I've had iOS7 throughout the beta stages, and I think it's the best thing to hit iPhone software in a long time.

Will be interesting to see the public reaction to the new look. My first impression was that iOS7 looked very much like an Android overlay. There is one that looks very similar (Huawei, I think). This is not a bad thing, of course, but if your device doesn't look like an Apple any more, how will people be able to identify you as an Apple user? (*)

Having said that, I expect the iPhone 5S will still sell by the bucket load. Not sure about the 5C - looks cheap and crappy like a Nokia, and identifies you as a cheapskate for those who do recognise it as an iPhone. (*)

(*) Smartphone are partially fashion items. For many users, choosing such a product is (consciously or not) a part of their self-identity and therefore really about the perceived impression it will create in others.

It wasn't meant to be taken too seriously and my opinion isn't based solely on the outcome of that survey but a number of other factors, including internal chats with colleagues via Skype, plus feedback from game developers that has been given for another feature we're working on.

Two French networks have already come out, possibly getting into trouble with Apple in due course, saying that pre-orders for the 5c have been terrible. One said it was the worst Apple launch ever.

In the UK, all the operators were only allowed to promote the 5c on the home page and take pre-orders for that, which has had at least one moaning that most people were contacting them to say they wanted the 5s and why couldn't they order in advance?

Now, you might argue that the 5c is aimed at an audience that wouldn't pre-order anything anyway (but if so, why put this all over the network sites and the Apple website?). People will just see the phone in due course when going into a phone store, or the Apple store, and go 'that's nice' and buy one.

The problem is, the 5c isn't a cheap phone. And it looks cheap, which goes against the brand that Apple tries to protect and portray. You'll come over as the person who couldn't afford the 5s to your peers. You won't be seeing any in and around Shoreditch/Silicon roundabout anytime soon!

Don't get me wrong, the 5c looks like a sound device. A colleague got one and is reviewing it for our site at the moment, and I fully expect the outcome to be positive - but I just have a feeling it won't be selling in the numbers that Apple hoped until the price comes down.. and that puts Apple in a position it doesn't want to be in - a provider of a 'cheap' product.

Apple now has a small marketshare, but enjoys something every other manufacturer would kill for - amazing profit margins. And Apple isn't going to give that up in a hurry!

Given the increased profit margin on the 5C I'm sure they're laughing all the way to the bank. Meanwhile at Foxconn in China, people are killing themselves due to appauling working hours and poor wages.

Truly a great company . Their bubble is slowly bursting and I personally am glad.

Foxconn make many companies' products, not just Apple's. But hey, let's not let the situation get clouded by facts.

They turn out to be default bookmarks in the 'favourites' list which are displayed when a new tab is opened. They can be deleted.

Overall impression so far - good that the vile skeuomorphism is gone, and a few nice features such as the control centre are added (albeit long after the competition). I don't really like the new look though and the browser, which is the most important feature for me, looks awful - far too bright. Few long standing deficiencies are addressed, so still no widget/live tile equivalent, still only very limited sharing of data between apps, etc. It's also slow, jerky and prone to short freezes on the ipad 3. Altogether, 5/10.

I haven't got any additional bookmarks at all. Exactly the same as what i had before.

These 'promotional' bookmarks only appear when starting with a 'fresh' bookmark database. Same thing as happens on desktop Safari.

Another new feature

iOS7-waterproofs-your-phone.jpg

Oh wait Apple fans tried dunking their phones to test this new feature and now have a £500 paperweight

(Image is a spoof claiming that IOS7 adds waterproofing)

Wow, people have actually tried that?! These spoofs are getting better and better O_Q

(Haha, covered by Apple warranty... Though I do recall some rumour about the first feature there?)

My phone has a great waterproofing feature.

Namely, if anyone gets any liquid anywhere near it, I will punch them. :P

I'll take care then, rather a clumsy guy I am!

Let's not let the unpaid over-time their employees are forced to do to meet the demand for the iPhone.

It's been well documented and Apple couldn't care less.

Neither could consumers it appears. 9 million sold since launch last friday. Thats a lot of handsets.

Me mate showed me the iOS7 last night on his iPhone 4 and its like some cheap linux OS to me. The keyboard is pathetic as is the whole layout.

Or Sony, or Nintendo... but it's easier just to bash Apple.

Don't get me wrong - whatever Apple sold last weekend is going to be impressive and have the rivals jealous, but;

http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/24/4...s-did-apple-sell-analysts-dispute-the-numbers

(I've long been suspicious of its numbers, just as I am about the releases from Samsung that now copy the Apple method - namely announcing a 'record breaking' success following the launch of any new product).

I've spoken to a few people - in retail stores and via others online - and the difference here is that Apple hasn't sold out in all the shops. Yes, it drip fed its own stores to turn people away (always works as people go crazy) but you can walk into just about any phone retailer and get one - certainly the 5c with no trouble whatsoever.

The exact same was true with the iPad 3 and the iPad mini. Yes, people queued up at Apple stores to get one - but walk into a PC World or Currys and you could buy as many as you wanted on the very same day (in fact, in the case of PC World which opened at midnight, about 8 hours before you could get one in the Apple store).

Apparently the "auto-upload-to-Facebook" function gets set to “on” after upgrading to iOS 7 on iPhones.

As the Tory "member" for Hillingdon and Ealing discovered when he took a "selfie"

There must be a "flash setting" joke there somewhere. If wonder if he will resign, or continue to "stick it out" :)

I've got it on my iPad. Hated it at first but now it's not too bad.

I heard a lot of people had a few issues with their phones crashing. Luckily mine didn't.

I've ditched my iPhone for a Samsung Galaxy S4 anyway.

iOS 7 has been testing my patience today.

It's crashed no fewer than 11 times in the past 15 minutes while I was trying to have a look through the TSGN and Essex Thameside ITTs <(

If it continues I'll probably restore my iPad back to last week when I didn't have it, bit if a joke really when you consider I could look through comparable things with no issue what so ever!

Restoring won't do anything. Once you've upgraded iOS there is no going back.....at least not unless you're jailbroken.

I haven't had any issues here, on my iPad 2 and iPhone 4.

iOS 7 had a number of issues during beta testing (colleagues installed it on the first day they could) and it seems many issues haven't been fixed yet.

But even when Steve Jobs was still with us, I found that more recent versions of OS X had countless serious bugs left unfixed for months. One of the biggest was to do with Wi-Fi on newer iMac and MacBook products, but it never really got exposed because Apple is very clever in not acknowledging problems until they've got a fix.

So, after almost a year of problems, you get an OSX update with a small comment like 'Fixes a Wi-Fi issue that might affect a small number of users' and - bingo - it's fixed, at last!

From Apple's point of view, this approach to customer service is perfect!

They did apparently fix a bug in the payment system very very quickly, but then user payments to apple are the most important!

Given there's one developer making about $1m a day on in app purchases, it will be interesting to see how Apple (and Google, Microsoft etc) will deal with the fact that, at last, this is being looked at seriously by governments around the world.

Interesting because Apple gets 30% of what the developer/publisher sells within the app, so is making an outrageous amount of 'free' money - yet has to still be seen to be wanting to make sure people aren't taken advantage of.

While it hasn't happened yet, many people see in app purchasing to speed up a game, or get you more weapons (or whatever) as triggering the same emotions as when gambling.

As ever the authorities are far too slow to adapt to the 'scam' of the moment (not saying the concept of in app purchasing is a scam, but most games are now built purely to find ways to sell you things) - we had them slow to deal with those late-night TV 'quiz' shows even though everyone knew they were a con.

Anyway, I've deviated somewhat from talking about iOS 7 I think!

haha! For clarification, I meant $1m - and it's by no means unique.

Of course, on the flip side, many publishers are now trying to win big with IAPs but aren't making much - because the other big problem on the App Store and Play stores is that you can't really expect many downloads if you don't show up on lists or 'editorial picks'.

As such, most developers never cover their costs - and you might well see a few going out of business if they rely on mobile to get rich.

I'll start this by saying that I'm not familiar with Andriod - so it's difficult to compare iOS with that platform for me. Having recently played around with a Windows phone, I realised how out-dated the old iOS interface was beginning to look in comparison to other systems. It seems that iOS 7 has given a fresher, more modern look to the Apple devices - something which has been needed for awhile, given I've owned iPhones since the early days with very few changes to the interface made in that time.

I've yet to update my iPad, but iOS 7 seems to be working well on my iPhone 5.

iOS 7 does bring some nice new features that have been shamelessly copied from Android, but I do think some of the look and feel is a bit childish - and not what I expected from Mr Ive.

I expect it will either get toned down in the future, or there will be more options added to customise the look and feel.

I have tried iOS7 on a work iPhone 4 that I had in for redeployment...gave me a chance to have a quick play before I got queries about it!

A few of us have said it looks like a Woolworths toy...but I agree it looks cleaner (I had an iOS6 and iOS7 device side by side on Friday and the differences to the home screen are even plainer to see then)

Took me a quick Google to find out how to use it, but I like the new Task Manager...a lot lot clunky than the previous version, and a lot more logical too...though I have heard this is an Android copy, my Android doesn't have it :P (that I know of anyway!)

With Samsung phones you usually access it by long pressing the home button. YMMV
