Hello, I was just wondering why the Loop Line closures in Liverpool have resulted in Platform 3 being closed and the usually out of use platform 2 being opened along with platform 1. Both platforms are sending train North and South on Wirral so it doesn't look like they are using them as a 'West Kirby/New Brighton' and 'Chester/Ellesmere Port' separation. Also, why would they not use platforms 2 and 3 as they are next to each other? It seems odd to have shut 3 and opened 2 while still using the isolated platform 1.
Is there a reason that a third platform had to be built in the first place? Could a tunnel for the loop(to Moorfields) not be dug from the one already existing as was done with the route up from Central?
