will never exceed this figure.
  • Javelins are limited to 140mph only because Eurostar wanted higher speeds to be their exclusive.
  • 450s are not capable of receiving the upgrades that the 350s got a while ago.
  • Home counties TOCs do not operate north of London.
  • You cannot use a Virgin Trains service if you have ever had sex.
  • Third rail is better than overhead wires.
  • The Transrapid is not at all safe for passenger operations (Its system designers, OTOH...)
  • Upgrading the WCML with TVM-430 and reintroducing Class 370/0s at 160mph will not work out to be a much quicker and more cost-effective alternative to HS2.
  • Your child ticket is perfectly valid for your morning commute even when the gateline staff have seen you drive into the station and park up a few minutes before... :ThatllBeAnMG11then:

Sorry, that 5th one isn't a myth!
In that case, I must be the only person in the World who has received consistently good and enjoyable service from LM! <D

neither are 4 or 6.
4. All other Pendos (Finnish, Czech and Italian) also have the same narrow windows to my knowledge and recollection. From my perspective, this appears to be intended to give the train more "armour" to shield passengers in the event of a high-speed derailment.

6. LM disprove that completely - A lot of their 350s have been modified for 110mph, and run at that speed very nicely indeed! <D

Thats because at (without telling LM) so all the passengers see is VWC being organised and LM being unable to cope, ergo LM are the problem!

Other high speed trains can manage to have decent sized windows so why not the bendydildoes?

The 3rd rail is the limiting thing on that rather than the trains themselves.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
That should read-

At the first sign of disruption Beardies bunch drop all thei problem passengers onto LM (without telling LM of course)

Myth No. Frank Hornby

Traders at toy and model railway shows have a great sense of humour and are a barrel of laughs.

3rd rail?
How does this have any effect?

Edit: never knew they had a contact shoe! Surely this only has a limited effect in 3rd rail areas.

100 mph is the fastest that any electric trains can travel over third rail, because any faster and the shoe gear starts to damage the conductor rails.

How does this have any effect?

Because of the amount of power the train would need to draw to get to the higher speed, 3rd rail power is much more limited simply because it is at a much lower voltage (so you need more current) than that nasty/horrible overhead stuff.

The higher the voltage you have the lower the current you need-

Volts x amps= power

So if you lower one of them you have to increase the other to compensate so at 750V you would need 33x the current that you would need at 25,000V and that simply is not realistic.

I am not going into the AC verses DC stuff either! ;)

Use of the phrase "Poor Customer Service" in any complaint gets you triple rail vouchers. (Reduced to double if it is found your view of poor customer service is a servant of the railway implementing a regulations/byelaw)

Capital letter help too - if you write your entire complaint letter in capitals and remember to underline every second word then you are bound to get hundreds of pounds of vouchers following the delay to your five minute journey

With that mentality, I wonder how you'd prove "VIRGIN ONLY" validity...

Don't take the kids  .

Myth 754a: Moderating any Internet forum is always a thankful task, and nobody ever gives you a hard time as a moderator. Everyone acknowledges that you willingly and freely contribute your time and energies to supporting and maintaining their community. As such, no member would ever have a grievance against a forum staff member.

(Yeah, I'm a forum mod somewhere, too...;))

I have to agree, I moderate an ETS2 forum and I get stacks of PM's from members, requesting this and that and they sometimes get annoyed when I have to tell them that it will have to wait. ( I have a life you know)

Mythtaken identity... People travelling later in the day don't want to find any copies of Metro left on their train, so it is important for train staff to ensure they are all bin-bagged at the earliest opportunity.

While I'd completely agree that not all newspapers should be binned before the end of the day:

Mythtaken identity b... binning a single newspaper is unacceptable as second-hand newspapers are in huge demand throughout the day. At least five per seat are needed.

Myth related to the above: The Metro is popular because it has the highest level of quality reporting, is unbiased, does not pander to a particular audience and is superior to all other newspapers. The fact it is free is irrelevant.

Myth selfish bar steward

The TOC should not care if a person has been hit by a train. I need to get home. (Sadly seen on twitter every single day)

And according to FCCs twitter today after the mill hill incident, TOCs should have platform doors like the jubilee line has as this would prevent all suicides. The only reason that they don't is because they would prefer to line their pockets with the money. Nothing to do with stations not being owned by the TOC or the fact that platform doors are completely impractical and unworkable on the mainline for numerous reasons and the fact that people could still jump infront of trains using other means.
